Manchester United 2-Arsenal 1
By: Martin | August 29th, 2009Well…I don’t know. I apologize for the delay between the end of the game and this post, but if I had posted my thoughts immediately after the end of the match, the Catholic church would have had legitimate grounds for excommunicating me. So I tried to wait a few hours to cool off before writing anything.
First off, the officiating wasn’t great, but I’m not a big fan of blaming officiating for the outcome of matches. Rooney’s penalty honestly could have gone either way–Almunia made significant contact with Rooney’s legs without getting any of the ball, but on the other hand, Rooney appeared to chip the ball away before there was any contact, so he wouldn’t have been able to catch up to the ball anyway. It wasn’t as obvious a penalty, as, say, I don’t know, Arshavin getting his legs taken out from under him in the box with no contact whatsoever with the ball, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it was a bad call. Likewise, no matter how disappointing it was, the offsides call at the end of the game was correct–Gallas was certainly offside on the play.
The fact is that we were probably the better team on the day, but we lost. It happens, and we need to move on from it. But hopefully Wenger will stress to the team that despite losing, we went on the road to the defending Premiership champions and took the game to them–on a different day, the result could have been completely different. Here’s hoping this will be an event that the players and supporters alike can rally around for the rest of the season.
Andrei Arshavin opened his account on the season with a goal that was nothing short of spectacular. And it was karmic justice, too, since he had just a few minutes earlier been denied a clear and obvious penalty. We went into half-time leading 1-0, but we gave up the lead not long after half-time after Almunia came out and clumsily made contact with Rooney’s legs on a 50-50 ball.
Then, well…I’m not sure what to say. Diaby scored an own goal under no pressure whatsoever. Anyone who reads this site with any regularity know that I am not a Diaby fan, to put it mildly–I think he’s not a player of “Arsenal quality,” and his work rate is often suspect. His two biggest problems have always been: (1) poor decisions and (2) laziness. Number (1) once again reared its ugly head today–I have no idea how that happened, as all he needed to do was head the ball forward and clear, or at least head it to the side for a corner kick. But in his defense, I will say that number (2) was NOT a problem for Diaby today–especially after he gave up the goal, he was running around and playing hard. I’m really unhappy with this result, and Diaby seems like an okay guy, so I don’t want to run him into the ground after such a devastating result, and I DON’T want to say I told you so, but he makes this kind of mistake; he’s always made these kinds of mistakes, and I think he’ll continue to do so no matter how hard he works in the offseason.
And there it was. A 2-1 loss in a game where we should have come away with at least one point. Sigh. But that’s in the past. What’s coming up? The international break, obviously, will keep us out of action until weekend after next. Hopefully Wenger can keep the squad focused on the fact that we outplayed United at Old Trafford, and we’re still legitimate title contenders. The team has been impressive so far in dominating several opponents, but to be a champion you must have the ability to overcome adversity. This is the first adversity Arsenal has faced this season, so we’ll have a chance to see what the club is made of.
On to the ratings:
Almunia 7.5. Neither of the goals were really his fault, although he misjudged the ball on Rooney’s penalty. And every other time he was called into action, be it making a save on a shot or coming out strong on a set piece, he made exactly the right move. Name 6 other keepers in the world you’d rather have in goal. I’m still waiting.
Sagna 7. Another solid performance–did his job well down the left wing and used his skill and athleticism well in defense.
Clichy 7.5. Definitely rounding into form–good performance by Gael today, he’s certainly looking to reclaim his throne as one of the world’s top left-backs.
Vermaelen 8. He’s played 5 competitive matches for us, so I hate to go too hyperbolic too soon. But he looked absolutely comfortable dealing with one of the best attacks in the world, and at some point I do think we’re going to have to say that we have a world class center-back on our squad.
Gallas 8. Ever since being stripped/”relieved” of the captaincy, Gallas has been superb. He kept it up today with a strong performance.
Denilson 6.5. Pretty anonymous. It is, of course, tough against a team like United, but he’s got to find a way to involve himself in the action more .
Song 7. Picked up a yellow early, which may have made him sheepish, but if Arsenal are going to contend for trophies this season, we need stronger performances from him in the holding role.
Diaby 5. Generally not too bad, and I was encouraged by the way he bounced back from the own-goal. On the other hand, though, how good a game can you have had when you flat out gift one of the best squads in the world a goal? Inexcusable.
Eboue 7.5 I thought he continued his recent run of good form, although his finishing was crap.
van Persie 6. Wasn’t really making plays, and could have done better with the chances he was given. Has got to improve if we’re going to succeed this season.
Arshavin 8.5. Man of the match. Drew a penalty which wasn’t given, and then scored a spectacular goal. If he continues to play like this we have a chance at winning every competition we play in.
Ramsey 7. Didn’t shrink from the moment, which is remarkable considering his age and experience. But didn’t make anything happen, either.
Eduardo 5.5. Did all the media exposure get to him? Because he looked overwhelmed and devoid of inspiration today.
Bendtner 6.5. High energy, and was inches away from a brilliant cross in the box to Eduardo.
It’s easy to be negative at this point, and deep down, I’m pretty upset–I’m going to see “Hair” on Broadway tonight, and I’m hoping all that hippy “peace and love” message salves the wound a little bit. But since we won’t play for a couple of weeks, let’s try to be positive. The bottom line is this–we outplayed Manchester United at Old Trafford, and were a couple of mental mistakes away from beating the defending champions in their own stadium. We showed the class and skill to play with any team in the world, and if we continue to improve, we can beat absolutely beat anyone, anywhere, anytime. For a team that many pundits had predicted to finish 5th at the outset of the season, that isn’t bad. I predicted it at the outset that we would win the league, and I’m sticking by this–here’s hoping we can take confidence from the performance, if not the result, and build on this.

