Happy Fourth of July — Felipe Melo to Arsenal?

By: travis | July 4th, 2009

To all of our USA audience, a happy fourth of July to each and every one of you. For those inhabiting other countries, have a holiday in honor of the good ol’ US of A. Even with the hustle and bustle of the holiday, there’s time to talk some Arsenal.

There’s something of a story brewing with the Viola — namely a rumored move of Felipe Melo to Arsenal, brought up by some in the previous post. Many out there considered this rumor dead and buried when Melo re-signed with Fiorentina, but perhaps this signals the club was out to either secure his services for another year or make as much coin as they possibly could on a transfer.

While there is plenty of reason to doubt the latest report, it’s about as official as it gets, with Fiorentina reporting on their website that the only club to have neared an agreement for the Brazilian midfielder is our beloved North London club. The only hold-up point is the rumored €25 million buy-out clause in Melo’s contract. Adding further intrigue to the situation is the request of Fiorentina to add Emmanuel Eboue as part of the switch. That’s a pretty steep price to pay up front to also throw in a player, but wouldn’t it make sense? Eboue has talked this summer about wanting to move on, and this could be the right opportunity for him and for Arsenal.

Insert usual chatter about Arsenal’s lack of bite in midfield here.

Yes, while this is just a rumor and, as is typical, will very likely never happen, it’s worth bringing up because it shows that Wenger is out there, attempting to make some moves and bolster the squad. It isn’t out of the question to imagine this club, with the right additions, making a strong title challenge.

Anyone out there think this will actually happen? Or is it just more transfer nonsense? Join the conversation below. It could be a big move.

As I posted in the other thread, it would be great news on two fronts. Getting rid of Eboue being the second.

—>Melo joining Arsenal is likely to happen if the gossips about Juventus wanting him are false.

—>If they are true, then it isn’t impossible for Arsenal to get their hand on him, but,it’s going to be way more difficult.

—>From my perspective, Melo is a great addition to the team. Not only that he’ll bring experience to the team (the guy already played i the champions league no?), but hell give competition for the like of Diaby, Denilson and Song.

—>Furthermore, Melo can shield the center midfield. Hence, it will give Fabregas more opportunity to pass accurately his so famous through balls. Then, Melo possesses other tricks on his sleeves: His vision. Added to Fabregas ability to pass, they’re going to give some serious headaches to the rival teams.

—>I hope that he’ll fit in perfectly just like Arshevin did. I’m not too worry about this point. Melo did play with Brazil during the Confederation Cup which might be a great hint to evaluate his potential. If he can play their pace, he can certainly do it at Arsenal.

It’s a link showing you guys about his overall skills. His lob passes, tackling and game play vision are Fabresque! Not to mention that he keeps well possession of the ball and likes to maximize opportunities from nothing. He’s resembles a lot like Fabregas.

whats wrong with you citeh, man city wont even challenge for spot 6 in the premier league, everton and aston villa are far more stronger than your team with these new signings.

I just hope we get a defensive midfielder whoever it is, melo, cana, inler and we will win big time next season
