Adebayor & Citeh — Inevitable at this point?

By: travis | July 14th, 2009

As Martin pointed out yesterday, new rumors have cropped up about Emmanuel Adebayor going to Manchester City. Well those rumors appear to be gaining steam, as the Daily Mail is reporting today that a fee of £25 million has been agreed upon.

At first glance, this is a puzzling move, as City rewards Adebayor for what many regard as a lackluster 2008-09 with a contract paying him £170,000 per week. That is what is perplexing. Knowing that Arsenal already rewarded him last season with an improved contract, it’s still somewhat sad to see the typical greed come forth in footballers.

That being considered, the sale would be a massive coup for Wenger — if he moves to replace Adebayor with a cheaper striker like Marouane Chamakh, and also uses that money to invest in a central midfielder. While Chamakh is a unproven entity in England, what Arsenal fan won’t trust Arsene Wenger’s opinion on a talent in the French league? One needs to look no further than Bakary Sagna as his last successful signing out of the continent.

The other concern of letting Adebayor go is the lack of goals. He’s tallied an impressive 46 goals in all competitions the last two seasons, but I don’t think that would be hard to replace. With the re-signing of Van Persie, the improving health of Eduardo, a full season of Arshavin — heck even through the often-maligned Nicklas Bendtner. The Dane tallied one goal less than the Togo striker so it’s not to say his contributions would be missed.

A forward line lacking Adebayor won’t hurt this team. Not if the right signing is made in central midfield. And with this sale, Wenger could easily afford going after an Inler, or perhaps a bigger name. Aside from Chamakh, another name out there is Klaas Jan Huntelaar — though he looks set for Stuttgart. Whatever happens today, keep checking this space here. Martin and I will have the updates as they come in.

if ade goes, we’ll lose the physical presence up front. his heading skills are way better than those of any of our strikers. bendtner can head well, but he’s still young and learning. van persie can score a few headed goals but that’s because of poor marking. we won’t be able to play route 2 football if we can’t play our game. Champions have the ability to carve out wins even if they are not at their best. ah, whatever. im typing this even though i feel very sleepy. off to bed then.

The money is too good to turn down, i think he is over hyped. I think we will end up signing a young boy from France we have never heard of, if we turn a profit like we will with Ady then it’s a good idea

sodiumwaste, last season if I recall adebayor, maybe scored less than 3 goals with a header, plus if u r talking about physicality bendtner Is better than him in my opinion if he could just improve his finshing, I dont thing we need a stricker up front weve got bendtner, robin, arshavin, vela, and eduardo, all what we need is a world class holding midfielder thats it

100% agreed Gooner. Holding midfield is the missing link. With all the players you mention there should be goals. I like Ade and still think is a class player, but if he does not want to be a Gunner…let him go for good money,
