Liveblog 3000! Many Brentons in Swansea edition

By: Brenton | January 15th, 2012

It’s true, there are a lot of Brentons in Swansea. Third most dense concentration of Brentons in the UK after southwest England (Plymouth) and Southampton. Fascinating stuff, this.

Read Martin’s preview because you should and because he paints a bleak picture of our backline, a picture we all need to come to terms with.

Then watch this and marvel at this: Wenger beat Swansea 2-1 20 years ago as manager of Monaco on their run to the European Cup Winners Cup Final in 1992. His team included Lilian Thuram, Emmanuel Petit, Youri Djorkeaff and George Weah.

Then look at this:

Will we see these two playing together today?

Will we see these two playing together today?

and dream.

Kick-off is at 4pm UK, 11 Eastern, 8am Pacific, and 9pm in Islamabad. We’ll be here a half-hour early to talk line-up and the value of an accurate census.

We currently have a squad with 30 players on the sheet according to wikipedia. Underperformers: Almunia, Rosicky, Arshavin, Squillacci, (hate to say it, but Walcott and Ramsey), Chamakh. That leaves 23 players. Long term injury list: Wilshere, Diaby, Sagna, Santos, Gibbs, Jenkinson. That leaves 17 players. Non entities: Miyaichi,  Park, Miquel . That leaves 14 players. Overall consistent: Wojo, Kos, Verm, Arteta, Gerv, Song, Mert, Ox, Djourou, Coq, RVP. We dont even have a consistent group of 11 players to do well not to mention a bench and Wenger wants to abolish the Jan transfer window, what the fuck is he smoking.

  • Arsene Wanger

I smoke PCP, crack, hash and sometimes mix those with peyote. I'm not too smart. Obviously.

  • Homey_Mills

I'm in the minority on this one, but I'm still a big Ramsey fan.  He just turned 21, and he's been forced to play basically every match this year due to various other injuries.  I still like his commitment and such, and I think he'll get a lot better.  If Wilshere had been around, Ramsey would have played about half as much, and we wouldn't be dogging him like this and expecting so much.
But yeah, there's not enough overall depth and quality, as I've been saying in this space for a long, long time.

  • What people are forgetting about our "stellar Jack" is that when he played so much last year, he was replacing Denilson in the team. He played well, but it's not like he racked up the goals/assists. Ramsey has been brought in to directly replace Cesc. If you look at his stats, he's actually done a lot better than Jack last year, but of course he's not going to be as good as Cesc right now.

  • Kas123

Embarrassing, embarrassing. Swansea hasn't beaten us in over 3 decades until today.  It seems that this season is the one of negative records for us. 8-2 drubbing, cant beat relegation battling teams, can't create goals or chances. To be honest, I dont even recognize our style of football anymore because this isn't Arsenal football, it feels like patch work. I hope we dont miss out on the CL league this year, because I suspect the 50+ mil we have in the transfer kitty will be use to offset the loss of CL money. Unfortunately for us this feels like a project gone wrong. To lose 7 out of 21 games in Jan is a catastrophy. Wenger leaving is not the answer, motivating the dressing room and developing a positive, winning attitude is what is needed.

  • Homey_Mills

But who's responsible for motivating the dressing room?  Who's responsible for spending the massive transfer kitty?  And who's not doing it?  I don't see how we can go on and on blaming Wenger for these things, and then stopping short of calling for a change of managers.
Look, I understand the man is an Arsenal legend.  So let's build another statute to honor him, buy him a gold watch, and move on already.  I don't even hear any decent rumors of transfers anymore.  It's pretty disheartening.

  • Kas123

Yeah, this really pulls at the heart strings. Liverpool should have been used as an example to show that once a good teams falls from grace, its damn near impossible to regain that stature. I dont think Wenger should leave and to disappoint you Homey, he'll be here for more years to come. What we need for him to do is to take his head out of his ass, leave the nostalgia shit in the past where it belongs, and perform like the exceptional manager we know him to be. It appears that the game have evolved and Wenger has failed to evolve with it, and thats unfortunate because you can't teach an old dog new tricks if he doesn't wanna learn.  In addition, unfortunately for us, we have a false sense of entitlement that we are guaranteed the CL football every year no matter how poor we perform. The reality is, we dont even look like a Europa team.

  • Fandum

Fergie and Manshittycini are the Europa league teams now. We're still in CL this year. Winning it will get us in next year. Right? Yea, right. We can beat Barca, Real and Bayern. They're shit. Wenger will be lucky to make Europa league this year. Trophies? I remember those. It's only been 7 short years. Well 8 including this one. 10 soon. 15 and then goodbye to Arseman. French managers are shit these days. What did you expect? A miracle? Go to church.

