Arsene Wenger: We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Signings
By: Trent | May 10th, 2007
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has again claimed that winning next year’s title will not depend on a transfer market shopping spree this summer. He didn’t rule out new acquisitions, but he cautions against panicky purchases in the wake of this disappointing season.
Sez the Frenchman:
“The problem is that because we have had a disappointing season, everybody wants you to buy. I have to really think if that is needed or not because there is an element in our team that they will progress because they are young. Also, what do I need to add, if I do need to add something? I will do what I feel is right for the team and for the Club but the situation is not always to buy. Manchester United let Ruud van Nistelrooy go, they bought only Michael Carrick and now they play for the Premiership.”
True enough. But I hope that this is Wenger’s way of supporting his current squad, i.e., by not moaning about the need for a mass infusion of new players. But there are definite needs for this team next year. A threatening winger wouldn’t be a bad start. And I’m not sold on the defensive alignment either.
And anyway, there’s no need for A-Dub to use ManYoo as a blueprint; Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson don’t have identical philosophies, after all. Earlier this season, when asked why he never had a drink with SAF after a match, Wenger responded: “I prefer wine to whiskey.”
Oh snap!

Why change a fourth-place team when you can keep the same guys and finish fourth again? I thought they were going after Ribery. Any word on that?

Peter: Arsenal are still reportedly interested in Franck Ribery, but the list of his rumoured suitors is considerable.

Perhaps Wenger should consider a more direct approach. After all your penalty against Chelsea came from a Lehmann lump and interestingly enough your ‘Superstar’ Willie G has now said in the UK press – ‘we should be more like Chelsea.’ Whatever that means!!!
Strange for him to say that because when he joined Arsenal he said ‘Arsenal play beautiful football!!!!’
Shame you cant score ‘beautiful goals’!!!
