Hate To Say It, But…

…is this Copa America sucking?
In the interest of full disclosure, the two teams I root for in the Copa America, Ecuador and the USA, were the worst two teams in the group stages. So maybe that’s coloring my take at the moment. But let’s take a look at the quarterfinal matches.
Uruguay 4-1 Venezuela
Brazil 6-1 Chile
Mexico 6 - 0 Paraguay
Argentina 4 - 0 Peru
Hmm. 20-2. That just isn’t good football folks.
I haven’t seen every match, to be sure, but what I’ve seen has been incredibly boring. Am I missing something? What do you guys and gals think of the Copa this year?

Trent I believe this Copa is just showing the difference of class between the haves and the have nots. I am sure the Semi’s are going to be great matches but there was some solid play in the early rounds. I thought the US had a good showing against Argentina but the loss demoralized them. It is crappy as US Soccer fan to see them bring a b team to a big tournament that could have shown what they can do. Thanks for giving a place to comment on the Copa which showcases many of Europe’s talented players.

Ditto to what Gianfranco said, but I’d also like to add that the Mexico-Paraguay score was mainly due to the 10 men vs 11 for 87 minutes. I still think Mexico would have won but it would have been more like 2-1. Some group stage matches were good as well: Chile vs Ecuador, Argentina vs Paraguay, & Argentina vs Colombia come to mind. The Semis and Final should be great matches.

The Mexico-Argentina semifinal has potential to be an incredible game. I wouldn’t give up on this Copa yet. Brazil-Paraguay was a very good match to watch, and there’s been a great story with guest Mexico doing very well, even though the US wasn’t up to the task. I don’t think it’s been the best Copa ever, but there’ll be some good memories of it.

So a low scoring international tournament is bad. But a high scoring international tournament is bad as well. Difficult balance.

Yeah! Thanks for opening up a spot for Copa America Trent! I think you make a good point that all of the quarter final matches were landslides, but I have enjoyed this Cup immensely. Mexico has been turning heads with Nery Castillo carrying the torch, Argentina have one of the most exciting teams in recent memory, we get to see the new Brazil squad developing into what will be a huge threat in the next World Cup: and, of course, there’s been some wonderful football.
I personally found the Brazil v. Mexico match a great way to set the stage, and though most of Argentina’s games have been break-aways (they’ve scored 4 goals in all but one fixture, against Paraguay) the goals usually come late, and it’s fascinating watching them pick away at their opponents looking for defensive holes and slip-ups. Their match against the U.S. was actually a nail-biter until Argentina scored their second goal. And the Ecuador v. Chile match was an unforgetable come-back, if you ask me.
Anyhow, the Argentina Mexico should be AWESOME and I for one give this Copa America two thumbs up.

Trent, are you kidding??? The football on offer at the Copa has been by far more entertaining than most games at the wc last summer or Euro 04. Not every game has been great but there’ve been some terrific matches. Argentina and Mexico, esp. I just couldn’t disagree with you more. I’m a Brazilian who’s been very disheartened by the lackluster football Dunga has provided this tournament—I hope Argentina slaughter Brazil on Sunday because Brazilian football needs a good kick in the teeth. I’ve also been watching the U20 world cup and while the Brazil squad has been better to watch in comparison with their adult counterparts, they still were nothing to write home about. They’ve been eliminated by a strong Spanish squad and the USA beat them in a terrific match that should make all US supporters very hopeful for the future of their NT.
