Memes and Finalities

By: Abby | April 13th, 2008

Well, that’s it, then.

I’m not really in a mood to due a true post-mortem. There will be plenty of days and weeks for that. But I have a few immediate reactions before I go attempt to be cheery for several many hours.

The meme of Arsenal is that we need experience- yet it was the two most experienced of our outfield players that let us down today. Gallas with an absolutely pointless penalty giveaway, Gilberto with the free kick. Not that it’ll change in the way both friends, foes, and supposed neutrals write about us. Football commentary does not bend to reason very often. It is about what is felt, not what is. Impressions of things.

Eduardo’s loss is more than just the shock it made the team feel- it was also that we lost a truly great finisher who was coming to terms with the league. He was in great form before Birmingham and who’s to say he couldn’t have made an actual difference? Anyone remember that bizarre game against Everton where we somehow won 4-1?

Also, today Jens Lehmann showed why, despite his and everyone else’s best efforts to dissuade me from it, I’m still his fan(girl). He is an exciting goalkeeper with a flair for the spectacular, with these lovely little saves just from flicks of his feet. He and Gilberto make an interesting comparison- Lehmann shoots his mouth off, looks embarrassing, cranky, sets himself up to ridicule, and yet when he comes in he’s still trying as hard as he ever did, he’s still mostly sharp. It’s why he hasn’t really lost his place for Germany- he can come in at a moment and perform. Gilberto, on the other hand, has been mostly a model professional in public, just occasionally admitting to frustration and saying that maybe, he could leave. Yet when he comes in there’s no sign that he’s bothered anymore. I still wish Lehmann had gone to Dortmund when he had the chance, as a fan of his. (I would have been over the moon had he gone to my Hertha, whose interest I’ve always dismissed as pure fantasy but wa actually quite serious.) But there’s a long-term strain of self-destruction in Jens Lehmann. It would have to end this way.

Oh well. So it goes, sometimes, despite our best efforts.

We played gorgeous football, at least. If we’re gonna go out at all, at least it was in style.

I have nothing against Lehmann on the pitch, but off the pitch, he is a straight-up jerk.

    Gallas was an idiot today.

    Fabregas was awesome.

I don’t really know what it was that *didn’t* click for Arsenal, though. Man U just didn’t deserve the win at all. At. All.

Gael Clichy showed exactly why we don’t miss Cashley one little bit.

He was still sprinting around in the 90th minute and looked good in defence and attack. BRILLIANT!!!

Cesc was as ‘Catherine-Lucia’ say’s ‘awesome’!

He has looked tired at the end of games recently but the way he digs so deep and you can see it’s hurting him to run but he puts everything in for the shirt.

I think you are wrong about Gilberto. Today he played brilliantly and restored my faith in him. I concede that recently he looks sluggish, but he made up for it today with a great performance, he didn’t give an inch to Ronaldo.

It could have been that because he’s come on late in games, he’s struggled to adapt to the pace of the game and therefore looked out-of-depth, but today he showed his quality.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m heartbroken.

But it’s the same old story; take the lead and show a complete lack of maturity then concede moments later.

We’ve done it against Birmingham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manpoo to name just a few.

We need to realise that after taking the lead we need to tighten the game up for 15-20 mins. But we never do.

On a brighter note, I am very very proud of the whole squad.

No-one gave us a chance this year after Titi left. But we respnded brilliantly and no-one predicted we’d do this well.

And to be honest if we hadn’t had such bad luck with injuries to RVP, Rosicky, Eduardo, Sagna, Cesc, Hleb, Flamini, Ade. All these players were out for significant amount of time with injuries, especially RVP and Rosicky.

Plus the African Cup of Nations seemed to tire out Toure, and Eboue was playing well when he left for Ghana.

Add to this some ridiculous referee decisions (e.g. Pen at Birmingham, Pen at Anfield, NO PEN FOR HLEB!!! to name just a few).

So after weighing up these things; you begin to realise that all in all it was a decent season, but that’s not much consolation for the pain we’re all feeling.

I am confident however that if Arsene adds a few players to the squad then we can have a fantastic chance of winning the league next year.

    Players I’d like are:

    Niko Krancjar-Portsmouth
    Zarate- On loan at Brum
    Joe Hart- Man City
    Vederen Corluka- Man City.

And perhaps a central midfielder (defensive).

I think we could get all them players and a good CM for less than £50million. And they say Arsene has £60 million if necessary.

Plus all these players are young thus fitting Arsenes criteria.

WE LOVE U ARSENAL WE DO, WE LOVE YOU ARSENAL WE DO, WE LOVE YOU ARSENAL WE DO….. OH ARSENAL WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!
And I think all these players are within our price.

I just hope they don’t kill themselves in the Euros and then come back to Arsenal rather useless for the rest of the season and then use it as an excuse.

Arsenal need to recapture wing play like when Pires and Ljungberg were at their finest. They have become one dimensional in where they can stretch a defense, and that’s in the middle. Adebayor is nowhere as dynamic a player as Titi, and he doesn’t have the ability to take defenders on like Henry. If they could get Hleb and Walcott to lock down the wings on the attack, they would open up more space for Ade up top. However, this summer, Arsene needs to pick up a dynamic winger and maybe a holding forward if Eduardo can’t comeback 100 percent.
