Arsenal 3-Celtic 1 (Updated with Highlights)
By: Martin | August 26th, 2009
Well, that’s it–we’re through to the Champions League with room to spare (5-1 on aggregate). Several things to talk about in this one, so let’s dive right in.
I suppose there’s no choice but to start by talking about Eduardo’s penalty. It was absolutely not a penalty, and absolutely a dive. I like Eduardo, but I won’t mince words–he should be ashamed of himself. Diving is cheating, and does a lot to undermine the integrity of the game. And if I’m going to criticize Gerrard and Drogba for doing it (which I do), I’ve got to be even-handed about it. I hate seeing it, and I especially hate seeing it from someone on my club. I hated it when Eboue used to do it on a regular basis, and I hated seeing Eduardo do it today. And I won’t defend it or justify it.
But. Having said that, I think it’s pretty unrealistic and naive to suggest that it really had a dramatic impact on the tie. We had a 2 goal advantage and we were playing at home against a team which has been pretty dreadful about scoring and getting results away in European competition. We were in control of the match from start to finish, and we were going to move on to the group stages whether Eduardo gets the penalty call or not. It’s as simple as that. So I’m not particularly interested in blindly naive theories about how it “changed the course of the tie” or some other such nonsense, which the announcers wouldn’t shut up about.
We created a bunch of chances, and could have scored 5 or 6 if it weren’t for Artur Boruc, who showed himself to be a world-class keeper today. Celtic hardly tested our backline, and I don’t remember Almunia being really tested at all.
The second goal was a superb team effort, with Eboue finishing the move nicely. It capped a good game for Eboue, and the goal was deserved. Arshavin came on and made a brilliant move to get the ball far enough away from a defender to get an accurate shot off by Boruc. Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati then scored a pretty amazing goal to pull one back in injury time. On to the ratings:
Almunia 6.5. Didn’t do much at all. Can’t really remember him even being involved much–there was one time when I remember him yelling at the guys on the wall, I guess that was pretty good.
Sagna 6.5 Didn’t do anything spectacular, but had a solid performance and didn’t make any mistakes.
Clichy 7.5. Good game for Gael. Did a good job containing McGeady all game, and put himself in a couple good positions to put balls into the box.
Vermaelen 7.5. Yet another solid, mistake-free performance for TV5.
Gallas 8. He didn’t score, but he got forward and made some dangerous runs on several occasions. Has Gallas ever had a run of form this good?
Denilson 7.5 Provided good cover for the back, and made a couple of great passes to put guys through. Really seems to be blossoming this season.
Song 8. A couple of good defensive headers in the box, as well as being a ball-hawk in the middle of the field.
Diaby 6.5 Decent performance, but was pretty inconspicuous the whole match. Will have to do better to be a regular first-team player.
Eboue 8 Man of the match? Showed what he can do today–made dangerous runs, looked dangerous down the wing, distributed the ball well, and tracked back. Virtually unrecognizable from the Eboue of years past.
Eduardo 5.5. Generally looked dangerous, but poor finishing and diving to earn a penalty spoiled the performance for me.
Bendtner 7.5. Best game of the year for St. Nick, although that’s not saying a whole lot. Great play to set up the second goal, although he squandered several great chances to score. Still yet to find the scoresheet this season.
Arshavin 8. Bringing him in was a risky move, but something tells me that Alex Ferguson, who was in attendance, won’t be sleeping all that well this week after seeing Arshavin turn a defender off his hip and coolly finish a placed shot past Boruc.
Ramsey 6 Picked up a knock almost immediately upon coming on, and had trouble getting going. Did make a good run with the ball into the box, but couldn’t quite chip it over Boruc.
Wilshere 6. Pretty anonymous in limited action.
So we’re through. We managed to avoid the embarrassment of missing out on the Champions League. More importantly, now we’re guaranteed the Champions League money, which hopefully means Wenger has a little extra money to spend in the next week.
Group stage draw tomorrow, so hopefully we’ll do well with that. It’s done by coefficient, and we’re in pool A, so we’ll avoid the other elite teams. Hopefully we’ll get a decent draw and have a clear path to the knockout stages. I’ll update after the draw. And then it’s on to Manchester United on Saturday for a massively important early season matchup.

I’m totally with you on the Eduardo commentary. My other thought about it was that even if he was tripped, was there any chance at all he’d get that ball and be able to shoot? It was going out of bounds anyway.
Moving along… the group stage draw could really go in a lot of different ways. The “bottom” pool has German champs Wolfsburg. I’m shocked at that. So we could have them in a group, or one of the complete reject teams in that pool. And group two could be Real Madrid or Inter, or it could be CSKA Moscow. Wow. Big stuff at stake. Hopefully we’ll be strong enough to advance regardless.Posted from

from what i saw good ratings, but maybe the dive was a psycological self defence move? eduarrdo shouyld be affected by what happened no?
Martin you are getting closer to be the best reporter of gsmes ever!
Homey i think we will advance, i prefer to be dramaticx sometimes but this is the best start in a long time and even if we have been in a group stages without having to be in play offs, this arsenal in my opinion can beat a lot of sides, of course if we stay focused, in shape and not get carried away,Posted from

btw let me praise the play of eboue s goal, an arsenal signature so to spek, wonderful.
and…let me celebrate arshavin first european with aresenal goal!!!! a great play, a typical arsenal signature, a great move and…wonderful finish, tomorrow w have to stay focused for the group that we ll play, but tonight i sleep with a smile on my face,Posted from

@Homey – don’t be too surprised that Wolfsburg was ranked low in the pools. They are traditionally a mid to low table team in the Bundesliga and I think they pretty much surprised everyone last year by bringing home the hardware over the likes of Bayern or Hertha Berlin.
I’m surprised Boruc didn’t move after Euro 2008, he supposedly had interest from AC Milan and Aston Villa. Ended up resigning with Celtic though and made a few blaring crucial mistakes in SPL and International play last season that killed the transfer hype, he did go through a bit of a rough patch with family issues however.