Whooaaa, Martin. I’m loving that you’re rating players, but I really, really disagree. Sorry.
-Clichy was probably the weakest part of the defensive line. He made some good recoveries and didn’t get caught often out of position (so defensively he did okay), but on the ball, except for one excellent cross that Eboue should’ve known that he was the striker on, he did very little. In fact, I think he was exposed a bit. Last season he looked good…because the team as a whole looked bad. It won’t happen again. Otherwise, I agree with Almunia/defense, particularly Gallas, who was hands down man of the match for me.
-Diaby, well, five with an asterisk. I understand, the game would’ve been ours without the OG. But he left it ALL out on the field today. You were right, the laziness was not there. That’s not what I disagree with, though. Denilson deserved a much higher score. Diaby, Eboue, and Song were more noticeable in the midfield I suppose, but that’s just because they held the ball for too damn long. Denilson was the only one that was passing with real verve and moving ahead for the next part. He made that midfield work. He didn’t get the most appearances last season for nothing.
-Our new system is causing our forwards problems…I’ll get to that. If anyone was anonymous, it was RvP. I love van Persie. He gets the ball, and I can relax, because he’ll keep the move going. But how few and far-between were they? By his standards, he was invisible. His moments, it must be said however, were breathtaking. I really wish he scored (of course). Twice.
Arshavin could not have been man of the match, because he did so little. He had, perhaps, four moments. The first, he was unlucky not to poach that goal from the corner. The second he had no right to take an unnecessary extra touch and allow a tackle to take away the goal (penalty, yes, though). The third, awesome goal. Fourth, announcers were saying he was man of the match, and I was baffled, because all he had were those moments. Otherwise, nothing. Kind of like the bad running back playing around the world’s best offensive line. Okay, I give him credit, because it was a hell of a goal, but I think he was about as good as RvP today, meaning he couldn’t find his way into the game until he had the ball, those few, few times. I’ve said it, you’ve said it, Martin; our forwards appear to have such little joy in the 4-6/4-3-3.Now, I like the 4-6/4-3-3. Our defense is far improved. But our forwards are sincerely struggling, and it needs to be addressed. It’s almost scary that we’re a better team when we have tactics like this. I can’t be sure because I’m not that much of a student-of-the-game, but I see far too much improvisation. There’s no “engine” to Arsenal right now, it’s just extremely well-groomed players doing their thing. Hence, we saw too much ball-hogging, a bit too much indecisiveness, a ton of pressing, but thoroughbreds getting subbed off in the 80th minute because they’ve run their hearts out (ahem). It’s amazing that we played so well offensively, really, I doubt we’ll see such great individual performances from everyone too much more. How we’re playing now, it’s not sustainable.
Anyway Martin, not to be too critical. But I thought you were too far off the mark here to say nothing. Keep up the good work, I’ve really made a habit of coming here.
I will work on shortening my comments…

