Hurry Up and Wait
By: Abby | May 28th, 2008Is what I’m doing. Continuing to twiddle my thumbs over the Nasri possibility- which, with recent quotes, is looking a bit more likely, as much as I’m loath to say much and jinx things. Maybe it’ll be confirmed tomorrow, when I take off for a weekend business trip to Las Vegas. (There are worse places to go on business.) Or maybe it won’t.
The transfer saga of the man Nasri may or may not be replacing, depending on if he does or does not sign, Alexander Hleb, has turned into even more of a farce. It was already pretty farcical, to the point where I’m more amused than angry. Now, after lots of quotes to the contrary from multiple agents, the man himself says that no, he doesn’t want to leave.
Er.
So that’s three different agents involved (Morabito, Nikolai Shpilevski, Uli Ferber, and I can’t figure out which one is actually his real agent), three rival “big” clubs (Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan), one ice-cream, one complaining about how big and scary London is, and a denial that he wants to quit. I don’t think I could write a transfer deal more silly. It’s almost magnificent in its stupidity.
And I’ve got to touch on the Christiano Ronaldo to Madrid rumors. Not just to smirk at Man U (although that’s what Arsenal fans do often), but mostly because it makes me, and hopefully some Arsenal fans out in the wide and varied world of Arsenal blogs, feel a little better. The disappearance of Flamini and the soon-to-be departure of Hleb has made us a little insecure about our place in football. Our players, it seemed, were always leaving, while other teams never had this kind of speculation about theirs. All this talk about Cronaldo has proved that no, we’re not that special. Even the champions have other clubs coming in to poach their stars.

I totally I agree with you Abby. I think this whole mess of Hleb leaving was nothing but stupidity on the part of Hleb and his agent(s). If I remember correctly Hleb said he didn’t like the hustle and bustle of the city, and cited that as his reason for wanting to leave. Lately I haven’t seen Inter or Barca making a big deal about him anymore. So what changed? Beats me. But he can leave if he wants to in my opinion. We are 99% close to signing Nasri, and I think he’s going to have a huge impact. Furthermore, we don’t want a situation similar to Dinho on our hands, so someone please take Hleb off of our hands.
