Arsenal 0 Manchester City 0: The Mack Truck in Front of City’s Goal is Blocking My View

It was a frustrating game to watch, no doubt. Don’t let the scoreline fool you though, we did play well today. It reminded me a bit of last season’s game at the Emirates, though we were much more aggressive going forward today. Echoes of Inter and Chelsea parking the bus in front of Barcelona crossed my mind. However, you can only play the team in front of you, and the team in front of us came to defend and catch us on the break once or twice if they could. We remained patient throughout the match and kept trying to get forward. At the end we tired a bit and our subs didn’t make too much of an impact, but we were also very unlucky today. We fought hard, but Man City’s defense proved to be too strong and resolute for us to grab the winning goal.

The first half started at blistering speed. Not even a couple of minutes had elapsed before Nasri and Jack exchanged passes before Fabregas received the ball and shot just wide. We were piling on the pressure and got another chance with Jack pouncing on a deflected shot by van Persie. Robin went on to hit the post and Theo was constantly finding his way in behind Zabaleta and the Man City defense. In the 27th minute we came oh so close by hitting the post not once, but twice. Nasri crossed a lovely ball into Fabregas who smacked it against the bar followed by Theo rattling the bar on the rebound. If Theo’s ball had gone in it wouldn’t have counted anyway since he was offside, but our general play was fast and furious. City were sitting deep and hanging on for dear life.

Man City’s best chance came shortly after when Tevez made a beeline for our goal, but he ended up shooting over the net. The half was almost all Arsenal. We kept pressing and pushing. After the first 20 minutes, the intensity went down a little and Man City gathered themselves and managed to retain their shape and gain some composure in defense. We weren’t hesitant to shoot. Jack managed a great strike, but it was straight to Joe Hart who couldn’t catch it, but almost pushed it back into the path of Song. City’s other chance came through a corner where Tevez was left free, but it came to nothing and we ended the half with some regret at not taking our chances and cursing our luck.

The second half saw Man City look even less ambitious to find the net as it seemed like they had 8 men behind the ball at all times. It can be incredibly difficult to penetrate a defense like that. Basically you can send in crosses from out wide or try to thread the ball through the eye of the needle in the middle of the pitch. Arsenal kept trying to find the answer and unlock the Man City defense, though the play had slowed down from the first half and Man City barely ventured forward.

Robin managed a long range shot in the 49th minute that went soaring over the bar. Theo was fed out wide by Cesc but was being closely watched by Zabaleta. City weren’t taking any chances in conceding. Another good chance came shortly after when van Persie and Cesc exchanged passes from a short corner, but van Persie ended up shooting from a tight angle instead of finding a teammate. I was getting worried by this point. Was it going to be one of those days? (It was.) Man City took off Jo and brought on Adam Johnston who added a bit of energy down their right flank. He had a few runs at Clichy, but he dealt well with him, and our defense did much better at covering each other when someone moved out of position. I could see the players yelling at each other a lot more and generally communicating better, which was good to see.

Theo was taken off in the 70th minute for Arshavin, which clearly upset him. He walked off the pitch shaking his head wondering at what more he had to do to stay on, I suppose. I thought at the time that it would be a good change. Theo’s pace was a threat, but Zabaleta was beginning to contain him better in the second half. Also, Theo’s skills on the ball failed him more than once. He tends to get the ball stuck under his feet at times and he wasn’t picking out great options when he got in a goal scoring or assisting position. I thought that with Arshavin coming on, he could worm his way into the Man City area, as he is capable of doing, and cause a bit of a scare to their defense. It didn’t really turn out that way though as his substitution made little impact. Perhaps he could have moved out left where Nasri was having less of an effect, but that could have left Clichy exposed to Johnston’s quick runs.

