Everton 1-Arsenal 6
By: Martin | August 15th, 2009I feel like I should try to say something clever here. Something pithy but a little profound to put some perspective on what just happened. But all I can come up with is–that was really, really awesome.
I suspect I’m like pretty much everyone else in that I expected this to be a really tough match–I thought a 1-1 draw was likely, and a 2-1 win would have been great for us. So I’m still a bit in shock at what happened. Simply put, we dominated from the first whistle to nearly the last whistle, when Saha scored a junk-time consolation goal. We scored 2 goals from set pieces, which has not been a strength of ours in the pass. We held possession and looked poised and composed in the final third, which was also a trouble spot. All in all, we just completely pwned a good team on their own pitch–how could you ask for a better start to the season?
However, let’s not crown this bunch the new Invincibles just yet. As impressive as it was, the bottom line is that this is just one game. We’ve got the same number of points as Chelsea, who needed an injury time wondergoal to take 3 points from Hull at home. Hopefully it’s a sign of the squad coming around, but right now we’ve just got to keep our heads down and try to keep the momentum going into the trip to Glasgow on Tuesday. And, I hate to say it because I don’t want to take the wind out of our sails and I really respect Everton as a club and Moyes as a manger, but the fact is this–Everton was really, really crap today.
As per request, here would be my player ratings:
Almunia 7. Didn’t do too much, but didn’t really have to. I don’t actually recall him making any saves of any real difficulty, but I thought he was good coming off his line to deal with Everton’s corner kicks.
Sagna 8.5. Good start from Sagna, I thought–he was getting forward into the attack and tracking back when he needed to, and several times managed to effectively deal with Fellaini on set pieces.
Clichy 7. Regular readers will know I’m pretty worried about Clichy in terms of his form since the end of the 2007-2008 season, but I thought he had a solid start. He ran around, made some good plays, but there were a couple of times when Vermaelen had to come over and cover for him.
Vermaelen 9. I spent a lot of time trying to watch the new guy, and I have to say I was very, very impressed. The goal was nice, of course, but other than that, he seemed like a solid defender with a great all-around game–he’s got enough pace to be good in recovery and play a high line effectively, but is pretty tough and decent in the air as well. If he continues to play like this, he’s a huge upgrade over Kolo.
Gallas 8.5. I don’t think Everton’s attack was requiring too much of him today, but he got back and made the plays he needed to, and got the goal on the setpiece. Solid start for our entire backline.
Denilson 8.5. I’ve defended him in the past, and I still stick by my prediction that he could come into his own this season and make Brazil’s World Cup team. The goal was on a wonderful shot, and he was running around making plays all day.
Song 8.5. I’m probably wrong about this, but I don’t think Song failed to compete a pass until the very end of the game. Solid and safe with the ball, and physical and tenacious without it, I think he was a thorn in the side of Everton’s midfield all day. As I’ve said before, I think we need another holding midfielder for cover, especially since Song will be at the ACN in January, but as far as I’m concerned, we’ve got our first-teamer in that role.
Cesc 9.5. Man of the match. 2 goals. Making passes. Pulling strings. Paying tribute to a fallen comrade. Te Amo, Cesc. Te Amo.
Bendtner 8. Didn’t light the world on fire, but was involved in the first couple of goals and looked more comfortable than I would have thought out on the right. He may prove me right about him yet.
van Persie 8. Solid performance, and great pass to nutmeg the defender and set up the fourth goal. Part of me still thinks he might be better suited to one of the forward wide roles–I think if he shifted to the left, Arshavin moved over to the right, and Bendtner moved to middle to provide a bit of an aerial threat, that might be a slightly more effective configuration. But I won’t be second guessing the gaffer after a 6-1 win.
Arshavin 7.5. Didn’t make many mistakes or bad plays, but wasn’t really the catalyst on the attack we’ve seen him be in the past, either. Hit the post on a shot to set up Eduardo’s goal.
I don’t really like rating late subs, but Ramsey looked decent, Eboue was pretty good, and it was wonderful to see Eduardo score his first league goal in some time. You can say it was an easy goal, and it was, but Eduardo is one of those guys who has the instinct to put himself in position to score a lot of “easy goals,” so it wasn’t pure luck. As he said in the video I posted this morning, “I’m back.”
Nothing more to say, really–we just started the season in the best possible fashion, hopefully we’ll be able to keep it up over the next 9 months. For now, we’ve got to prepare for a very tricky away match in Glasgow on Tuesday, which we’ll discuss in the coming days. For now, though, enjoy the victory and the rest of your weekend.

