Gunners in Euro 2008
By: travis | June 7th, 2008
With the tournament kicking off today, it’s time to gloss over the list of Arsenal players who are representing their country, looking for glory.
Cesc Fabregas: After a great season – especially early on – Cesc has a real chance to step things up and lead Spain to success. But first he’s got to get playing time, as the midfield depth of the Spanish means it’ll be hard to crack the starting XI.
William Gallas: Gallas should partner with Lillian Thurham as a starting central defender. On another note, Clichy should be in the French side, but aren’t. In ex-Gunner news, Flamini got a call up, and of course Henry is in.
Philippe Senderos: Starter for the hosts (Swiss) in the backline. Has a chance to show Arsene that he’s not just a blunder waiting to happen. Although at times I like him, every time I see him go up against a striker like Drogba or Torres, I get nervous.
Lukasz Fabianski: Backup keeper for the Polish team, but probably won’t make an appearance as Celtic keeper Artur Boruc is the number one.
Johan Djourou: More of a reserve player here, he may start alongside Senderos on the back line, although he wants to play more of a midfielder role for Arsenal. Good luck to him.
Robin Van Persie: The Dutch striker is a question mark for the tournament. As usual, his fitness is the problem, as he can’t seem to get fit.
Wenger will have his eye on a few players, and suggests that Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, and Mario Gomez to do well. He also mentions that he’ll have his eyes open on some new players, although admitting that it’s hard to find the unknown player at a tournament like that one.
