Liverpool (Carling Cup) Open Thread

By: Martin | October 28th, 2009

Lineups are in:

Arsenal: Starters: Fabianski, Gibbs, Silvestre, Senderos, Gilbert, Eastmond, Nasri, Ramsey, Merida, Eduardo, Bendtner. Subs: Szczesny (Gesundheit!), Bartley, Coquelin, Frimpong, Randall, Sunu, Watt.

Liverpool: Starters: Cavalieri, Degen, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Insua, Kuyt, Spearing, Plessis, Babel, Voronin, Ngog. Subs: Reina, Aquilani, Benayoun, Darby, Dossena, Eccleston, Ayala.

No Vela. Not sure what’s going on there, as I wasn’t aware of any injuries. Strange.

My first thought on looking at the lineups are that there’s a lot of firepower out there. Bendtner and Eduardo have both shown their goal-scoring quality in the past, and will be driven to put in a good performance to try to stake their places in the first-choice eleven. Nasri, Ramsey, and Merida are all skilled players capable of popping up and scoring a goal for midfield, and will all be motivated. On the other side, Liverpool starts four players who have played forward/striker at some point in their careers: Kuyt, Ngog, Voronin, and Babel. Plus, they have two very skilled players they can bring in from the bench in Aquilani and Yossi. Add in the fact that they’ll be shooting on inexperienced backlines with little experience playing together and two keepers who haven’t seen much game action in a while, and don’t be surprised if the match is an end to end affair. Of course, since my predictions are pretty much always crap, that probably means it will end in a 0-0 draw.

Also notable is Craig Eastmond’s first start for the senior side. He’s an academy product who featured prominently for the U-18 side that won the FA Youth Cup and the Academy League last season. Congratulations to Craig.

That’s it, then–I won’t be able to watch the game so I won’t do a full recap or player ratings, but I will be following it online as best I can and will probably drop a few things in the comments section. If you’re bored at work as well, please feel free to do the same.

Come on Arsenal.

I know he’s a decent guy and all, but I still don’t like seeing Silvestre wearing the captain’s armband. I would have rather have seen Eduardo, Nasri, Ramsey, or Senderos leading the side out.

1-0, Arsenal. Goal for Fran Merida. Good thing Wenger kept him instead of sending him on loan, eh? My stream went dead, but from the live commentary I’m following Arsenal are dictating play. Maybe the youngsters learned something from the AZ match, unlike the senior team, and will really push this advantage and try to grab another goal or two before the break.

Nice first touch there in the box by Voronin, that trampoline boot works a charm.

Goal Liverpool. Well, so much for lessons learned. No word on whether or not Insua is wearing trampoline boots like Voronin, but apparently he just scored a wonder goal from outside the box. 1-1.

Haha, well put. Watching it on ESPN360 (thank you AT&T), it was a great hit on the half volley. Merida’s was no tap-in, either.

All tied up at the half. Sounds like an exciting game, and should be a fun second half.

2-1 Arsenal. St. Nick does his thing, as I’ve been waiting for him to do all season. Hopefully we can hold onto this lead, and hopefully Bendtner can take momentum from this (he has now scored in his last 2 appearances) into the fall and winter fixtures.

Good finish there by Bendtner, but less than quality defending by Skrtel and Kyrgiakos.

    Ed–

that is probably the first time the words “Bendtner” and “good finish” have ever appeared in the same sentence–cheers for that!

And Aquilani and Yossi on for Liverpool, so they are armed and fully operational for the last 15 minutes or so of the match.

Final whistle. 2-1 Arsenal, and Gunners go through to the quarterfinals. Sounds like it was an entertaining match, and first-team or no, it’s still a nice accomplishment for our kids to take the pitch against Liverpool and come away victorious.
