Good news: Van Persie plays, doesn’t get injured
By: travis | June 9th, 2008It was a big night in Switzerland yesterday, as the “Group of Death” kicked off with France playing Romania and Italy taking on the Dutch. Our sulky captain William Gallas went the distance for the French as his side sputtered to a 0-0 draw in what had to be one of the dullest games I have ever seen. The sight of Nicholas Anelka as a lone striker scuffing up and down the field, missing a wide open header and generally looking lost really made you question why David Trezeguet was not selected. Of note, Samir Nasri played around 20-25 minutes, replacing Anelka. He managed very little, although no reason to place the blame on him.
In the second game, the Netherlands 3-0 thrashing of Italy, the always-injured Van Persie made a brief, 20 minute appearance. Fingers crossed nothing bad happens to him at this tournament, and it’d be a real bonus if he could come back to London unscathed. Not going to bet on it though. I didn’t bother to stay up watching this one, as the 4:45 am kickoff time didn’t appeal. It’s unclear as to how much Robin will featuer in this tournament, especially if the Dutch keep grabbing results like this one.
Today’s match features Cesc hopefully starting for Spain. I’ll be up and watching, cheering on the perennial underachievers.
