Why Henry and We Needed a Rest

By: Trent | November 19th, 2006

thierryhenryblowap.jpgWe here at the Arsenal Offside understand how grueling the Premiership / International / Champions League / FA Cup/ Carling Cup / Being Fabulously Wealthy grind can be. Sometimes it’s all we can do to sit down and type out four or five forgettable sentences before we need a beer and a nap. So you can imagine that bon vivants of the international football stage such as Thierry Henry may need a break now and then.

That’s why Arsenal gaffer Arsene Wenger kept Henry out of the first half of the Gunners’ 1-1 home draw with Newcastle on Saturday. Of course, it was Henry who came on after the interval to save Arsenal’s bacon with an incredible free-kick goal.

For his part, A-Dub was (as usual) pissed at France coach Raymond Domenech, who insisted on playing Henry for 90 minutes against Greece midweek. This is a return to the old tensions between club and country. Could Henry’s presence in the first half have secured three points for Arsenal? We’ll never know.

Now. About that beer and nap.

I can’t blame Wenger for being furious at Domenech. It was a friendly! And it’s not as if Henry is a new player who needs practice with the national squad.

In Domenech’s defense, France was hit with a lot of late injuries after he named the team. I think he would have been happy to put Anelka and Benzema in for Saha and Henry, but Benzema’s out with an injury. (As were Govou and Ribery.) Trezeguet was injured and couldn’t be called up, and Gonzalo Higuain turned France down for this game.

And Domenech never decides to do something just because it would be good for somebody else!