Well, about last night’s match, I frankly dont know what Almunia was thinking. He should ve let Rooney be, instead of committing to that 50 50 ball, which eventually led to penalty. This is what WE (Arsenal) always do. And to my eyes, Diaby was just a result of Almunia’s stupidity. That penalty removed the juice out of the gunners. These guys were terrific on the night. But somehow, mentally, Wenger is too supportive of these kids. They have no sort of fear like Manutd have for SAF. Hence, we end up being short of perfect because “THERE S ALWAYS A NEXT TIME”. That attitude should not be there. 10 boys played a reasonable game till the penalty. If I were the manager, Almunia wouldnt be playing any more games for sometime to come because being the oldest in the team, he is the one who should be setting an example. That was simply not the case yesterday and honestly, if they dont get a new goalkeeper, Arsenal’s going nowhere. Almunia is the weakest link right now and I surely hope Wenger comes down hard on him. Diaby irrespective of his VIEIRA like potential, will always be messing up. He lacks what you would call BALLS OF STEEL and the determination to win, which eventually reflects on the rest of his teammates because of silly mistakes.
We deserved something out of yesterday, although anything other than 3 points wouldnt have done justice. My point being, I do not agree with Almunia s ratings. But otherwise, I am kinda liking this 4-3-3 formation. Would just love to see the others come out of injuries and play this system. Good times to come nevertheless I hope.

Dont forget that we played without Cesc, Nasri, Theo, Eduardo wasnt on his level and even Arshavin wasnt 100% fit.Even without all these players we were better then ManUtd and when they come back then we will be the old invincible Arsenal.
THE TITLE IS OURS THIS SEASON.

Where is the media craziness for Rooney’s dive last night???
And if you dont think it was a dive for some reason- how do you justify a penalty when the ball is in the 15th row before any contact is made???
And how do you not justify the mugging Arshavin recieved in the box, then the handling by Foster before he cleared???
Short and simple, the better team lost last night. We better get pissed off at this result and come back with a vengeance…

Good feedback, all. A couple of thoughts:
1. Maybe I was a bit harsh with Robbie’s rating. But on the shot where he forced Foster into a tough save, he did have a lot of goal to work with and had he angled it just a bit more it would have been a goal.
2. I neglected to mention Eboue’s disgraceful dive. I thought he’d put that sort of thing behind him, and I certainly wouldn’t have thought he’d have done something like that after all that has been going on with Eduardo. Sigh.
3. I just don’t agree with the criticism of Almunia and Clichy. As I said, apart from being a bit late and unlucky on the challenge with Rooney, I thought he was pretty stellar yesterday. And I thought Clichy was good as well–good defensively on the wing and pretty good on the ball. Obviously he doesn’t “cheat” up as much against a team like Manchester United as he does against lesser teams, so he doesn’t make quite as many runs, but he looked good to me. So I think his role against an elite team is a bit more limited than usual, and it’s not surprising he wasn’t as involved in the attack.
4. Finally, I didn’t deal with Mike Dean’s completely stupid and unnecessary “sending off” of Arsene Wenger about a minute from time. When the injury team equalizer that wasn’t was disallowed, Wenger was so disappointed that he kicked a water bottle. Dean overreacted, sent him to the stands (where the crowd had been calling him a pedophile the whole match–isn’t it funny how that never gets mentioned by the media? Arsenal fans get criticized for being “plastic” fans or quiet fans, but when other clubs’ fans make disgusting, defamatory personal accusations, it never comes up…), and just generally made a spectacle of himself. Wenger and Arsenal fans deserve better.

