Full Respect for CSKA Moscow
By: Trent | October 31st, 2006
Arsene Wenger figures his team went into its Champions League match at CSKA Moscow a little over confident. That match, as we all know, ended 1-0 in the host’s favor. Tomorrow Arsenal gets a chance at revenge when this man and his mustache come to North London.
So the club’s confidence is now in check. But CSKA’s has only grown, according to midfielder Daniel Carvalho, who scored his team’s goal during the first mathcup. “I think Arsenal respect us more than before, and a draw would be fantastic,” said the Brazillian. “But another victory could mean a spot in the last 16. And now we know we can beat Arsenal, we are much more confident.”
This Group G battle will pit the top two teams on points, although there is plenty of time for this to get interesting. Currently, CSKA sit stop the group with seven points, with Arsenal in second at six points. Porto are third, but only two points behind Arsenal. Winless Hamburg bring up the rear.
I still look for Arsenal and CSKA to go through to the round of 16. Porto can’t yet be discounted, although I’d say this iteration of the Portuguese club is more of a Tawny than a true Vintage.
