What a dramatic game it was! It was the home team who drew the first blood by coming close to scoring early on; Lehmann was bested and Bobby Zamora just missed the far post. Van Persie then replied with a volley, forcing Robert Green to stretch to keep the ball out.
The Gunners kept falling foul to the same problems over and over again; they failed to take good chances and convert them to goal. On one occasion, Rosicky just blasted the ball wide, whereas he should at least have worked the keeper. The Hammers on the other hand gave the Gunners one or two scares at the other end of the field.
Lehmann almost committed a grave mistake by kicking the ball straight to a West Ham player, but luckily for the German number 1, Bennayoun headed the ball wide. Problems then began to rise when Van Persie was struck by a coin on his head by the home fans. How cheap can these fans get?
Teddy Sheringham at the age of 40 is still considered a very valuable asset to Alan Pardew’s team. Pardew was absolutely spot-on with his substitutions today. Sheringham made a big impact to the team upon coming on the pitch, creating never-ending problems for the Gunners defence. He was also the one who assisted in West Ham’s goal along with Etherington.
Prior to West Ham’s goal, Mullins had a chance to score earlier but Lehmann did just enough to keep Arsenal alive, but even he could do nothing about Harewood’s goal, which caused Uptown Park to roar into life.
Now, let’s discuss the challenge by Spector on Hleb. For me, that was clearly a PENALTY! No doubt about that. I am not being biased here, but the referee got it horribly wrong. Replays showed that Spector’s challenge was clumsy, and he was very fortunate to get away without conceding a penalty, as well as remaining unbooked. This decision will make the blood of Arsenal fans boil.
To add more to the drama, both managers were almost lashing out at each other and had to be separated. Arsene Wenger for the first time in history was seen this animated on TV, and he even refused a handshake with Pardew after the game.
An entertaining game by both teams and Arsenal deserved at least a draw.
