Big Huge Giant Season Preview, Part III

By: Martin | August 12th, 2009

Preview week continues, and today we get to what the season will bring for our beloved Arsenal. Today we deal with questions about Arsenal’s summer activities. As always, we’re interested to hear what you think, so drop us a line in the comments.

Question 7: If You Had to Give Arsenal’s Offseason a Grade, What Would it Be?

Martin: Well, I’d like to be able to say incomplete on the grounds that we hopefully will bring in a few more players, but as it is, I’ll say C-. We got decent money for both Adebayor and Toure, so it’s hard to be too upset about those sales. Amaury Bischoff didn’t offer us anything anyway. All those moves, in isolation, are fine. But we haven’t put the money back into the squad, which we badly need to do. As of now, Vermaelen is the only addition to the senior squad, and we badly need another center back and a holding midfielder. I’m in the minority in that I think Alex Song will be very good in the holding midfielder role if allowed to play, but at the very least we need cover for him in case of injury. And if Senderos goes to Everton, Silvestre is 4th on the center back depth chart, which would be absolutely, completely unacceptable. In short, the squad still has the exact same problems we had at the end of last season, because Wenger didn’t make a move to fill any of the squad’s needs. It’s doubly frustrating because we have tens of millions of pounds in the bank from sales, the league is there for the taking, and the club just sits on its hands. I don’t see how anyone but an accountant could possibly spin this as a successful offseason for Arsenal.

Travis: It’s hard to say before the season. But that’s why the offseason and the Internet exists, so people like Martin, myself, and all of you can be critical and voice our opinions about our club. To be honest I like the sales of both Adebayor and Toure—we certainly won’t have a problem scoring goals (provided that everyone stays intact), with Bendtner, Arshavin, Van Persie, and Eduardo. At the same time, it’s hard to imagine a club making just one addition improving, especially after conceding so many goals last year. So I’m going with a C. Right about average.

Question 8: Which Newcomer Will Make the Biggest Impact for Arsenal This Season?

Martin: Hmmm. When we wrote this question, I think it was assumed that there would be more than one option. But there isn’t. Thomas Vermaelen.

Travis: I’m going to make Jack Wilshere a “newcomer” just so I can cheat at this answer—only because he’s awesome and because of a technicality (he’s a newcomer to the first team) that’s my final answer.

Question 9: Who Should Arsene Buy Before September 2?

Martin: Well, another striker for cover would be nice (but not necessary), and another holding midfielder is pretty important. But after seeing what injuries did to our backline last season, I think more than anything we’ve just got to get another center back. Right now we’ve got Gallas, Vermaelen, and Djourou as viable options. Senderos is rumored to be on his way to Everton, Song is really a holding midfielder, and Silvestre is terrible. So if I could pick anyone, I think Brede Hangeland would be the perfect fundamentally sound, physical/aerial presence we could so desperately use on our backline. He’d also be a perfect complement to Gallas, as he could mark the larger strikers and stay back, allowing Gallas to use his speed to keep up with pacier attackers and get forward in the attack when the opportunity presents itself.

Travis: This team needs some steel in the middle. I don’t know who exactly that could be—when I played Football Manager, Miguel Veloso was a great pick up (I won the treble in my first year with Arsenal). Realistically speaking, someone like Gokhan Inler would be a step in the right direction. That or a central defender like Hangeland, someone to provide some more depth in the middle. Unless Alex Song becomes a dominant force in midfield, I can’t see this team going beyond fourth place.

Why is it that when Wenger tries the 4-3-3 he puts RvP on the left? It seems to me that RvP does his best open play work coming in from the right side (ridiculous Carling Cup goal in extra time vs Wigan in ‘05, crazy shovel-dribble move vs Inter, etc.). Anyone know?

Gooner,I also doubt that we will buy Inler,Hangeland looks like the most realistic and for me best option.I just hope Wenger doesnt get scared off by the price. But it looks like he is very interested in Brede and really wants to buy him.
Also Gooner, what do you think(if we buy a holding midfielder) who is the most realistic and of course best solution?

“We certainly won’t have a problem scoring goals (provided that everyone stays intact), with Bendtner, Arshavin, Van Persie, and Eduardo.” -Travis

That’s a MASSIVE provision you make there, Travis. The only one I don’t really have worries about in that list is Arshavin. Everyone else might get injured, and often. It’ll be a big year for Bendtner. He sinks his chances, people’ll be waxing eternally with Adebayor 07/08 comparisons.

vespo : I don’t know. Those kind of questions are only answerable by speculations. Probably because he wants Van Persie to cross. And, when there will be a corner or a free kicks, he’ll well position to pass it to another teammate.

Evaldo: “i think dudu is the better player and should start, but i think him and RVP are too similar. Niklas offers an aerial threat and forms the classic big man little man partnership with RVP. what do you all think? this shit is really bugging me”

—>If I were you, I’d go with Eduardo because he’s better than Bendtner. However, my opinion is not objective because of my unjustified hatred of Bendtner :D

Theo Walcott 14: Your stating eleven is not yet operational, but still is realistic. Since Wenger has opted for a 4-3-3, I would see Walcott and Eduardo playing.