Thank you. The ratings are good. Probably that Sagna should have had less. He made a couple of lost passes sometimes. After this, I have no problem.
About David Moyes, the ma is remarkable. With a few money available, he was able to create a team challenging for the top 4, but unfortunately ends up in the fifth. He’s a Wenger-like manager in the way that he does not like to spend a lot and manage to deliver a great squad. It isn’t for nothing that Manchester United management are considering to take him aboard as the eventual successor of S.A.F. Everton were not in the mood today. Furthermore, they did not have the services of their own Fabregas: Mikel Arterta.
Martin: When I saw the line-up, I was wondering why would Wenger put Fabregas in the hole. Then, while was watching the game, I realized that his ability to maintain the ball and pass it around is very helpful to Van Persie and Arshavin. Since those two “strikers” like to pass it around too, it does not take time for them to find the hole in the defense. Bendtner would offer the aerial threat as you mentioned it. But, He would not be able to maintain the ball at his feet. Bendtner needs space to dribble , contrarily to Fabregas who can dribble through narrow situation.
Where Bendtner was, it was the ideal place for him since he was not fielded up-front. I believe the only other players that could be in the hole behind the two strikers are Wilshere and Merida.

I would like to toot my own horn about backing Thomas every day in this offside. The man is great, he has speed, he can contest high balls, plus he’s awesome in one on one situations. He also wants to be here, here’s looking at you Kolo

Martin,
Thanks for this post. I’m glad you didn’t get carried away with too much enthusiasm, but enjoyed it for what it was. I’ll still wait and see how it goes. Oh, and since I’m a gramer nird, check the typo in the last sentence of your second paragraph.I had some questions about the alignment of the forward players too. I also thought it would make more sense to have Bendtner as the one true striker, with the other two guys on the wings. I have only one thought as to why it was set up like that. Despite his finishing flaws, Bendtner has a pretty good work rate. I saw him getting back on that side and covering defensively. I have to think that’s the reason he was used in that role.
Regarding Song, I was very impressed. He looked so much better than I’ve seen him before. As far as “cover” for that position, let me throw out my ideal name, who wouldn’t cost a fortune either. How about Michael Bradley? He fits the AW description to an extent, since he’s foreign and young. Plus I’ve never had an American to root for at Arsenal.Posted from

nice work
vermaelen is our vidic
eduardo shud have been worth rating, his goal though a simple tap in showed the striker instinct he is well known for
i agree with third eye on sagna rating but still he deserve a high one cos going forward n being effective is not his best traids
cesc man of the match-cos he got u 22-44 points in fantasy-ain’t it-just joking he was excellentnow wenger shud get subotic n matuidi that would be well needed cover for two position by some high performing youngster

THIRD EYE
ALSO i think wenger meant bendtner to play at baines wing to man him up,
lets not forget last season most of everton goal n penetration started with baines overlapping
but bendtner really did a good job at keeping baines at bayPosted from

Am I one of the few who feels that Bendtner could actually be turned into a DM… Just putting it out there.

Right about Eduardo , he always makes his goals look easy and that the beauty of it, he plays arsenal-style.
Thx for the ratings.
Cesc Perfesc!
I usually dont like to say things like this specially after just one game, but it was a 6-1 win as visitors baby!! so here it is: we’re back baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!Posted from

Nobody expected this.A 6-1 win against Everton in Liverpool.I cant wait to watch the Celtic game and see if this was just luck or this could really be our season.Poor Everton, they have a really good team with some great players and a great Manager but as an Arsenal fan I am really happy.