“Must hand it to Rooney again for being FEARLESS.”
If by “FEARLESS” you mean “unafraid to dive and then cry for a penalty before he even hits the ground” then i agree whole heartedly. but i suspect that’s not what you mean. rooney makes me ill. non-stop whining, non stop hacking, and now that his girlfriend left for spain, apparently he’ll be the diver-in-chief.
decent ratings, but i actually thought ramsey was pretty useless. gave away two or three balls in the first minutes he was on. wonder when we’ll see wilshire. i like ramsey, but if you need a goal, i think wilshire’s got more goals in him.

look i know it is all part of the job of the opposing fan to give our players stick but do the Manchowder fans realize how hypocritical it is for them to boo/jeer eduardo for diving when they harbored the biggest diving cheating cuntmonkey in european football for a handful of years? seriously, the nerve.

-Alexinho the formation we using against man utd, was 4-4-2, it was not 4-3-3. although I agree with all what you said.
-Vignesh it is non sense, Almunia is our best goal keeper. and he is in my opinion one of the best in england. yes he did a mistake here, but you dont stop playing him for one mistake. I completely disagree with you.
-Theo Walcott 14 I totally agree with you, actually I was telling one of my friends about it, that what if we had these players available. WE wouldve killed the game in the first half

-MoMONEY it is not a dive there was contact. the only thing, if he did not give us the arshavin penalty then rooney shouldve not got his penalty

gooner- not exactly a dive. but watch the replay again and see how he drags his leg to make contact. and how he’s falling before almunia gets there. not a dive. but he was penalty-fishing.

Almunia
Sagna-Vermaelen-Gallas-Clichy
Nasri-Song-Cesc
Walcott/Rosicky-RvP-Arshavin
This is a master formation.I am really looking forward to see this formation on the pitch.
Evaldo:
Thats just part of the game. There will always be stupid fans that dont even know what they are doing or saying.Their IQ is probalby on the same level with Ronaldos,LOL.Not every clubs fans are smart and clever like Arsenals.

My point with the Rooney penalty is that it isn’t a penalty because he didn’t control the ball. In fact he wasn’t even close to controlling the ball as it was in the stands before he even got to Almunia…
Eboue dove and shouldn’t have but I think Wenger answered that question perfectly. One team showed up to play football, the other didn’t. One incident doesn’t change all of this. It seems the title of “Divers” is going to be put on our beloved Gunners. All I have to say is my my how quickly they have forgotten about Ronaldo. Anyone with any objectivity will see the truth in the situation.
Its amazing that the team that shows up to play football ends up with 6 yellow cards while the team deliberately trying to foul and destroy the game has considerably less (I think 3 but I dont remember exactly…)
The bias in England is absolutely remarkable and what’s more remarkable is that so many cannot see it.
Lastly I want to point something out. Wenger is always criticized (in the media) for saying he didn’t “see” an incident and he recently came out and admitted to it. I have never had a problem with him defending his players in this way but is it really worse then Alex Ferguson coming out and blatantly lying by saying Fletcher’s was a clean takle, and using his power to public acknowledge the greatness of the referee that made the call??? Its all in the video above and its absolutely ridiculous… To me it comes down to a deeply rooted xenophobia in England. Wenger and Rafa get lambasted and their teams no respect, while Ferguson, Redknapp, Allardyce and other trash are seen as saviors because they are British. Its an absolute disgrace.
The truth is out there just people choose to ignore it and the media helps them do so. The BBC commentary was much better then the other channel (what I was watching here in the states) though…

