You Say Gençlerbirliği Spor Kulübü, I Say…That Team From Ankara
By: Trent | July 16th, 2007
Don’t you just love it when English-speakers make a big deal about not being able to pronounce proper nouns from other languages? What jerks. Unrelatedly, on Thursday Arsenal will play their second preseason friendly, this time against Gençlerbirliği Spor Kulübü. The Gunners will face the Turkish club in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria.
Maybe some of our Turkish friends can fill us in on Gençlerbirliği; all I know is that they play in the Ankara Derby against Ankaragücü and the club’s name loosely translates as the Union of Juveniles.

Oh no not them! Rovers were humiliated by them in the UEFA Cup a few seasons ago. The painful memories come flooding back!
