Actually, These Nicknames Are Pretty Weak

By: Trent | April 13th, 2007

Of course Arsenal have been bereft of goals lately. That much is painfully clear. Let’s hope that changes against Bolton this weekend, as there are at least no new injuries to report. But could there also be an alarming shortage of good nicknames at Ashburton Grove?

This piece examines some of the existing nicknames among the Arsenal players. And folks, “Fab” as a nickname for Cesc Fabregas, while maybe not terrible, does not set one’s heart aflutter. And that’s one of the better ones. As for captain Thierry Henry, I’ve always thought TH14 worked better in print than in conversation.

Nevertheless, any ideas to help out the Gunners? What are some nicknames that you and your friends employ when discussing the Arsenal?

We have started calling Thierry, Cherry. Sometimes Papa. Ljungberg has been renamed Abba Freddie. And we especially like calling Theo Walcott “Foetus.”

yes, we call our manager ‘papa’. ;)

rosicky’s nickname among the czech national team is ‘dumpling’. it’s his favorite food to eat.

going astray on that logic, i can suggest the following:

    cesc ‘pizza’ fabregas

    william ‘mealy-mouthed’ gallas

    nieves ‘chorizo’ denilson

    and a couple of others:

alexander ‘the opposition’s 12th man’ hleb

    jens ‘the king’ lehmann

    cesc ‘discocesc’ fabregas

Well I’ve always liked Jens’ nickname, Mad Monk. I’m a Brazilian and know many Gilbertos — I just call him Gil.

Swiss Tony for Senderos has always amused me. But I’m terrible with nicknames.

Rosicky has “Little Mozart” splashed all over his website. Not sure that’ll catch on as well in England, though.
