Arsenal Top 5 Goals

By: Martin | July 31st, 2009

Hola, amigos. There isn’t too much else going on on this Friday, but I figured that, as a break from our normal despairing about Arsenal’s squad/new uniforms/transfer policy/Diaby, we could do something positive today.

If you recall, the official site has been running a summer-long event to name Arsenal’s top 5 all-time goals. I’ve largely avoided talking about this, because it all seems to be a calculated attempt to get people to pony up for Arsenal TV, which I find distasteful because most of you can’t afford it (I know I can’t). Anyway, the event is finally finished, and Dennis Bergkamp’s goal against Newcastle in 2002 was named the top goal. Again, though, it’s frustrating because you can’t see it if you’re not a subscriber.

Anyway, in an attempt to stick it to the man, fight the power, put the system on trial, etc., I figured I could just track down the top goals on Youtube and embed them here so we could all enjoy these great moments from Arsenal’s past. Enjoy:

5. Andrei Arshavin, Blackburn, 2009:

4. Dennis Bergkamp, Leicester City, 1997:

3. Robin van Persie, Charlton Athletic, 2006:

2. Thierry Henry, Manchester United, 2000:

1. Dennis Bergkamp, Newcastle, 2002:

Couple of comments. First, Martin, check the third word of your post. It should be “there” and not “their.”
Anyway, I love the Arshavin goal where Bendtner (Martin’s hero) is running in wide open screaming for the ball. And Arshavin ignores him and finishes a difficult one himself.
And finally, were there no classic Arsenal goals before 1997?

    Homey–

Good catch–I’m usually pretty fanatical about grammar stuff, I can’t believe I left that in there. It’s fixed now.

On the classic Arsenal goals point, I think it’s mainly that it was a fan poll, and most of the fans doing the voting probably don’t remember most of the goals that happened pre-Wenger.

By the way Martin, thanks for sticking it to the man. On Chamakh, I’ll admit I haven’t seen him play. But it says a lot that the only teams interested are the likes of Sunderland and others at that level. I can’t say I’m excited about him either.

Henry’s turn and volley vs ManU has always been the best in my mind. Bergkamp’s was great, but it came from an excellent ball into the box. Henry was outside the box, well marked, with his back to goal. You’ll never see anything like it again.

    BAM

And c’mon Arsenal fans, no love for Henry’s backheel vs Charlton? Surely better than Arshavin’s effort.