Martin I think 5.5 is harsh for eduardo.. he deserves more. I bet that if we were losing and we got the penalty that could win us the tie non of us would be talking about the dive. I agree it is not a penalty and its a dive, but I also think that he was smart because he was going nowhere if he did not fall

It was a shame to see what Eduardo did and although it goes on all the time you don’t like to see it coming from your own team

When you see that there are clubs like Sevilla and Bayern in the first pot and clubs like Real,Inter and Lyon in the second….those seeds are ridiculous.
My ideal group would be:
ARSENAL
Rangers
Olympiakos
Debreceni
And my worst case group:
ARSENAL
Real
Marseille
WolfsburgPosted from

Am I the only one who thinks Eduardo isnt a disgrace? If you watch you’ll notice that he controls the ball- it doesnt get away from him. SO he could have stayed there and waited for Boruc to plow through him, or he could have went down a little early to protect himself… Maybe Im being biased but the amount of attention this incident is getting is an absolute disgrace. Why weren’t there calls for bans every time CR7 took the pitch? Or Drogba? The hate is ridiculous for a call that to me is not as obvious as people make it out to be…

MoMONEY:
I completely agree that there is a substantial degree of anti-Arsenal stuff in the media. It also doesn’t help that we were the only English team playing in the Champions League so it’s the sole focus of the footballing media. But I disagree with you that Eduardo did it to protect himself–if you watch the video, you’ll see that Eduardo was already past Boruc, on his feet, when he went down.
Gooner:
I guess I just disagree–I think diving is a form of cheating. And I don’t view guys who dive and get a call as “clever” or “smart,” although that’s what everyone always says whenever Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, or Steven Gerrard do it. I wouldn’t say that any more than I would say Barry Bonds was “smart” to take steroids so he could hit a bazillion home runs.

It is very stupid when Drogba or Ronaldo or anybody else makes a clear dive and then scores a goal and in the next match when someone against them makes a dive complains.I want to say that there are just a few players that never in their career dived.Maybe it wasnt always a penalty or a situation dangerous for the oppositions goal but it was a dive.It is sad but the dives becamed normal in football. And there is to much hype about all this.Celtic would lose even without the penalty. It is also stupid that the Celtic players are saying that Dudu should be suspended. If they suspend him then the players that MoMONEY mentioned would play just the half of the matches in one season. They make about 5 dives every match.

TW14–
I agree. Ronaldo took an egregious dive right outside the box, which led to a free kick on which United scored against us in the Champions League semifinal last season, and no one said boo about it, much less talked about suspending him. Drogba is a complete disgrace, and it took basically assaulting a referee for him to get a suspension, and even then it got reduced. I’m not against the idea of suspending divers generally, but it would be a complete travesty for them to apply it in such an uneven way.

like it or not, it is part of the game. that said it is a bad part of the game, but i don’t see how it will ever be cut out. it is getting totally blown out of proportion by all the arsenal haters out there, of which there are several.
there really is a double standard between arsenal and the rest of the big four. the media/pundits are always quickest to pounce on arsenal and i think part of it has to do with the fact that it is a team full of foreigners.

another example of perceived bias is how the media made a freaking huge stink about possebon (man utd) getting clattered and just glossed over the horror tackle that shattered dudu’s leg.

Thats right evaldo, I mean, if it was me who had that horrible tackle breaking my leg wide open, I would also try to avoid a goalie! It has to be understood under his circomstances, no?

The fact (as I see it) is that Eduardo took a calculated fall as the goalie approached him, knowing with contact or not he would probably get the pen. It has become a part of the game and a “skill” of strikers to know if they cant score, to toe-poke it past the keeper, try and get contact and go down. If he had managed to get more contact, there would be no problem in fans and media’s eyes. The fact is though, he didn’t execute the “skill” well enough.
It has become a part of the game – I for one hate it, but strikers are, I am convinced, coached to look for the contact if they cannot score in that situation. And we actually praise the ones that get it right with talk of “good strikers instinct”, and attack those that get it wrong as “divers”. And it just so happens that Eduardo just didn’t execute his move well enough.
Diving is horrible to watch and goes against what was once the spirit of the game, but that spirit is all but gone. Deal with it, and move on, because it aint going to change!

… also, I have to give credit to Wenger for not pulling his classic “I did not see it”, and admitting it wasn’t a penalty, while at the same time sticking up for Eduardo. And even more credit to Tony Mowbray for playing the incident down and admitting it probably wouldn’t have changed the result. Class Act.
Leave it to the Scottish FA to complain, and milk the stage while they have it.Posted from

Casimir,
My point about Wolfsburg is that a defending German champion should automatically not be in the very bottom group. I know they’ve had mixed results in past years. It just seems odd seeing them with teams I’ve never heard of in the bottom group.Posted from

Thx for the update Theo! it seems doable right? although my main fear is the nonchalance and losing focus (Hull nightmares and so forth…)

Homey – I can agree with that. I was just commenting on how they probably do the seeding.
Another comment about the penalty:
I’ve watched Boruc dozens in times in national team matches, and since for the most part Poland’s defense has been atrocious, Boruc has had to come out for plenty of one-on-ones and swipe the ball away with his hand and has never given up a penalty in those circumstances in NT matches, and there was absolutely no contact there. Eduardo still had control of the ball and saw he was about to run it out of bounds and just took the dive.Posted from