  • Homey_Mills

Yes, I know that he's here for probably a few years to come.  And he'll probably leave on his time.
But I think you hit on the point about the game evolving.  The fact of the matter is that there's a LOT more money needed to build a team than even five or ten years ago.  There shouldn't be a de facto cap on transfer dealings when we've been told a million times by everyone involved that there's a lot of money to spend.

  • Patoux21

Spending big would also suggest that Wenger philsophy isnt working and I am afraid he is too stubborn and proud to admit it and would rather fail with his ideas

  • Kas123

    Damn Skippy.

  • Patoux21

To add up to Wenger's referee conspiracy there was never penalty and the pile of bad decisions is worrying but it's no excuse for a humiliating performance

  • Bumblefock

didn't ramsey clip swansea guy's by achiles?

  • Will

Replays showed that Ramsey was actually kicked in the shin by Dyer, who proceded to fall over. Patoux is right though, the performance was humiliating regardless.

  • Patoux21

Humiliation is happening too often in the last few years and Arsenal fans are getting tired of being mocked by others especially when Wenger, the board or whoever are in charge are far from making the necessary decisions to be successful (and Wenger stop moaning and being a cry baby I've read him complaning about the PL calendar recently not being fair)

  • Patoux21

Dyer stepped on Ramsey's leg and therefore lost his balance so it was actually a foul from Swansea but the referee couldnt see because his view was obstructed by Ramsey's back

  • Gigi

It was nice to see Arsenal as a great club while it lasted. News to Stan: the local base of fans WON'T get any profit into the club, big players won't be excited to come. Wenger will be hired by a buig club. The only way to salvage us: spend big and get the UCL.

Woof. We need a major review of this squad before time runs out. I don't care that 2-3-whatever defenders will be returning tomorrow, a new fullback is a MUST. Djourou is not a fullback, Miquel sure as hell is not a fullback. Djourou needs to return to the center and provide competition for Mert, who has been average recently.
Wojo has been poor at the back, and perhaps could use with some friendly competition to keep him on his toes. Almunia, Fabianski, and Mannone aren't cut out for it, and need to be shipped out. I have a hunch Damian Martinez, who is held in high regard, will make the jump to be the #2.
We missed Arteta today, no doubt. Ramsey was very, very poor. We don't know when Wilshere will return, and at what level he will be when he gets back. Perhaps a new CM? This is the position where I actually don't really worry about too much. I think Ramsey needs a kick up his backside, and told to change his game a bit- it's ok to go Denilson once in a while. Then again, Rosicky is a poor game-changing backup, but I digress.
Up front, Arshavin leaves this summer. Chamakh does as well. Gervinho is a work in progress. Ox needs more playing time. Henry leaves this February. And we don't know what will happen with RvP and Theo, but it's possible both could leave this summer. Park, of course, is a ghost. A new striker, perhaps? A classic, strong CF who can get a goal out of nowhere- perfect for games like today's. Demba Ba would be perfect- now, are we willing to splash the cash?

The Homey Train is now accepting additional passengers.

  • Homey Train Back

Homey we desperately need you back. Cheapskate Wenger OUT. He won't spend anywhere near what we need to improve this squad. We need a freight train to offload the shite and hold all of us passengers. Mert had the flu? He may as well have cerebral palsy. Walcott was absolute crap for 93 minutes and 50 seconds. He has to go. Ramsey has turned to shite too in front of our eyes. Gives away a cheap PK and then loses his man. Arshavin is lost. When has it ever been good enough for the Arsenal to be outplayed and out hustled for 90 minutes by a promoted side? NO HEART, NO FIRE, NO PULSE. Wenger can't even find a coat that fits him. He was a homeless man today and it showed. Just flaps his arms like Flaps, like a damn penguin.

  • I've got a new chant for Arsenal. It's to Jay-Z's My President is Black. It goes "My Arsenal is shit" that's all I have so far...

  • The Real Doctor

Wolves, embarrassed by Fulham and now destroyed by Swansea. Take Shava, Walcott, Chamakh and Wenger and ship them all to facking Siberia. Wait till we lose RvP and shit out of CL. We need a real doctor. You are correct!! We are shite, we are shite, we are facking shite. Wenger OUT!

  • So what type of doctor are you? PhD, MD, JD, DDS, DMD...?

  • Bumblefock

    ADD

  • The Real Doctor

A Haitian Witch Doctor that will soon start putting the pins into the Wenger Doll. It could only improve his managing. Maybe he'll buy Hazard or Goetze. Right. Maybe he'll buy some shite from the Frech league. I'm going with the second. No money, No guts, no balls, tired of getting shited on. The Arsenal has lost it's reputation. Even the bottom teams enjoy playing us.

  • Moderately credible report that Arteta is out of the squad today through injury, but that Mertesacker is over his illness and included.
