We lost balls where you cannot afford to lose balls

Is that headline real immature? Ok, it’s not as funny as this one, but humor me for a moment. It reads from Arsene Wenger’s post game press conference.

Let me apologize for the lack of posting here – my computer died leaving in a void for a few days, and now it doesn’t want to connect wirelessly. I don’t know if that’s a good excuse or not, it’s just strange having to plug it in again. Anyone straight to the match.

That was certainly a poor showing, to put it one way. Shocking defending, poor movement up front, and a final score that I think flattered us a bit. Then again, when you look at the squad Arsene trotted out there, you can’t help but sort of expect a result such as this one. Porto looked like the club that wanted it more – pardon the cliche – for the majority of the match.

The result is hardly the end of the world, and while it might have been interesting to see what could have happened with a stronger side, the concern once again must shift to the backline. Gallas, Silvestre, Djourou, and Eboue weren’t very convincing, at least in my opinion. They looked a bit sloppy and careless. Again, it’s a side missing Clichy and Sagna, so I guess too much judgment can’t be passed.

That’s a wrap for the group stage, and all eyes will be tuned in on December 19 for the draw. Our next opponent will be chosen from AS Roma, Panathanaikos, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, or Juventus. Not really a weak list right there. Each one would provide it’s own challenge, and you’d have to admit the weakest team (first impression only) would be Panathanaikos. Not to say that the rest aren’t unbeatable – except perhaps Barcelona. Needless to say, the one thing that sums up Arsenal thus far in 2008/09, is that that are consistently inconsistent.
