Arsenal Season in Review, Part IV

By: Martin | May 29th, 2009

Okay, the end of season wrap-up stuff today. And we’re giving out awards. Is this kind of stupid and pointless? Yes, of course. But it’s the only trophies these guys will have won this year, so we press on…

Best 11 (based on play over course of entire season):

Almunia

Sagna-Toure-Gallas-Clichy

Walcott-Fabregas-Denilson-Nasri

Arshavin-van Persie

Bench: Adebayor, Bendtner, Fabianski, Song, Djourou, Eboue

Player of the Year: Robin van Persie
Most Pleasant Surprise: Alex Song
Biggest Disappointment: Emmanuel Adebayor
Best Newcomer: Andrei Arshavin (Honorable Mention: Samir Nasri)
Player We Missed Most: Mathieu Flamini
Biggest Win: Arsenal 3-Villareal 0 (April 15)
Biggest Loss: Arsenal 1-Manchester United 3 (May 5)
Best Moment: Winning penalty shootout over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico (March 11); (Honorable Mention) Eduardo’s return, in which he scored a goal, against Burnley (March 8 )
Worst Moment: Kieran Gibbs’ slip leads to an easy goal by Park Ji-Sung, effectively sinking our hopes of advancing to the Champions League final; (Honorable Mention) Aaron Lennon’s injury time goal grabs a 4-4 tie for Spurs at the Emirates in a game in which we led 4-2 in the 89th minute
Best Performance:Andrei Arshavin, 4 goals, Liverpool (April 21)

Goals of the Year:
3. Andrei Arshavin, Blackburn:
Arshavin beat his man to get to the byline, and everyone watching and playing in the game, including the Blackburn keeper, assumed he was going to try to center it. But when the keeper didn’t come out to close him down, he buried the ball in the roof of the net from a seemingly impossible angle. Brilliant play.

2. Eduardo, Burnley:
Okay, it was the FA Cup, and against a Championship side. But my goodness, what a strike. Arshavin saves the ball from going over the byline, Song puts Eduardo in, and Eduardo makes the keeper look foolish with a one-touch volley off the outside of his left foot. Eduardo only made 4 appearances for us this season, but moments like this remind us of what a clinical finisher the Crozilian really is. Very, very few strikers in the world would have had the cojones to try that, and even fewer still could have pulled it off. Magical stuff.

1. Emmanuel Adebayor, Villareal:
This goal would stand on its own even if it weren’t on such a big stage, but the fact that it was makes it that much more special. Nice ball in by Cesc and an absolutely inspired bicycle kick finish by Adebayor. It gave us the all important away goal, and forced Villareal to play football when they came to the Emirates the next week. If he hadn’t gotten that goal, and we had lost that match 1-0, Villareal would have looked to close up shop at the Emirates, and who knows what would have happened. Special, special goal.

My starting 11 going into next year:

Almunia

Sagna-Toure-[transfer]-Clichy

Walcott-Fabregas-Song-Nasri

Arshavin-van Persie

I am partially assuming that Adebayor and Gallas may very well be gone (more on that in the days to come), but even if they stay, I’m not convinced they are our best options. Maybe I’m naive, but if we add a top class center back this summer, I think that’s a team that could challenge for trophies. We shall see.

Well, that’s that, then. I’ve got a piece on why Robin van Persie was my player of the year tomorrow, and a two-part “summer preview” running Sunday and Monday, and that will be it for the big stuff until August. But Travis and I will certainly try to keep on top of Arsenal news. There’s bound to be a lot of transfer rumors, 99% of which will be utter crap made up to sell newspapers or get hits on their website, but we’ll write about it nonetheless.

I have very much enjoyed writing for the site since I came aboard this spring, and look forward to my first full season at the offside in 2009-2010. Thanks to Rob and Travis for letting me in. I would also like to extend a very sincere thanks to all of you for reading and all your feedback in the comments section–evaldo, homey, foreverzidane, and the rest–and I hope you stick around for the summer and next season. Cheers.