In the end, we came out with no goals and Man City didn’t even have one shot on target. Bendtner was brought on for Jack, though it made little difference with him being stuck out wide. Going into extra time we saw both Sagna and Zabaleta sent off for a clash on the sidelines after Zabaleta tackled Sagna. There didn’t seem to be anything in that particular tackle. Sagna had been fouled several times during the game, so maybe he was fed up. Words were definitely exchanged and Sagna just lost his head and headbutted Zabaleta. It was disappointing to see, especially since he was having such a good performance and you would hope he could have contained himself for the few minutes left in the match. I’m not sure if either player deserved to be sent off, but I can understand Sagna getting the red. We’ll miss his services in our upcoming games.

Player Ratings:

Fabianski 6 Quiet night picking flowers and dancing a jig around his goal. Ok I’m not sure he was doing that, but then again I barely saw him the whole game.

Britain Premier League Soccer

Sagna 6 Was having a really good game, but it was ruined when he got sent off at the end of the match. Now we’re without reliable Bac for Leeds this weekend in the FA Cup, Ipswich in the Carling Cup, and West Ham in the league. He could be missing a worse run of matches, but still, it was a stupid thing to do and he should have tried to keep his composure.

Djourou 7 Very solid at the back. Not much more I can say since didn’t have a whole lot to do.

Koscielny 6 Still gets caught out of position at times and lacks a bit of pace. He is very good at tackles on the ground though and managed to recover on the small mistakes he made.

Clichy 6.5 He had a good game. Looks much better when he has a winger in front (in this case, Nasri) to help out defensively. Was more no-nonsense when clearing the ball from our area, which was a frustration with him earlier in the season. Crosses still weak.

Britain Premier League Soccer

Song 7.5 MOTM Another great performance by Songinho. Solid defensively, got back to cover for our backline when he was needed, and looked comfortable linking up with the midfield in attack. If he keeps playing like this, perhaps we’ll keep a few more clean sheets this season.

Walcott 6 It wasn’t his best game. As I mentioned earlier, it was really his skill on the ball that was letting him down. He tends to get ahead of the ball at times and didn’t get too many good shots in. Never stopped working though, and constantly got back to help defend.

Nasri 6.5 Not as influential today, though when we have all of our best players fit, he doesn’t have to take the reins and carry the whole team on his back. He’s still an important part of the attack and our pass and move play. Where he didn’t enjoy as much success was when he tried to dribble his way into the City area where the City defense were able to contain his threat easily. Perhaps he is better used out wide on the right, or when interchanging with the other 3 members of the attack.

62947544

Wilshere 7 It’s quite amazing how a player who just turned 19 can fit in so seamlessly with the likes of Fabregas, Nasri, Song, and van Persie. He was always calm, twisting away from defenders, and looking for a teammate to retain possession. Didn’t have too many forays forward, but that wasn’t his main duty. Could do better when he’s faced with a scoring opportunity.

Fabregas 7 Was pulling the stings again, trying to find that golden pass. He found a few good passes but the goal never came. Remains the best player to play in the hole behind the striker.

van Persie 6.5 Fans seem to be very divided on him at the moment. His movement on and off the ball is fantastic and he does get into great positions. He isn’t an out and out number nine, big man in the box type, which means that he isn’t going to be that target for crosses like Chamakh or Bendtner. I still think that he gives us something that no other striker does, but he really needs to get a couple more goals and at least make the keeper work. Could have been taken off or at least moved when Bendtner came on.

Subs:

Arshavin 4 He had a good 20 minutes to make something happen and instead all I saw was him misplacing passes and getting dispossessed. Very disappointing.

Bendtner 4 Was deployed out wide on the left when really he would have been better off as the big target man in the box for the last few minutes while we tried to cross the ball into the box. Made little impact on the game.

Are you all ready for some Sairax-brand positivity? Ok here goes. We still have a game in hand on City and squeezed four points out of them this season when we only got one last season. Chelsea and the spuds both lost their matches today, which opens the gap between us and them. The biggest issue is that we are still 4 points behind Man Utd who have a game in hand on us. Luckily, they still have to face Chelsea at home and away as well as Man City at home and the spuds away. We also have another chance to take some points off of them when they come to the Emirates in April. There’s still hope, but Man Utd are definitely in the drivers seat.