Lastly- I really hope this game becomes a turning point for us. Our team should be pissed. Very pissed. I hope this puts an “Us against the world” mentality in them and they continue with a vengeance. I wouldn’t mind them heating up the rivalry like the old days when Man U come to the Emirates later in the year…

“Dean overreacted, sent him to the stands (where the crowd had been calling him a pedophile the whole match–isn’t it funny how that never gets mentioned by the media…Wenger and Arsenal fans deserve better.”
Really? You think the ref was complimented by Wenger while he was throwing his hissy fit? If you’re gonna be a little child than you’re gonna go sit in the corner. Who cares what Arsene was called, he’s an EPL Coach, he should have Thick Skin. That’s what fans and players say about refs while they’re calling them much worse than pedophiles.

Dustin–
There was less than a minute less in the game, so it’s not like Wenger posed a real threat of disruption. The main thing, though, is that Wenger did NOT attack the referee or any of the assistants–he didn’t say a single word to them. He simply got upset that the goal was (rightfully) disallowed, and kicked a water bottle in frustration.
As for your second rationale, you are basically saying that these are professional athletes and coaches, and fans pay money, so fans should be able to call them whatever they want? So are you saying that there’s nothing wrong with fans making monkey noises whenever a black player on the opposing teams have the ball? Or throwing bananas at them? Or Mexican fans throwing bags of urine at players? Or chanting “to the gas chamber” at a Jewish player?
According to your logic–hey, who cares, they’re professional footballers, they should have “thick skin,” and put up with egregiously offensive insults from drunken idiots on a weekly basis, right?
In case you haven’t already gathered, I strongly, strongly disagree with you. Fans are going to poke fun at players on the other side, and that’s fine, even healthy. But call me old-fashioned, because I believe in some basic level of decency that shouldn’t be crossed by fans. When Arsenal supporters used to chant indecent things at Sir Alex Ferguson, (a) Fergie wouldn’t stop crying about it in the media, but (b) the Arsenal organization stepped in and put a stop to it. Unlike the way Manchester United has reacted to its own fans’ terrible behavior.
I guess some clubs have class and some clubs don’t.

one shud understand that wengers after match reaction 2 a defeat are always the same-take the heat off his own players
wenger has reacted in a way that the arsenal fans dont blame diaby for the loss,in return wemger will be hated by the united masses
but seriously think what would wenger care about more-arsenal fans hating diaby or united fan hating himi agree on almunia-he has been good n doesnt deserve the heat he is facing from the fans

I totally agree with everything you said, except your rating of Eboue. In my opinion Eboue should get a 3 for the dive, in light of the Eduardo controversy.

Missed your follow-on post Martin, I see you at least mentioned Eboue’s dive then.
And Alexinho, you said, “Arshavin could not have been man of the match, because he did so little. Otherwise, nothing.”
My response is:
1. One thing I’ve noticed about Arshavin is that he isn’t a big end-to-end player, but plays in amazing little spurts, like some sort of football ninja who comes out of nowhere and scores goals. Last time I checked that was Arshavin’s primary job description–score goals. I’m not sure what more you were expecting from him, perhaps some CR7-style brilliance?
2. It was made known that he wasn’t 100% going into the match, making what he did in this match all the more impressive.Posted from

Arshavin also set up the RVP shot that Foster somehow saved… He played well though he is clearly not in shape at all. He is one ofo the few players we have who fears nothing. This is the next step in our development and if we had the full squad it would have been a bit better. Just seems a lot of players are intimidated by United. I think this game will go a long way to showing them they shouldn’t be

If you read a little more closely I was saying it’s hypocritical for people to say Referees should have “thick skin” and not players or managers.
