They Say Goodbye, We Say Hello… Hello Hello…

By: Homey | June 14th, 2011

Well, we’re about to find out what happens when mommy and daddy give the keys to the new BMW to their punk teenage kids. Or something. Let’s just hope we get it back into the garage safely. But seriously, our new group is attempting to do the impossible, which is fill the shoes of our outstanding predecessors, the Martin and Sairax. I, personally, have no chance of matching their knowledge level or insight. But I hope we can keep this as a fun place to come and chat about all things Arsenal. It’s the comments section that will keep it vibrant, more than anything else. We’re just going to try to facilitate some good discussions, if nothing else.

I guess since I started trying to put together this team a week or so ago, I became the unofficial “leader” of the group. That’s a bit ironic, since I’m by far the least-knowledgeable person in the group. (Perhaps not coincidentally, I’m the only American as well.) And that’s really not a false humility. The only soccer I watch is Arsenal, the World Cup, and a few other games of note. I would list Arsenal no higher than fourth among my favorite sports teams, behind (in order) University of Pittsburgh football, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and University of Pittsburgh basketball. I’m certainly more of an American football fan than a soccer fan. However, in a small town in Texas, I can talk about American football with almost anyone. But I don’t know a single person who can talk intelligently about soccer, aside from a Man United fan I occasionally bump into. (And what’s the fun of that anyway?) So I stumbled upon this website a few years ago when Travis was still writing, and I found it to be the only place where I could chat about Arsenal, and soccer in general. That was great. Over the years, I’ve become a much bigger Arsenal fan, but I’m still really just learning things. I’ve followed Arsenal since the Bergkamp/Overmars era (as I like to think of it), but it was only a casual interest in those days. I’ve really only become a big fan during the time of our trophy drought, which isn’t always very fun.Another thing I should mention as a warning to our readers outside North America is that I use very “American” terms for everything. Instead of football, it’s soccer. Instead of a pitch, it’s a field. Instead of fixture congestion, it’s a busy schedule. Instead of a clean sheet, it’s a shutout. You get the picture. I know the words that most of the world uses, but I prefer to keep it real and talk like an American. You know, since I am one and all that. (But the good news is that, unlike most Americans, I can at least find Canada on a world map.)

I’m not really sure right now how we’ll divide up all the blogging. But the hope is that by having four of us, we won’t have a huge workload, and we won’t get exhausted. And hopefully, we’ll be able to cover all the games somehow. Despite my status as group “leader,” I don’t expect to blog any more than the others in the group.

As I mentioned in the comments section a while back, I miss all the Sunday games due to church. I think JG will handle most of those games. Due to work, my ability to watch midweek afternoon games is hit and miss. I’m a self-employed lawyer, and I work mostly from home. However, I’m in court, visiting clients, and making jail visits a lot, so I’m away from the computer at least half the way on workdays. Sometimes I’ll be able to watch the midweek games, and sometimes not. But we’ll try to get everything covered somehow.

Brenton already posted his intro yesterday, so I’m just going to include what Darren and JG have written.  Then JG will have a new blog up either tonight or early tomorrow, I believe.  Also, one last note.  I’m head is spinning in trying to get all the technical stuff sorted out.  I’m totally new at all of this.  So if we’re having trouble inserting photos or links or whatever else, please be patient for the first week or so.  Ok, without further ado, here’s what Darren and JG wrote for their intros:

Darren:

I’m Darren, and I have been annoying Martin on this blog a number of years, correcting him on meaningless tidbits of his writing such as ‘no, it’s not a 4-3-3 Martin! It’s a 4-2-3-1! Honestly!’ I hail from Edmonton, Canada, which makes me sound like an Inuit, that lives in an igloo and the only sport I know is hockey and punching people wearing skates. And while that’s almost true, I do spend 9 months under snow pretending I understand the nuances of tactics and fancy myself an idealist of beautiful passing game which Arsenal play. One might wonder how a savage of the north comes to love Arsenal. The answer is simply Dennis Bergkamp. See, I am of Dutch descent, and hold close many Dutch traditions, and my father always watched Holland play. To me, there is no better player that ever lived. Not Messi, not Maradona, not Pele, not Cryuff, but Bergkamp. Now this may be mad, but that’s all I knew growing up, and so the Dutch maestro is king, RVP is world class and any argument saying otherwise will not be heard. Plus he scored this beauty, forever etched in my memory. Bergkamp brought me to the glorious Arsenal, and there my heart remains, forever. Be warned however. I abhor transfer season, I think all players are mercenaries (except Jack and RVP), and I love finances, tactics and a good argument.