The questione is:Will Wenger after this game buy new players?I think that after this WIN he will give Song and Denilson a chance to play in the first XI so probably it will a back up for them(Matuidi) and maybe a back up CD(?).Gigi,Thank you for the positive comment,LOL.

i’m actually nervous about the celtic game. i hope the lads don’t let this one go to their heads. remember last year we played well against the larger clubs for the most part but cocked it up against hull and other shit teams.
basically the lads can’t read their own press clippings too much. it was only one game that just happened to go perfectly.
btw eduardo’s goal was easy. it was a tap in. i would agree that he makes other difficult finishes look easy though.

I guess what I meant about Eduardo is that if you watch it, it almost seemed like he knew what was going to happen 3 seconds before it happened, because he went right to the spot where the rebound would come. I think a lot of strikers would have just peeled off the play altogether, or dropped into space for a possible pass back, or gone around to the other post. But Eduardo is one of those guys who just seems to have that instinct when plays are developing, so he scores more than his fair share of “easy finishes.”

yeah, i agree. he definitely has a magnified strikers’/poachers instinct. no doubt about it. he is also clinical on regular chances. like that one he put in off the post against rangers or atletico. i don’t remember. you can’t really explain it, he just has it. it is like pippo inzaghi except without the his usual cheating the offsides trap.
he is a beast. i hope that injury doesn’t hold him back from reaching his full potential.

i’ve gotta say Martin, i’m really pleased with this result!

—>Indeed, after Arshavin’s vein attempt he continued his race through the defenders and posted himself at right place.
—>The goal that we conceded could have been avoided if someone had decided to mark Lois Saha. I know that a black player was there, began his run, but he let it go and Saha eventually took the rebound. I presume it cannot be Gallas since he let the ball get through his legs. So, my guess would be either Sagna or EbouĂ©.
—>I know it is not important since we were winning 6-0 at the time, however, such goals could be crucial to conceded especially if we are playing Liverpool, Chelsea or Mancester United.
—>By watching the video too, I saw one of those back passes that Sagna made and let the striker cut in and intercept it. Sagna put the defense in jeopardize by allowing sch an action and could have resulted into a goal. Once again, at the time, we were wining, but don’t forget that such errors mus not be committed again. (Or, preferably, not during important games).

martin
exactly what i was saying
eduardo and even louis saha on the other end have the striker insticnt,do u guys notice how the ball simply fell in to eduardo or saha,coincidence-not at all they were expecting the ball, the minute the ball left arshavin feet, eduardo was thinking “ok he aimed for the far post, lets be there incase it doesnt go in”-its pure instinct n he was there(no other arsenal player,no defender) to tap it in for a goal, same case with saha 6-1 goalPosted from

Martin (btw thx for the video) i agree wth you, Eduardo seems to put himself at the right place at th right time, I remember sometimes saying last season that our strikers did not follow much the play, you’d see some empty spaces where the ball could be kickec in…just like Eduardo did yesterday.
But I have to say that in general I saw an overall “easy looking Arsenal”, meaning that two or three years ago, they did things like this, they played so knowing where things had to be , that it was perceived as “easy” although it is not. Sometimes during lasts eason I wondered if other teams were studying us too much and guessing right where our “easy plays” were going to be.
But after all, I just want to savour the momentum and send the guys another wish for the Celtics game!Posted from

Does anyone want to discuss the Rafael Van der Vaart rumors? I keep reading it everywhere. It’s not the position I would think we’d want to address, but at the price I’m hearing, I think it would be great.

Its just amazing to win 6-1 against Everton in Merseyside…
I hope the lads dont get cocky in the next games and keep preforming as well.

Homey: There is nothing to discuss abut since it’s totally false. I read it somewhere and I don’t think it’s a good deal. The priority goes to a holding midfielder first, a central defender second and a striker probably. This transfer would be stupid. Yes, he might help us during Rosisky’s and Nasri’s absence, but once they’ll return, he’ll become a surplus.