Maybe some of you don’t want to hear this but we played a good game today. It was very much a team performance where no one player had to step up to save our butts. Defensively we had a decent game, though we were never really threatened. I think that with the chances we missed, quite a few balls off the post, and Man City’s stubborn defense, we were a bit unlucky to come away without a win. It happens though. They concentrated so much on not conceding and rode their luck quite a bit at times themselves. At the end of the day, not a terrible result, but one that is extremely annoying. If we keep playing in this same manner I still think we have a good chance at stringing together a very good run of results for the next couple of months. We don’t have another league game for a while with FA Cup and Carling Cup matches around the corner, so we’ll just have to accept the result and focus on pushing ahead in the cup competitions. Keep the faith.

For the first time this season I'm genuinely encouraged by our "game". With the exception of the Wigan match(where we fielded a weakened side),this current mini run of form has shown a dramatic improvement in every aspect of our basic play. Although we inevitably tired, we pressed continually as hard as we could. We passed quicker making it harder for the oppo to fill good defensive positions and we followed passes with far more purposeful forwards runs. This starting xi is looking settled & in the groove and it is my opinion that it shouldn't be altered unless enforced. I'm not interested in hearing about resting players. We are chasing to close down what should be presumed to be a 7 point gap. The priority is to close the gap. If we manage that, then find players burnt out then that is the time to deal with those problems......there's no point being fresh but too far away. We are currently hitting the kind of level of champions.... Let's not lose that but instead be ruthless with it!

  • Gigi_man

    Off subject:

So says Football 365, but is he unwanted? I mean, I could want him over here...
The same Sun article suggests that Liverpool could move for unwanted Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland, while former Liverpool full-back could be heading towards Fulham. Haven't they only just bought a left-back?

The other gossip is in Justarsenal:
ts in the media suggest that Arsenal are chasing the signature of want-away Liverpool defender Daniel Agger.

    Who would you rather have?

  • J___V

Neither would improve us although if your talking Liverpool, one player who could be got for cheap & would play alot better for us would be babel but his attitude stinks. Personally I say get Connor wickham whilst we still can.

  • Geoff Partrige

For once I agree with Wenger's post game assessment. We did everything but actually score.

If we keep playing with that kind of committment then we will win most of our games. City have spent a fortune and have a great defensive set-up and an excellent goal keeper. £350m and they posed less threat to our goal than any team I've seen us play this season or last, CCup and FA Cup against championship sides included. West Ham this season were probably the most defensively minded "lets see if we can nick a point" team so far this season. They were more threatening than City last night.

What does this say about Sheik Mansour? He doesn't care about football. Love him or loathe him, at least Abramovich actually likes and understands football, has developed a love of Chelsea and sacked their best ever manager when he thought they were too boring.

And what about the number of City fans? They had the absolute minimum allocation ususlly seen for bolton, Blackburn and Wigan or those far eastern european teams in the CL. I know it was midweek but that wasn't the support of a big club. Maybe the City fans are tiring of seeing a mutli-million team of defenders.

  • FredJacob

Wat Can theo practice in order to get a better 1st touch and have better close control of the ball

  • J___V

Slowing down! The fact is the quicker you move the more difficult most technical skills become. I read this rubbish that beckham had been giving tips to theo on how to cross which is ridiculous as he only ever crosses a ball that is barely moving.....the technique is so much easier coz it's easier to time. The technical aspects of his game will only improve by slowing down at the vital time & composing himself.

  • Gigi_man

Yep, he needs to know when to slow down after a quick run, kind of Titiesque, in his very earlt days he was really fast, and then he learned how to uptempo and downtempo so he could caress the ball.

Hopefully Theo will get there, i dont know, in the next 3 or 4 games? :)

  • bapdum

i say we should get a petition for song to shave off his beard. golden beards just arent meant to be

  • Chris

Was that Song ? I thought we'd signed Abel Xavier out of retirement ..

