Everton tomorrow, Henry statue and 33 passes

By: Brenton | December 9th, 2011

I’m going to make this quick, because it’s too late to garner much attention anyway.

Tomorrow we face Everton at the Emirates. I feel like I could just copy this preview from any game they’ve played over the past few seasons: They’re a pretty good team, but they are struggling to score goals because they don’t really have a good striker.

We’re in 5th, trying to leap over Chelsea, who are playing City on Monday. We don’t have a starting fullback after Santos’ unfortunate injury midweek, so we’ll play with four starting CBs. Awesome. The biggest question is who plays at right back, Koscielny or Djourou. My money’s on Djourou, as Wenger will want a solid centre back pairing. Here’s my best guess for the starting 11:

At least that's what I would do with the backline

At least that's what I would do with the backline

And so on. I’m not that interested in this preview, as you may be able to tell. We should win. Kick-off is 3pm UK, noon Eastern, 7am Pacific. See you on the liveblog.

I am, however, very interested in this:

The club unveiled three new statues yesterday, of club legends Herbert Chapman, Tony Adams and Thierry Henry. Here is Henry speaking at the unveiling.

Yah, that’s class. What a memorable pose.

And finally, for those that missed it, here is video of Gervinho’s goal against Wigan. If you didn’t know, that goal came after 33 consecutive passes, the most in the Premier League this season and 10 more than any other team. Beautiful passing football indeed.

Cheers, and see you all tomorrow bright and early.

  • Any reason to why Tony Adams wasn't present? If I remember correctly, he didn't attend the last game at Highbury either. Seems a bit odd to me, seeing as how he's a legend at the Arsenal.

  • Yeah, his excuse was that he had a meeting scheduled with the general manager of his Azerbaijani club (from whom he resigned last month) to iron out some contractual issues. I have no doubt he could have rescheduled that and attended the statue unveiling if he had really wanted to.

It is clear that he has some issues with Wenger, or the club, or both, and quite possibly vice versa. But I don't think I've ever heard him speak about it or seen anything reliable about what it might have been about. It's just sad -- not to cast aspersions on him, but just in the literal sense, it is sad, that the club's greatest captain has such a chilly relationship with the club's greatest manager and, currently, the club. I certainly look forward to the day when both sides put that behind them and he becomes a regular fixture at the club where he belongs.

    What happened to Jenkinson?

Nice to see Titi's face, he truly loves the club, his heart never left the Arsenal.

I wonder how Arteta will feel. I mean the guy seems really like he is into Arsenal, but he spent several years there being an icon.

  • He was well-liked at Everton, but hardly an icon. You would read more about David Moyes, Tim Cahill, even Phil Neville, than you would about Arteta.

We are in a full-back crisis.

Indeed we have a great club. Its the authenticity of clubs like Arsenal that makes being a fan worth while. It was great to see TH14 being recognized for this great accomplishment and his service to the club and I hope someday to see RVP treated in a similar manner in the not so distant future. I felt like a tribute to the Invincibles would have been nice as well, but maybe that is in works for the 150th anniversary. I hope we can commemorate our 125th anniversary game with a great win over Everton. I remember in the 2004-2005 we destroyed them 7-0, i'm hoping for a similar result tomorrow. Gunner for life.
