Arsenal 3-Rangers 0: And They Say Arsenal Doesn’t Win Trophies…

By: Martin | August 2nd, 2009

Arsenal wins the more or less meaningless Emirates Cup with a dominant performance against Rangers:

Jack Wilshere puts in a man of the match performance with 2 goals, and Arsenal controlled the match from start to finish. More importantly, this is 2 good performances in 2 days, both coming against clubs in the Champions League.

I gave my thoughts on the Atletico game earlier, but to add to that:

1. You don’t want to read too much into a couple of friendly performances, but Wilshere really looks ready to play at this level right now. He may be like Cesc in that he’s just one of those special cases that matures so quickly he can play at a high level at a very young age. But this presents Wilshere with a dilemma, for this year and for the future. Cesc is our main playmaking central midfielder for the present and for the foreseeable future, and Theo is our main right winger. Hopefully neither are going anywhere anytime soon. I guess you’d have to hope that at some point, Wilshere takes over at right wing and Theo moves up top as a striker–that’s the only way I really see the three co-existing at the club long-term.

2. Cesc looks good, and not far away from being the playmaking force he was in 2007-2008. He’s in good physical shape, is working hard, and looks ready to start pulling strings again.

3. Where’s Vermaelen?

4. Wenger may have tipped his hand as to who will be playing on the left in Nasri’s absence–Arshavin spent most of the day out wide and performed well out there, although Rosicky was great yesterday and looked good when he came on.

5. Merida looked decent as well–there’s no place for him to play with us this year, but he’s good enough to play in the premier league. A loan move to a team like Burnley might be the best thing for all parties involved.

I agree with your point martin, and I think that I read on sky sport that vermaelen is injured. anyway, I have a question do u think we need new signings?, if yes. In which position, who are the possiblilities that we are lokking at?

    Gooner:

I love Song and think he’s a good option as a holding midfielder, but at the very least I think we need cover for him. And Silvestre is entirely too high up on the depth chart for my taste-with Toure and now possibly Senderos leaving, I’d like another decent center back, too.

    Alexandra:

No thanks–Arsenal’s got enough debt as it is…

How about Wilshere. Very impressed with this kid’s game today. The boy is simply damn good. Our attack was great. We kept pressure constantly going forward and hardly ever gave them the chance to settle. I’m concerned about our defense tough. We didn’t look very convincing. If it weren’t for Alumnia they probably would have gotten one or even two back. Song made some good plays but he isn’t a starter at either DM or CB. We performed well throughout the tournament but are still in need of re-enforcements, especially in defense. Does anyone know how much we got for Senderos?

I read 4-5 for senderos. Money isn’t the issue, I would like to see Viera or matiudi come in. Chamakh would be great since alot of our forwards are injury prone. I d say thats prob all we need. Dont let traore or vela go on loan.

So basically we have 44 mil to spend. Not bad at all. I agree that Viera needs to be signed ASAP if we can’t find any better alternative. I read that Wenger wanted to sign De Rossi from Roma. Rossi will never sign for us. He got offers from Real or Barca (one of two) and flatly turned them down. I’m sure they offered more than we did or will. He won’t leave Roma. We need to sell Silvestre for however much we can get for him. He way beyond his prime or this league.

I guess I’ll be the negative one. These pre-season results are being sold to us as assurance that the team is ok and in good shape to win something this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if no more players were bought. And we certainly won’t spend even what was brought in from sales, yet again.
To answer the question of where Wilshere will be in a couple years…He’ll be the starting central midfielder after Cesc is sold to either Barca or Real for a ton of money… and that money will be kept in the coffers to pay off “debt” on the stadium, and a few million will be spent on another 17 year old French player who we’ve never heard of, but has great potential. Yup, I have it figured out at this point.

After thinking about Senderos transfer, i think it was bad business on our part to sell him, even more to Everton. He had a year left on his contract I know, but now we are looking a little short in central defence. If any of our players in that position become injured at any point we’re screwed. Also we keep selling to direct rivals. Man U sold us Sylvestre because he was used up as evidenced by his crapy performances. This sale, like the previous two before them, may come back to bite us in the ass. Senderos was never a bad defender, he was just never numero uno or number 2, but was good non the less. Bringing in Viera will be good for Arsenal but not necessarily good for Song. Song has some growing up to do but will never achieve his full potential because he keeps being moved from CB to DM. Versatility is good but he will be a jack of all trade and master of none. He will grow into an Eboue type player and God knows we don’t want that. Instead of throwing players into positions that they don’t necessarily specialize lets invest the 44 million into adequately filling those “iffy” positions.

man i am so tired from reading rumors and rumors. I agree with homey when he said that we wont get any player in this transfer window. and even if we do, I dont think they’ll be good cuz now we are linked with chamakh, viera… I love viera but he’s gone now and he’s not the same old one. chamakh sucks!

With Arshavin and Wilshere out wide and cesc with hopefully vieira in the middle and Eduardo and Walcott up front would be one of the most dangerous teams in the prem..