  • FredJacob

If he playing that good with it, he could keep it on

  • Gigi_man

Thx for the report and he positiveness Sairax!
I agree with what most said: we got 4 pts out of City and we got a game in hand; I took a look at our, and other top teams fixtures and they still face each other sometimes, we only have Manure at home. Still hope.

One question: why is Sagna suspended for Carling and FA cups? isnt there like a "different competitions" rule, I mean if hee gets sent off in UCL he keeps his run of games in EPL and so on?

  • Unstoppble2509

they are all FA competitions so the FA can ban you for those matches. whereas UCL is UEFA competition so the FA has no bearing over them.

  • Gigi_man

Oh I see, because all are FA. I thought even because of that they were considered different compets re the cards and stuff like that..shame that we wont have him, Carling is imo our real chance of a trophy...

  • FredJacob

Although we have a game in had on City that means we can only go to second, me i actually wanna win the league this yea so i hope we don't self destruct and have a run of good games, I mean two trophy this year is not to much to ask the league Cup ( which the boss never won) and Premier League

  • Gigi_man

I am with you. If we keep a decent run of games, which we actually have a fairly easy run now; we may make it.
ManUtd, City, Chelsea and Spurs, they all have tougher fixtures and some evene among them.

  • bapdum

apparrently JET is gonna go to blackburn on loan?

  • Gigi_man

Wasnt it Bolton who wanted him badly? Bolton did good for Jacky, I was hoping for a Bolton move.

  • either he goes to a club for loan, or ply more often in Carling cup or FA

  • Guest

It was a good game. We didn't seem to be at our very best, but that can be put down to the City defense. I mean, most of the game was played out on their side of the pitch, but we just couldn't get the final shot in. It was so frustrating to see the number of times we hit the woodwork. I swear, is their net smaller by like an inch or something? Still, Hart made a good save to deny Robin, I have to admit.

Wenger shouldn't have subbed off Theo. With him there, we had a good chance of having a breakthrough run. Especially to switch him for Arshavin. No offence, but taking into account his performance lately, he wasn't what we needed. We could've had Chamakh in, to switch it up and go for inside the box crosses.

Don't know why, but for some reason this draw felt like a bigger let down than Wigan. Perhaps it's because we deserved the win soo much, to not get the full three points was, bah.

Now we're a brilliant 4 points behind United, them with a game in hand, against Blackpool. Bright side though: when United and City went head to head last time, it ended in a goalless draw too, no? And Chelsea should have enough time to recover before going against United; we've finished our matches against Chelsea and City with a decent amount of points, points that United can still drop; Liverpool may pull a complete miracle out of the hat like they did against Chelsea; And for once, just once, Tottenham may be worth rooting for.

  • FredJacob

Yea but the league is United to loss and they haven't played all the good for the season as yet so let hope they never hit gear

  • I dunno, I thought taking Walcott off for Arshavin was a smart tactical move which simply didn't pan out. City were sitting very deep by that point and there was no way Walcott was going to get behind the defense again. Arsenal had been looking for it, and it wasn't working. Walcott is medicore at best in regards to close control, and that is what Arshavin typically excels at. A touch of magic and skill is what was required to win the game, and you can't say Arshavin doesn't produce that out of nothing, depsite his largethtic style.

  • Gigi_man

Yep, and its not because I love Arsha, but that is his skill, and we cant blame AW for the change. We can blame Arsha for not shining...

Thats one of the reasons why it frustrated me, its the Inter Barza the other way around: last year Barza was invincible so we were knocked out by an invincible; Inter beat them...This year we were so good, beating teams etc, but then City became our Inter; conclusion: if you want it, hunger is big...you can do it. Tactics were good, perf was not top notch, better start being for the rest of the season.

  • FredJacob

Hmm so if we clone the two off them then we get the player than can win of some games

  • third eye

Usually I am cynical, but today, I must say, it was an overall good game for Arsenal. We just could not convert our chances. I was clueless and I wondered why Wenger did not field Chamkah. This game would have been the perfect opportunity for him to play alongside Van Persie and Nasrie I believe.