Alexinho: Hleb made his choice and prefer to act as a benchwarmer rater than to stay with Arsenal. Yes, we might not be serious title contender, but we offer great F.F.F. (free flowing football) and this counts a lot. He choose Barcelona instead to get what he wanted. In the other hand, he had to sacrifice one aspect of his game: PLAYING.

Should he have stayed with us?

—>On one side yes. We would not have spent money and probably Wenger would have use Flamoney’s financial boost to buy a defensive player.
—>On the other side, he allowed us to discover Nasri;a player I don’t keep in regard very much, but made his contributions in the overall squad.

I have mixed feelings abut him and, as time passes by, feel we made a good sell out of him. Flamoney’s situation is different. Until now, we can feel his absence which is the cause of much torments now. Who can properly fill his boots?

As much as I would like to see him in our squad in the years TO COME, I think he’s too inexperienced.

—>People, especially some of us, are complaining about the lack of experience and the excessive reliance on the youth products. So, using another young player would not arrange the problem.

—>Then, I’ve done some research, and apparently, Francis Coquelin is being held i higher regards than Frimpong. However, both are quite talented and Coquelin might be converted into a right back which could solve this minor inconvenient.

My note would be a B. for the offseason. My newcomer, since he came at mid eason, I’ll cheat too Travis: Arshavin.
Who AW will buy? if he is still on the market Matuidi and this is just gut feeling.
Martin, I laughed for the Nick number, but then again I have been targeted as a bad joker here… hahaha
Theo: once again, thanks for your positive comments!

I was under the impression that ESPN was going to show Premier League games this season, but the schedule doesn’t say so. It says everywhere online that ESPN Classic (now ESPN3) will have games. Can anyone help clear this up?

By the way, 52=25 backwards ;)

I read someway that Hangeland was already used by Fulham in Europa, so he is cup tie for CL. If we get him he will only be good for League, FA Cup and maybe Carling Cup. Fulham also wanted us to loan them a player as the bargaining chip.

That might be the reason why Wenger still looking around and will move in on the last day (bargain or cheap sales) as in his word “Usually the transfer market only speeds up from August 26 up to midnight on August 31 – and especially in the last two hours.”

My newcomer pick – I go for Ashavin (he new to CL)

man u guys are seriusly disillusioned if u think we can emmulate barcas 4-3-3 set up cos
1.where is the reliable dmf that barca have yaya toure is getting better day by day he is becoming a complete box to box dmf like viera in his past days-what do we have song
2.ok this is the epl not the la liga-there are still teams like stoke n birmingham that are effecient in defending by the no and countering with long balls or attacking with physical presence in set pieces and i dont see 4-3-3 solving the problem in any damn way

    VESPO
too ur queston why rvp plays on the right even though he is a leftie
hint- the same reason why messi plays on the right despite being a leftie(and he isnt double footed)

    AW

    good point BUT
as per Champions League regulation 17.18, one player per club who would normally be cup-tied can be registered and eligible to play, so long as his previous club did not field him in the same competition, meaning that this player can represent two different clubs in the UEFA Cup and Champions League

and i still doubt wenger on his last day transfer
he got silvestre late last year n he sucked
so i will doubt big names like inler n hangeland coming in and still think it would be 2 or all 3 of subotic, chamakh, matuidi

    AW-Fulham wanted Vela on loan.
    Alexinho-”By the way, 52=25 backwards”-Bendtner was wearing the 26; 26*2=52 :D
I wouldnt like to see Barcas 4-3-3;we are Arsenal and we shouldnt copy anyones tactic; We should play a 4-4-2 with the formation i wrote down before. If we dont buy Hangeland then I would pick Djourou and instead of Inler Song/Diaby/Denilson.Still I believe that we will buy someone, maybe a CD and DM or a CD and ST.
Also,I watched the game Croatia vs. Belarus and Dudu played a very good match,he scored one goal and started the attack for the second one.

It’s funny. Normally, the more a player establishes himself in a team, the more his number will go backward accordingly to his position on th field. However, with Bendtner, it is the other way around.

Anyway, all the good numbers are taken. No more 9, 11 or 7. 10 was handed to Gallas (And Bendtner does not deserve this number though) and 14 was too much an honor for him. Could have taken 13, but he seems too superstitious.

Yeah definitely Bendtner will get a lot of comparisons to Ade this season, whatever his goal-rate.

I didn’t even know Britain HAD ESPN, I thought they just had Sky and Setanta and all that jazz. Damn! I guess they have ESPN Classic too, huh?

    Well, shoot.

But a big day on Saturday, I’m looking forward to watching FSC all day (while I still have it, I’m going back to school soon and my mother’s cancelling it anyway at her house). Villa-Wigan, Burnely-Stoke, Arsenal’s opening day against Everton. See all parts of the table. Excellent!
