Come On, Gooners. Er, Gooners (TM)

By: Trent | August 30th, 2007

gooners.gifNot wanting even a farthing to be left unvacuumed, Arsenal have applied to trademark the terms “Gooners”. The application is still pending, so no conclusion yet.

But surely Arsenal know that the logical conclusion of such an act is the inevitable suing of its own supporters in court.

And after all, “Gooners” is a term invented by Arsenal’s fans, not some £50,000-a-week marketing firm hired by the club.

Arsenal, by the way, are no strangers to protecting their trademarks via legal action. In fact, this appellate decision from 2003 gives an interesting run down of the relevant statutory authority involved.

As long as they don’t trademark Goonies they’ll be fine. I believe Wayne Rooney owns the legal rights to “Chunk” and “The Truffle Shuffle”.

Yea, don’t like the idea too much. The term was coined by the supporters and therefore they technically “own” it. Everyone knows Arsenal is associated with “The Gooners” and, like you said, the final outcome of this is just some die hard fan being sued. Besides, if this does indeed go through, it will open the door to every club wanting to get their nicknames and mascot’s name trademarked.

Charming. Like they don’t have anything else to do. Like they don’t charge enuf for the overpriced tickets and food at the Emirates. Sheesh.

Speaking of Arsenal, law and ill-considered decisions, is the club closer to shariah compliance?

Perhaps some section of the Emirates (stadium) will kick it all off. Emirates’ other investments and territory are.