I believe that this game showed us that Walcott is a great player when used as a sub it is...

Fabregas and Nasrie duo is coming to fruition and coming great too. I am thrilled about their collective progression. Nonetheless, they need more playing time together and, more importantly, someone who can score from their numerous through balls and clinical passes.

Song was magnificent. Never lost the ball and played his ''Songhino'' tag in due time. He literally slalomed through City's defense to ultimately failed the final pass. Nevertheless, it was a great effort. Finally, I would like to congratulate Wilshere for his superb performance. he may have lost the ball twice or three times during the game, but his composure, defensive skill and distribution were exactly what Arsenal needed. As Sairax said, it is as if he had always been with the team which only emphasizes how talented he is and how far he can progress. Hum, I already fear for Ramsey... Unless Wilshere goes more up front, there will be a though competition for the spot next to Song...

As I said, Arsenal need someone who can put the ball inside the net...

  • third eye

Oh, I forgot... I want to give credits to Djourou who played admirably well when dealing with aerial threats and kept composure. Wenger really need to consider him as Vermealen's partner whenever the later comes back.

AS for Laurent, I still have goosebumps whenever he plays. He gives me mix feeling and I really have the sensation that he is error prone...

Oh, and Sanga should have accepted Zabaleta's apologize and walked away smiling to show the referee that he was wrong to card them too severely. I was kind of disappointed by his attitude...

  • FredJacob

Nah Sagna was right in not accepting the apology in my opinion since we are at war with city, cause they are going to be one of or biggest rivals in the future

  • Zabaleta definitely said something that set Sagna off. The tackle wasn't bad, but words were exchanged and Sagna lost it. He's usually so calm, I've never seen him so mad. I don't know what Zabaleta said to him, but knowing Sagna, it must have been pretty bad.

  • FredJacob

I wish players would stop head butting and throw some punches, i find when they do the head but they look like they trying to kiss the other person, i mean if you wanna get send off make it be for something, so the next time people would think twice about interfering with you

  • Oh that's brilliant, let's get the player banned for 6 months for throwing a punch then

  • FredJacob

Well am sure no one ent messing with him again

  • bapdum

yeah it looked like it. while sagna was still on the ground zabaleta turned around and started muttering something which prompted sagna to jump up and get in a head lock with him

  • RVP was on target, damn the post. this was just like last years match , where man city drew also. no effort done by man city, which is dumb. we gunners did the best, just the post was there to save joe hart, lol i even see song with a beard, wtf lol. i even felt like punching zabaleta!!!!!

  • I saw TA in the crowd and Titi. Paddy on the bench and Kolo on the pitch (dammit why'd you play so well today?). The youth and reserves were in attendance. Lovely :)

  • Perryvs

you forgot to mention RVP's rip from about 25 yards that would be find the net against most keepers

  • My bad, thanks for the reminder!

  • I've been thinking about it since the end of the game (sitting in purgatory at work, no less), and I keep coming back to what I said on Twitter - we took 4 points from MCFC this season. I don't think anyone would have complained if we were offered that deal in Sept. Throw in the fact that we've got 3 points from our Chelsea fixtures and again, I don't think that's a bad thing. So while I'm irate over the actual game itself based on Mancini's tactics, I'm not irate over the result and what it means for our season. We didn't play poorly in any manner.

I think the next run of Premiership games is more important. Beat the guys we need to beat. NO bad losses. Especially this year, you can sneak a championship being average against the top teams and taking care of business with the rest. I highly doubt there's been a year where you could win the championship being excellent against top teams but losing to bad teams. There's way more "bad" losses lurking out there than there are "good" wins.

tl;dr - its all good so far, just beat the baddies now

  • Yea, I agree. We really have to stop dropping points in matches where we 'feel' we should get 3 points.

  • Zito_v2

We absolutely dominated this game, if nothing, it reassures that we are not afraid of any team (at least this season) and that we're out to win every game.

  • Lucky for us we did not give up the losing goal, these are they type of games that really break our confidence. We dominate through and through, and yet we come away with draw.
