Champions League Draw: Arsenal vs. AC Milan

By: Dan | December 21st, 2007

100px-ac_milan.pngWhoa. Arsenal is facing AC Milan in the next round, with the first leg at the Emirates on February 20th and the second leg at the San Siro on March 4th. An unbelievable draw (though I guessed it), and a tantalizing prospect for neutrals. This game will be simply massive. AC Milan has the world’s best player Kaka, along with Pirlo, Gattuso, Inzaghi, Maldini and other world-class players. It will be a battle between young and old, and there will be ridiculous contests between midfields. Both teams have outstanding midfield play, and the possibilities are simply ludicrous. Fabregas and Flamini will be facing Kaka, Pirlo and Gattuso. Experience vs. exuberance.

But I think we can certainly match AC Milan. Their team is indisputably aging (with the exception of Kaka and Pato) and they seem to be slipping in the league (13th at the moment). They have yet to win at the San Siro this season (a reassuring sign for our trip to Italy), and have seemingly fallen apart since their Champions League win. Arsenal is able to shift to a higher gear whenever they play the best teams, and a draw like this brings back warm memories of the Champions League run of 05-06 when we beat Real Madrid. I would have preferred to have the second leg at home (where we can overturn any possible deficit), but I am cautiously optimistic. The prospect of the game is alternately terrifying and captivating, and certainly gives the opportunity for our young squad to prove itself.

Carlo Ancelotti dismissed us last month, but after drawing us, we have become the “most difficult draw” possible. Wenger is optimistic, which is fantastic. If he approaches the game correctly (with a 4-4-2), we could have an open, fast-paced game which would be to our advantage. Edelman looks forward to the game as well

“We would probably have preferred an easier one at this stage but this is a great match, everyone will look forward to it tremendously. Arsene has built a great squad and we are confident. We’re playing good football. We’re doing well off the pitch as well as on it and we’re looking forward to a very exciting end to the season.”

February seems so far away…

It is ridiculous to imagine that Milan will just sit back and let those mediocre boys juggle around the field. Rememmber Milan have Ambrosini, Seedorf, Pirlo and Gatuso in the midfield. This is not just any other midfield. In the defence, the Rossoneri have the choice of Cafu (a tantalising overlapper), Maldini, Marek, Kaladze, Digao(a youngster), Matteo (another youngster)Bonera (an Upcoming and zealous defender), Oddo and Dario Simic (he was in the squad that denied England passage the Euro 2008. When it comes to the attack Kaka and Pato will tear apart the whole arsenal midfield and God help them if Sanderos will be on the pitch.
    Arsenal are in trouble

Its going to be interesting. Logically, on paper, obviously it would be Milan who are the faves. Look at their pedigree in this competition compared to arsenal which is virtually non-existent. However, arsenal are on a good run at the mo and AC milan will have to be at their very best to defeat them over two legs. For all the talk of age, its funny that it will be Milan who field the youngest player for this tie, a certain PATO…

i think arsenal have a glory chance to beat milan but it will hard, every player must play their heart out, but it is age vs youth, arsenal have a good young sqaud that can beat milan but however milan wont sit back they will break arsenal’s play and so will arsenal vise versa. Milan will score on set peice, becoz pirlo the big danger. arsenal must be sharp and clear the ball in the air. arsena will score on a coutr attack, the likes of fabregas, adebayor, hleb , eduardo making the play and dont forget van persie. arsnenal will have to keep their defence tight must hava gallas and toure at their best and we must score early at emirates. kaka and pato is arsenal’s man marked players. we have the pace but they have the experiecne at this level. gattuso is the danger of breaking arsenal’s attack however ARSENAL 4EVAAAAAAAA

    Hello fans,
This is Wanga from Kenya. I read with dismay the way milan are dismisses as a bunch of oldies. as usual that’s what Man U apologists used before they were taught a real lesson in football. I am waiting to see the fabled midfield of Fabregas, Hleb and Flamini stranded, while Ambrosini, Gattuso and Seedorf do the passing and then leave it to Kaka and Pato to finish off the kill. Milan have pedigree and flavour unmatched in Europe the last two seasons. Arsenal will never know what hit them, though I a dmit it will be an interesting match especially at the Emirates. But when it comes to the San Siro you can imagine the roar of 80,000 plus fans. I wonder how the young lads will handle that with the work horse in Ambrosini, Gattuso and Pirlo running around them. Fooooorzaaaaaa Rosonneri! Milan for ever.