JG:

Hello! As regular readers know, I read this blog daily and more often than not I left comment here. It is an honor to get the chance to write for the Arsenal Offside and while I don’t have much in terms of experience, hopefully this will let me grow as a writer and improve my skills in writing about the Arsenal. As for my tastes for the Arsenal, I’ve been following them since the 07-08 season (the season I started following soccer/football in general) and can’t wait for them to win a trophy- hopefully this coming season! I consider myself a bit of a fanatic and try to watch all the games that I can. My favorite player is RVP, and hopefully he’ll play more than half a season. I also think that Manchester United and Stoke City are scourges on the footballing Earth and we must do our best to defeat them in a honorable way. I hold the opinion that if real life were to be played like a Football Manager game, then Arsenal would be Ultimate Masters of the Footballing Universe. Alas, life is NOT played like a Football Manager game, so UEFA Champions League champions will have to suffice.

yes the boston bruins beat the vancouver canucks!! Glory Glory AMERICA!! lol  I will however ignore the fact that most of you guys are canadians and the only american is sadly a steelers fan :( lol jk jk please excuse my "team america jokes" and my "anti steelers jokes" because the only thing that matters is that we are all ARSENAL FANS :) haha I very much APPRECIATE the fact that you guys have taken on the responsibility of running the site after our beloved Mom and Dad have left i honestly thought the site would discontinue but im so glad it didnt so thankyou very much for doing what needed to be done.

  • Chicago Gunner

@Darren_V:disqus seeing that goal that Bergkamp scored against the argies made me love the game. I was 8 years old watching that game with my dad, oma, and opa, and we went nuts when that goal was scored. I have an authentic Oranje kit with 8 and Bergkamp across the back from that tournament. I'm guessing the v is for van ______. mine's soest

  • Haha, I remember that goal well. With my brothers and father. I have 3 different Oranje jerseys myself, and love all three. Just no name on any, sadly. The V is not Van, unfortunately, but my mother's maidan name is a Van. der Linden if you will.
    Nice to meet you! :)

    Perry,
I should add something about that Bergkamp clip.  Darren e-mailed me his intro for me to post in the larger blog.  There was a link in his e-mail to a Bergkamp clip, but I couldn't open it.  In the interest of time, I wanted to get a post up as soon as I could.  So I just found one of my favorites and went with it.  I'm really not sure that was the exact goal that Darren had in mind.  But I'm sure he wouldn't object to it too strongly.  =)

  • It was that goal, but not the correct link. I wanted the dutch one where the guy goes crazy 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp! 'Dennis Bergkamp!'
If you had asked, I could've told you to check my facebook links, it's there ;)

  • KingBurns

So glad to see that someone is taking over the blog as have been a reader for years and love a good arsenal debate! Just wondering do any of you go to the games or from the UK ?

  • Homey_Mills

Nah, we're all from the New World.  I've been to London once myself.  But it was during the summer, and nothing was going on except Wimbledon.

  • KingBurns

Haha oh thats cool, if you guys want any photos or things from Emirates let me know (I'm a Londoner, Arsenal regular and Proud!)

  • Homey_Mills

Thanks for coming to the site and reading what "foreigners" have to say about your favorite team.

  • KingBurns

Mmmm, well as long as you get it right mate i dont mind were you come from! Hopefully you can give us more of an idea about our American owner because to be honest us British fans have no clue who the hell he is

  • Homey_Mills

Well they call him "Silent Stan" for a reason.  So we don't know much more about him than you do.

  • Wait, Arsenal is only your 4th choice club Homey? Who allowed you to write a blog anyways?!

  • If he had included that in his emailed proposal I would have told him to stuff it and approached the Offside admin guys myself. It's not too late, Darren. I've got pitchforks and flaming torches in the trunk of my car.

  • Homey_Mills

I thought Canadians were a kinder, gentler sort.  I suppose not.

  • You haven't seen Canadians on skates then, have you?

  • Weedonald

2 Canadians..........this blog is sooooo lucky!! The lone Yank will even things out a bit I hope. Seriously good luck in your new blogging efforts.....from a fellow Canuck!

  • Gigi_man

Hey my comment disappeared! well it was something like congrats to you all.
And now it was: great choice of a song for the title!

  • Gigi_man

    Hello! Nice introductions!
Theres two Canadians then? I wont be around here tonight ooppss, if we lose I will cry and no one will listen, if we win no one will answer me... plus is the Mrs. Gigi BDay today!!
Now, more seriously, congrats, I know you guys love this team so you will be devoting a lot to this site. Mommy anf daddy can be proud (even if the BMW gets a little scratched haha).

Any news on what appears to be another usual Wenger summer...?

  • Homey_Mills

JG is going to be posting some transfer stuff soon.  Stay tuned.  And yes, we have two Canadians.  Nothing I could do about it.

  • DanKing9

All we can do then is try to outnumber them in the comments section.

  • Homey_Mills

Whew, getting stuff posted on this site is a LOT harder than it may appear.  At least for me.  I had to edit that post a million times just to get the fonts to match up and other issues like that.  And I'm still figuring out how to just put a little text on the main page and then let it jump ahead to the actual blog, without all the text on the main page.  Brenton explained it yesterday, but I'm slow.
Anyway, hope this keeps y'all going for now.  JG should have something up at some point about actual soccer news.

  • Homey_Mills

OK, just figured out how to cut off the text on the main page and make it jump to the blog.  But now the font is a little uneven.  Oh well, I'm going to stop messing with it for now and come back later.
