Arsenal News Roundup: Should he stay or should he go?

By: Perry | July 21st, 2012

Thanks to the random thought I just had when writing the title, I now find myself listening to the Clash! What a great way to spend a Saturday morning. Sadly though, I don’t think I will be getting too much enjoyment out of writing this piece.

So Arsene has given one of his first interviews as Arsenal manager since the end of last season, and the news couldn’t be much better!

Abou Diaby is back from injury, and ‘fit and available’, so I think that we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. I just can’t imagine us having a bad start to the season now.

In addition, Arteta has also recovered from injury and will be ready for the start of the season assuming no new injury. Sadly though, there will be a few players missing for the start of our season. Wenger have confirmed that Wilshere, Rosicky, Sagna and Frimpong will all miss the start of the season. Obviously Sagna is a really important part of our team, but I think he should be back in the team by September, so he shouldn’t miss too many games. However, Wenger is being very cautious when talking about Wilshere’s return, which is a bit worrying, and we all know how fragile Rosicky is. These players all missing the start of the season takes a fair bit out of our midfield for the start of the season. For our midfield trio, I can imagine the starting three would be Arteta, Song and Ramsey, with the backups being only Coquelin and Diaby. I find that to be very concerning, but I guess it is fair to say that there is a pretty good chance that the midfield will be bolstered before the close of the transfer window.

In more exciting news Ryo Miyaichi looks like he may be given the opportunity to head out on loan to Ajax for the coming season. I think that would be great for the club and the youngster. I think a lower Premier League club (such as Bolton last season) would be a better option because obviously we want him to be well trained in the league, but also because he is less likely to want to extend his stay. However, if it doesn’t seem like there is a Premier League club interested, then I think the club would be daft not to send him to Amsterdam for the season. Who knows, Dennis might teach him a few tricks!

In other transfer news, the Carlos Vela deal is finally completed, with the fee having been quoted as €3 million, with 50% of any future sale. A good deal for the club I guess, and I wish the young Mexican luck in his career. I was always a fan of the player, and I was disappointed that it never quite worked out for him here, but I’m sure he can be very successful elsewhere. Hopefully this is an omen of things to come, and we can move on a few of our other fringe players. The chairman of Zenit has confirmed their potential interest in Andrei Arshavin , so that would be a very good move for Arsenal if he could be moved on. As much as Arshavin is a great player, I don’t think him staying is good for he or the club.

Finally, Arsenal have announced their squad for the Asian tour, and of course the most noticeable exclusion is our captain, Van Persie. I am personally not surprised, but no doubt this will be thrown around in the media quite a lot. I don’t think it changes anything at all, but it is no doubt an encouraging sign for his potential suitors.

Fergie has come out this week and confirmed United’s interest in the player, and we of course already knew that City and Juventus were interested, so if we were to sell, at least there is a bit of a bidding war going on now. However, it seems increasingly likely to me that we will hold onto the player unless we get a ridiculous transfer offer from one of the three. The number being suggested is £30 million, and I think if any of those clubs paid that sort of money it would be seriously concerning. I have no doubt that he is worth that sort of money to us, but I can’t imagine him being worth that sort of money to anyone else.

I thought I would finish this piece with a poll. Let us imagine a situation where we were offered £25 million from City for Van Persie. Should he stay or should he go? I will let you guys decide.

I apologise for the short post guys, I had a few ideas for some more interesting stuff to write, but sadly I have had a busy weekend, and I have a few more assignments to do by the end of this week. I hope to get something up during this week, but I will at least get a post up next weekend.

Until next time.

It's been about ten forevers since I've been to this site or posted a comment.  I needed to end my blogging, as I've been busy with work and a daughter due in about two months.  But just today I was pondering some thoughts about the transfer window, and I had nobody to listen.  So I thought I'd pop in here and there, but do so in a lot more moderation than the old days.
Anyway, here was my thought for the day: A few years ago, we were in desperate need of more depth, especially with fragile players.  But now, we seem to have pretty solid depth just about everywhere.  So that's good.  But I'm still frustrated with the unwritten rule that we never buy a player for more than about £14 million.  If we'd simply pooled the money for Giroud, Podolski, and Cazorla (assuming that happens), then we could have at least been in range of what Neymar would cost.  And wouldn't that be a major signal of intent to RvP, Walcott, our competition, and every other player in the world looking for a new club?  As it stands now, we could have around six pretty solid players competing for two wing/forward spots.  And that's great and all, but I'd much rather trade some of that depth for a serious thumper.  I think we have the resources to put together a starting 11 that rivals any of the big boys in England.  I think where we would suffer is that we won't be able to also afford to have £20 million players on the bench.  But oh well.  Give the kids more chances to compete.  We likely can't win the league, but in a knockout competition, we could hold our own if our best players are healthy.
Ok, rant is over.  For those of you who couldn't stand me in my blogging days, sorry to pop in.  I won't be around all the time these days though.
Glad to see JG and others are making a go of it.

Homey! It's good to see you back, even if only briefly. I have actually been trying to get some sort of contact details for you recently. If I could grab an email address that would be great.

I have to say I couldn't agree more with you about pooling some money together. Obviously I quite like all of the signings, especially if we do end up signing Cazorla (unlikely, I feel), but I don't think its the best way we could be doing our business.

Whilst I wouldn't be a fan of signing Neymar himself, a signing of that sort of stature is just what the club needs. Much like when Dennis Bergkamp was signed and the club was really propelled to world class, I think it could show that Arsenal are ready to take that next step (again).

I'm at millsie77 at Yahoo.  Glad y'all are taking up the writing again.  I always thought that this was a good Arsenal blog, going back to the pre-Martin days when Travis was writing.

Just popping in to say hats off for the Cazorla signing. He will be to you as Silva is to Citeh. Brilliant player who makes everyone around him better. Not sure why he hasn't gotten a big team until now, probably same reason as Silva hadn't before he did. But he's a steal at the price.
