Continue the win

I’ll be the first one to admit that a few weeks ago I didn’t think this team would qualify for the Champions League. Call me bleak, a fair weather fan, or whatever else, but they looked toothless in attack and couldn’t muster a goal to save their collective lives. Now, the goals have been pouring in at a comfortable rate, with last Saturday making no exception. I wasn’t able to catch the game live thanks to some work commitments, but from what I could gather it was both an entertaining half and a solid win.
Newcastle threatened early and often and were gifted a penalty when Almunia lost himself for a moment. Obafemi Martins strode to the spot and could only muster a sub par shot that Almunia stopped. Funny thing is if that had gone in no one could criticize the penalty taker, yet his shot left a lot to be desired. Not that I’m complaining.
The trio of goals scored in the second half were enough to put the game away. Bendtner, netting his twelfth goal of the season — placing him on equal terms with Adebayor — got on the end of an Andrey Arshavin free kick to open things up. After a Gallas error allowed Newcastle to equalize, Abou Diaby galloped through the middle of the Newcastle defense, who were missing Steven Taylor, to smash home the game-winner. A Samir Nasri goal closed the scoring out — although it could have been as much as five or six.
Now what do I make of it all? Newcastle is by no means the strongest team in the league, but going on the road to grab three points is always good to see. Arsenal now head into a long break, hoping and praying that their players make it back from international duty in one piece, something that is a rare occurrence. Cesc could return soon, as could Theo. We’ll see what happens over the stretch run. For now, with Villa’s 5-0 loss to Liverpool yesterday, the fear of dropping out of the top four is gone.
