Kolo Toure Out to City?

By: travis | July 28th, 2009

Could Arsene Wenger really sell another player to the Eastlands? News this morning is rampant that Kolo Toure is on his way out to City for a tidy sum of £15 million. While other outlets are reporting this as a done deal, we’ll have to wait and see what the clubs say.

One of the strongest reasons to believe in the validity of the rumor is that neither Toure nor the club has come out to deny the possible sale of the Ivorian to City. Wenger’s remarks to Arsenal TV were as such

“We have many centerbacks, seven centerbacks and I’m in a position where we have to play some in midfield… but of course Kolo is a very good player – we’ll see what happens in the next 24 hours.”

There is truth to his claim of having a number of centerbacks, further evidenced by the play of Senderos in the midfield to get him minutes on the pitch. And Toure, while a solid player for this club, appears to be on the down side of things. His spat with Gallas last year made you think that one or the other could be headed out of town.

The glaring concern here is the fact Arsenal is strengthening City. And when they could be a challenger for one of the top four spots, it makes you stop and think as to the wisdom of a decision like this — especially if Wenger goes forward without buying a proven midfielder.

We’ll see how this one plays out. Stay tuned, and leave your thoughts below.

I do believe these rumours. I think and hope our manager has something up his sleeves. I think we should have considered buying a few of Real Madrid’s fallen. It’s not that they’re not good players, because they are, they didn’t fit Reals system. Huntelaar would have been ideal. Though he was tossed out at Real, he did score do pretty well for goals in the matches he played. The 15mil for Toure will give us a total of 40mil. We can do a great deal of quality shopping with that. We can nab a forward, maybe get Huntelaar for 15, and buy a central holding midfielder and another midfielder. I know Wenger knows what he’s doing. He is making way for younger and better players. We tend to forget that our manager tends to act off his foresight for the future.

-about friendlies and can you read anything? the answer, in a word, is no. last year i thought aaron ramsey was going to be a super stud. didn’t exactly turn out that way when all he did in epl games was pass the ball backwards to our back 4

-about Niko B: he will be a decent player for you he is hungrier than Ade and probably a better header of the ball too. he just lacks top end pace but oh well

-about Kolo: this can be nothing but bad. why on earth would arsene keep Silvestre and Senderos and get rid of a player that is actually capable and has been such a loyal servant of the club? only legit reason for kolo to go is that he doesn’t want to be there anymore and he is a distraction for the team. you cannot sell good players to you direct rivals. its moronic. i was hoping his last season was an aberration but maybe arsene thinks differently

-senderos is way too slow to play in midfield. it is hilarious arsene even tried it. would he just buy a proper dm already so this charade of people playing out of position could end?

well you cant say that toure is loyal, a transfer request is not loyalty, dont get me wrong I really love his way of defending and I think he is our best defender, but I cant say that he is loyal

nah Gooner, De Rossi aint going nowhere, he’s the heir to the Roma Captaincy. plus he’s a Rome native.

you have as much of a chance of getting him now as Fabregas is to going to Barcelona.

For what it’s worth, and I obviously have no inside information on this, I’ve read elsewhere that Kolo is just kind of a quiet guy, and not really the ra-ra kind of leader that usually gets picked for the captaincy, and that’s the main reason Gallas and then Cesc got the armband over him. But I don’t know, he always seems to be talking to his teammates on the field, so maybe that’s all b.s.

Toure would be a loss in my opinion, even with the transfer he requested, which is not loyalty for sure. Maybe he doesn’t want to play for Arsenal, in such case it’s better to sell him than to spend a year like Ade did. Hopefully is all BS and he’ll stay. Man we need defence this season…

hahahhahaha! wenger is actually smart! if he sells toure! he would have a total of 25+15 mil to spend on a midfielder! with so much depth in the center back and the amount of money he is making, he would just be stupid enough not to sell him! these two transfers have achieved 2 things! 1 – get the trash out of the Emirates which is (toure and ada both trouble makers) and 2nd get money to buy a well experianced midfielder! Isnt that what we have been lacking?

Realfootball, I wouldn’t call Toure trash. He was often our most consistent defender. Many times, when we needed a late goal he would show up. I did like Ade too, but he never had Arsenal in his heart. The 40mil we will get from this will enable us to buy not only a DM but maybe a couple of defenders too. We can certainly get a very good DM in the range of 12-15mil easily, but we need to spend quickly. I have read that the Arsenal boardrooms is divided. Board members have different vision for the club and have conflicting ideas on how to manage our debt. The bottom line is that there is no money available for transfers outside of selling players. It sucks but thats just the reality of the situation. Like it or love it, we’ll be fielding one of the most inexperienced, depleted, young, unproven squads this season.

I am a fan of almost every player and defend most of them, try to get the good side out of all of them. But Eboue looked really awful this season (at least the games I saw), so I would not call the exit of Eboue a fallinto 5th place. I think more important (objectivelly) were the Ade and possible Kolo exits, and still, we can fight for the title

Martin O’Neill now saying City are full-fledged title challengers.

When I began watching soccer seriously two years ago and began supporting Arsenal, I had no idea it was a club on the decline, but perhaps it is.

Makes it more interesting, doesn’t it?
