Full Time: Liverpool 3-6 Arsenal
By: Trent | January 9th, 2007Arsenal and Liverpool have just ended quite the defensive struggle in today’s Carling Cup tie. Only nine goals on the day. The Gunners are off to the semifinals. The scorers:
Arsenal: Baptista x 4, Song, Aliadiere
Liverpool: Gerrard, Fowler, Hyypia
Here’s what Football365 had to say at the end:
“What a game…..what a game. This sounds odd, but Arsenal – a team who have just scored nine in two games against a Liverpool side who hadn’t lost in two years at home – weren’t all that great. And even more bizarrely, defence aside, Liverpool weren’t that terrible.
Baptista grabbed four goals, but in truth didn’t do much else. The real star for Arsenal was Jeremie Aliadiere, who scored one and set up three.
The plum of the night award has to be shared between Dudek – who can be blamed for three of the goals – has to go to Gabriel Paletta, who was made to look very silly indeed by Aliadiere.
Nine goals, a missed penalty and a host of other chances – all this game was missing was a massive punch-up.”

How often will you read a sentence like this: “Baptista grabbed four goals, but in truth didn’t do much else.”
Made me giggle. Most teams would be thrilled to take four goals but not much else!

Interesting how the pundits are always unwilling to give Arsenal enuf credit when they’re victorious. There’s always a qualification, always an excuse.
