Euro 2008 update: Swiss out
By: travis | June 12th, 2008
The first struggling host nation is already out. With a 2-1 loss to Turkey yesterday, the Swiss were eliminated from the tournament. This means an early exit for two Gunners involved with the Swiss NT (Senderos and Djourou), but not surprising. It’s been a tumultuous time for Philippe as he fell out of favor at Arsenal close to the end of the season, and there were even rumors of a departure during the transfer season. Djourou was once again absent from the first-team; relegated to the bench, perhaps he’ll play against Portugal, a now-meaningless match.
Back to Senderos; I uncovered a few interesting facts about him after stumbling upon this profile done on him in the Guardian. It’s a bit dated (from 2005), but he seemed like quite the impressive 20-year-old. At that point he spoke five languagues (Italian, German, Spanish, English, and French) and acted as the translator for the new players.
Senderos fills a natural role of facilitator in the team. When players arrive at Arsenal not knowing anyone or not speaking English, he often acts as mentor for them.
I wonder if he still does that. Good luck to him in the offseason. Arsenal involvement in today’s matches will be limited to the Poland match, with backup keeper Łukasz Fabiański most likely to sit on the bench. It’s a pain looking up names like those everytime I want to post them.

im pretty sure cesc and senderos are very close buddies since they came to arsenal around same time and senderos was one of the few ppl that fabregas could speak too. Senderos i think is a unpolished diamond. He makes a lot of critical errors but i’ve also seen him at times do some very good defending and his area of command around the pitch is much better then gallas or toure’s. He like all defenders will get better with age.
