Chelsea v. Arsenal: The Goals

By: Trent | December 11th, 2006

After the jump, check out the goals from yesterday’s 1-1 draw at the Bridge.

First up is Flamini’s strike, which was the result of some nice spacing and passing. Second is Essien’s answer, which was the result of an absolute cracker of a strike.

Great game! Arsenal showed up! I was hoping for a draw at most - for awhile there, after Flamini’s strike, I was on tenterhooks wondering is we could actually win this thing. But it was not to be. Still, for such an inconsistent, troubled side this season to go to Stamford Bridge and come away with a draw is no mean feat. Gilberto was excellent as captain throughout. All the boys worked damned hard, including Adebayor, who gets so much stick. Give Essien his due, brilliant strike. Tho I can’t understand why it’s being called “the goal of the season” when there have been several other equally or even better goals this season. My own nomination for that title would be from Liverpool’s Alonso and his breathtaking strike from his own half.

I’m with Sandra. The Essien goal was a nice, pretty kick, but the Arsenal goal… Wow. With every pass, Arsenal is a split second from losing the ball, yet they somehow find the open spot every time and hold on. And the guys from Chelsea are in position, doing their jobs, yet Flamini somehow finds the hole. Beautiful teamwork, beautiful soccer! (Where has this team been all year? Seriously, do you think Henry has been holding them back?)

Laurie, I don’t think Henry has been holding the team back. I think Henry is getting the much-needed rest following lots of Arsenal football & France WC action. If anything, TH14’s rest is allowing players to step up to the plate and work hard at trying to get into 1st team. Its a young team and I’m really proud of them…I also miss TH14! Can’t wait for him to come back well rested and full of desire to win!
