Flamini out, possible replacements?
By: travis | May 1st, 2008With Flamini now supposedly off to AC Milan, it’s time to admit what has been inevitable for the last few months. Arsenal loses a player of unquestioned toughness and grit to some team in the Serie A. Best of luck to him, and I guess in the end money talks. Flamini had a great season and despite missing the last few weeks through injury, it’s hard to be anything but appreciative with the way he played the tough guy role in defensive midfield. He’ll be a tough player to replace.
Speaking of replacing, the rumors are flying all over the place. Aside from Cesc dreaming of a title miracle. New rumor of the day is that Arsenal are interested in signing former Sydney FC defender/midfielder Mark Milligan. He’s off contract with Sydney, so he’ll be a cheap gamble, and having watched him play all last season, he could pay big dividends, playing a similar role to Flamini. I know the comparison is a bit of a stretch, as the A-League is several notches below the EPL, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. Milligan helped Australia qualify for the Olympics and had a solid showing in the 2007 Asian Cup. Not a bad move, as he should come cheap.
The Daily Mail links us to Hatem Ben Arfa as well, saying that we’ll have competition from Marseille. It would fit into Wenger’s desire to bring in as many Frenchmen to the side as he possibly can.
The business side of Arsenal brings news that Managing Director Keith Edelman has “left”. Or been forced out, as other articles out there claim. Edelman helped secure things to get the Emirates built, so due credit to him. His departure may increase spending on transfer, but also the takeover of the club by some crooked, fat Russian oligarch.

I’m sorry that Flamini is leaving especially seeing that this season was one of his better ones for the club. I wish him the best. I know our beloved coach is excellent at developing talented players, but I am worried that we’re so concerned about getting cheap players that we avoid getting quality players. I don’t know this player, but I do know that the Australian league isn’t anywhere close to the EPL. I want us to win trophies this year, even if it means purchasing known winners.

Considering I am a Sydney FC follower….
IDK. I really don’t know what he’d do with Arsenal other than Carling Cup games perhaps and sitting on the bench. Because his talent isn’t really anywhere near say, Flamini’s. Adrian Leijer is at Fulham, David Carney is at Sheffield United, Ruben Zadkovich at Derby. Championship/Relegation teams. Granted he’s probably better than them, but still.
I think Arsene could do better, unless he really wants a half-decent player for bargain prices. *shrug* we’ll see how it goes.

Its absolutely ridiculous that milligan is being contemplated here
He is nowhere near the standard of a team that should be challenging to win all four trophies (perhaps minus the carling)
There is only one australian good enough to be in the top teams in england and that is Timmy Cahill
And he isnt of the position we need to fill.
