Barnet Preseason Friendly Preview

By: Martin | July 17th, 2009

Yes, I know, it’s a meaningless friendly. Yes, I know, it’s against a League 2 side. Yes, I know, many members of Arsenal’s first team aren’t even in camp yet, and won’t play. Yes, this is just a glorified practice session, and ultimately doesn’t mean a thing.

But you know what? It’s football. It’s a match, it’s a final score, it’s players wearing Arsenal shirts playing together. And dammit, it’s been a couple of months since we could say that, so I’m doing a preview and you can’t stop me.

Barnet have a local partnership with Arsenal, and actually host the Arsenal Reserve team, so this will be a friendly in every sense of the word, and a home game of sorts for many of the Gunners who suit up. More importantly, Barnet is where I started my management career in Football Manager 2009, getting them promoted after 4 seasons in charge, at which point I immediately abandoned ship for a team with more money (just like a real manager!). So I actually know the video game versions of many of the Bees we’ll be playing against tomorrow. Which means precisely jack and shit, but I spent days managing Barnet on that game and I feel like I have to at least mention it when the subject comes up.

The club has announced the squad for tomorrow’s match, which as far as I know can’t be seen unless you shell out for Arsenal TV. My best stab at the starting lineup:

Almunia

Eastmond-Gallas-Vermaelen-Silvestre

Wilshere-Randall-(Emmanuel-Thomas)-Rosicky

Simpson-Arshavin

Hardly a star-studded lineup. But the two big stories, obviously, are Thomas Vermaelen’s debut in an Arsenal shirt and Rosicky’s first game action since January 2008. Hope it goes well…

    Dear Rosicky,

Please be careful. I would like to one day see you in action again in an actual Premiership game. Full stretching routine, no over-exertions, and all that.

    Your fan,

    Tom

Speaking of Vermaelen, what’s anyone’s guess about who the starting central defensive pair will be if everyone stays?

Obviously it depends on how Vermaelen settles in, but at this point my guess would be Gallas and Vermaelen.

Simpson, great! that was one of my answers for the question of lack of attack if Ade left, ok the guy is young, but hope he does well and then scores goals in the Premier.
Good luck to the team, it is a great thing a friendly game, and Vermaelen will play, what’s not to like?
I can’t watch it but all the best Gunners!

1-0 Arsenal, Arshavin just before the half. Build up through Sanchez Watt. Arshavin brilliant, moving off the ball well.

Vermealen is so-so. Djourou should never be played again on the right side: too slow. Silvester is a waste of first team spot. Wilshere and Watts try to d something with the ball.

Rosicky and Arshavin have a good understanding. However, Rosicky still needs improvement such as Wilshere, Watts and Emmanuel Frimpong.

evaldo: you’re right! We are screw!

…I think we should give them another chance. I didn’t see the end of the match, but, by the look of it, Vermealen won’t be a formidable sign-in just as Arshavin. It will take more time for him to settle in.

Then, what happen to Wilshere and Frimpong? I heard so much hypes about them that I was expecting so much I think. They both kind of deceived me. In the other had, Nacer Barazite and Francis Coquelin are two great prospects for the team. Sanchez Watts tried to link up wt Arshavin and Rosicky which didn’t exactly work until the end.

Now, don’t come here and say: WE don’t need Adebayor.
    Is he greedy?:Yes
    Is he talking too much?:YES
Is he the bst striker Arsenal ever had since Thierry Henry’s departure?:YES

Arshavin played like a second striker. There were no real target man and I don’t think Van Persie could be the one. So, if Arsène wants to gain a trophy this season, he must keep his squad intact. Otherwise, the team’s chances to win something will be compromised.
