International Round-up

By: Trent | November 15th, 2006

Several international matches today, many featuring–or even NOT featuring–various Arsenal players. First up, Dandy Thierry Henry’s World Cup-runner-up side defeated Greece 1-0 at the Stade de France. The lone scorer: you guessed it, Henry. The Gunner legend needs but two more goals for Les Bleus to equal Michel Platini’s all-time record.

Brazil continued its unbeaten streak under new manager Dunga by defeating Switzerland 2-1 in a Basel friendly. Arsenal man Gilberto Silva had to withdraw for Brazil due to injury, but that made way for Arsenal young gun Denilson. For the hosts, Philippe Senderos and Johann Djourou got a chance to play.

Sweden were of course without the injured Freddie “Golden Ball” Ljungberg in their friendly 0-1 loss to the Drogba-powered Ivory Coast. Good lord, when did Didier Drogba become the world’s best striker? At any rate, Kolo Toure played in the back for the Ivorians.

The sore-throated Jens Lehmann missed out on Germany’s comanding 1-1 draw with mighty Cyprus.

Finally: As I write this, Cesc Fabregas’s Spanish side is losing 0-1 to Romania, in Spain. Update: That’s a final.
