Arsenal v. Coventry: Cap1 Cup Preview (kinda)By: Felegy | September 25th, 2012
Well, we kick off the good old Capital One Cup tomorrow against League 1 side Coventry. I’m not going to pretend to know anything about Coventry or what to expect from them. I’m sure they will come out and play spirited as it is a big stage playing at The Emirates. Even with them maybe feeling extra inspired it is still a game we should handily win. My question to you guys is; do we care about winning the Capital One Cup? Would we be happy if we won that cup and nothing else this year?
My answer; yes I care about us winning the Capital One Cup and no I would not be happy if that is the only trophy that we were to win this year. I think hoisting the Cap1 Cup could be just the thing that this squad needs to make a hard push to win other (more important) trophies as the season comes to a close. Don’t forget, the final for the Cap1 Cup is played in February. Winning that competition could give us just the right boost at an opportune time to finish the season strong. We have a fairly newly assembled squad, wouldn’t it be nice for them to win the first trophy possible!? Plus, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we JUST NEED TO WIN SOMETHING!!! We need to break this cycle and the Cap1 Cup provides another opportunity to do just that. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want us fielding our normal starting 11 against Coventry but I would like to see a nice mix of youth and experience, which is exactly what Arsene has hinted at.
Frimpong will be on the bench for us after a long absence due to injury and Wenger has stated that Miguel will be in the lineup as well. I would also bet on seeing Santos get a run out as well as Djourou. Arshavin and Chamakh will most likely get some playing time as well. Should Giroud be given some time to maybe find some form against a slightly lesser opponent? Hey, why not? The guy needs a goal from somewhere. I’m curious to see what type of midfield we start with as well. Hey, maybe “it’s about time” that we give Theo a shot playing as a pure striker. Or maybe we should just leave him sitting on the bench.
I was going to write a separate piece about the recent rumblings from one Theo Walcott before I remembered our game against Coventry. So I will keep this short and sweet. Theo Walcott is on his way out of Arsenal in January. He recently made some remarks about how not renewing his contract was about football and not money. Uh huh. He wants us to believe that he would move to play as a striker and not for more money. Uh huh. So he wants to play as a central striker? I wonder what he thinks of Gervinho getting that chance instead of him recently, considering how long both of them have been at the club. I’m pretty sure this is a clear statement to Theo that it’s not going to happen here at Arsenal. So if that’s the reason, he is on his way out. If it really is about the money (which it is) than he is on his way out because we are not going to pay him 100K a week. Why? Because he is not worth it. I’m not sure if any top EPL team would be running Theo out as a striker, or pay him 100K, or both. Well, maybe Liverpool would. Only time will tell how this saga will play out but either way Arsenal will cope with or without him.
I’m not sure about a liveblog tomorrow as I usually leave that to Perry. The recap will depend heavily on whether or not I am able to actually watch the game. Yes, I do watch the games before I blindly throw out those player grades. Plus another big game this Saturday against that classy former England Captain and Chelsea. I will be nice and vocal on the liveblog Saturday morning. Until then… Be well fellow Gunners!