Best game of our season was our win v. Man Utd at the Grove, no question. Villareal was great but beating the mancs was better. Best goal was Eduardo’s cheeky “beach goal” v. Burnley.

Best newcomers, Gibbs and Arshavin. Gibbs was just called up for the youth team.

And a big shout out to our fantastic youth squad who won the Academy league and the FA Youth cup. At least they won a trophy — two of them, in fact. Another big shout out to our CC campaign with such terrific displays, esp. against a full strength Wigan.

Also a big shoutout to our women’s team who managed to sweep all before them even without key players who left for the new women’s league in the US.

Biggest shock: Wenger’s inexcusable decisions for the FA semifinal. No Arshavin (and subbing him on in the f—–g 75th minute!), no Song, poor tactics throughout. He totally bottled it and it’s difficult to forgive or forget, esp. as our youth squad won the FA youth cup and with the men’s FA cup final coming up tomorrow.

Biggest knob of the season: Phil Brown, who managed to unite a very fractured gooner nation.

Adebayor’s goal was superb! A goal to be remembered forever!

Arshevin’s goal was delicious. Another one to be remembered.

Carlos Vela’s goal during a match of the Carling cup (or F.A. cup, I’m not so sure) was better than Eduardo’s goal.

I’m in favor of giving the number 10 jersey to Arshevin. He already deserves it. Even if Gallas repost, he’ll be out in no time. Then, I would take Senderos’s jersey and give it to Fabregas’s next partner in the midfield. (Then again, if Gallas still wants to stay, I would give him the number six jersey).

    Players that needs to go:
Senderos( no need to explain why),
Bendtner(Ok… I’ll let another year for this guy… But, if he’s unable to step up by then, he should be sell) Amaury Bishoff (He will never play),
Johan Djourou (Same thing as Bendtner…He really needs to step up. He has nothing special except his height),
Denilson or Diaby (Diaby is more physical but way more inconsistent. As for Denilson, he’s an extremely average player…)

Player that need to play for the first team more regularly:
Carlos Vela (Why is Wenger keeping him in the shadow?), Wilshere? (To me, he’s too young and you don’t want your youngster to get hurt badly),
Kierian Gibbs? (Well, a loan would be better for him),
Armand Traore (Wenger needs to test him out in order to know if he can keep him or not…)
Henry Lansdbury? Aaron Ramsey? (Their cases are similar to Wilshere’s)
Emmanuel EBOUE ( Yeah, I know, people don’t like him… I was one of them… But I started to like this guy. He offers so much… He even surpassed Bacary Sagna at one point. He needs to be given more playing time. He needs to play the right-back spot more regularly)
Thomas Rosicky (OKay…. I don’T know for you… but he was nowhere to be found. He completly vanished from our minds….),
Arshevin (I hope he’ll be a regular starting eleven)
Bonus: A experienced player that can play BOTH CB and DM. I believe Wenger tried that with Eboue. But, Eboue needs to play on the wings. So, Wenger had to relied on Denilson, Song and Diaby who weren’t 100% reliable.

Finally, I read all your Season reviews, Martin, and I found them very accurate. AS you said, if next season we don’t win something, then it could be add on the list of the bad achievements of next season.

Everyone’s blaming GIBBS without taking into account that the ball coming in wasn’t defended well to begin with.
Far too many feeds made their way from the right into the box. True he slipped, no question, but the other defender shares the responsibility equally. Watch the video!

Thanks for the blogs Martin. I was thinking about something related to an earlier blog issue. If Cesc was tired from last year’s Euro, what about the Confed Cup this year? I really think all these guys need a break. I don’t mind the Confed Cup being held, but play it with 2nd level guys who aren’t playing a million games a year already.
In addition, although it sounds odd, I think soccer needs to take a break in the calendar to allow fans to miss it a bit. The NFL is by far the biggest thing in the U.S., and it has the longest offseason in sports. Fans are overjoyed when it finally comes back. I dunno… just a thought.
