Marseille 0 – Arsenal 1: The View is Nice from the Top of the Group

Ramey winner
Finally, a late goal goes in our favor, we keep a quality opponent from scoring, and we secure a huge win in the Champions League. Aaron Ramsey, who only came on in the 78th minute, coolly fired home in stoppage time after a nice cross from Djourou was deflected by Gervinho, right onto Ramsey’s path. Although the match wasn’t always a beautiful thing to behold, we’re now sitting on top of our group with seven points, one ahead of Marseille. Perhaps more importantly, Dortmund lost today, leaving them at the bottom with just one point. All that means that after three matches, we’ve basically assured ourselves a spot in the knockout rounds. It’s hard to see it getting away from us at this point, although of course there’s work to do to win the group.
France Soccer Champions League

The first half saw us starting a bit slowly, without threatening the Marseille goal much at the start. Song picked up a yellow in the 4th minute, when he prevented what would have been a pretty good scoring opportunity. In the 9th minute, Walcott put in a good ball to RvP, but it was ruled offside, even though the header was wide anyway. Marseille threatened again in the 13th, and Jenkinson could have easily given away a penalty kick when a cross went off his hand. We were lucky to dodge that bullet. That no-call by the ref was cancelled out about seven minutes later, when Arteta’s corner was knocked away by the hand of Diawara in the box. The deflection went to RvP, whose header was cleared off the line. At the time I saw it, I thought Mert got his head to it, but the replays clearly showed what should have been a handball decision. In the late stages of the half, we were fortunate to avoid danger on a few occasions. In the 31st minute, Remy schooled Mert in the box, and then Jenkinson looked clumsy in trying to win the ball as well. But Wojo wasn’t really threatened in the end. Kos had to make a desperation tackle a few minutes later when our offside trap was beaten. And then finally, just before half, Santos could have been sent off for a clear handball. He was already carrying a yellow from a body check on Valbuena in the 16th, and he also had another late challenge for a foul as well. So we entered halftime fortunate to still have 11 men on the field, to be honest.

The second half didn’t really feature as much action as the first. As an example, we took eight corners in the first half, while they had one. In the second, I believe there was only one total corner taken, which was ours. In the 58th minute, Song eventually took a ball away from danger after it fell into a dangerous area and bounced around among Mert and Jenkinson, although with a couple of Marseille players. Jenkinson, who had a pretty good game up until his injury, went off for Djourou in the 62nd. Shortly thereafter, we had perhaps our best chance up to that point, when N’Koulou gifted Theo a chance to break in on goal, but his shot was kicked away by Mandanda. The next good chance I can recall was taken by Marseille, when Valbuena made Mert look like a statue, while creating a chance in the 82nd minute. However, that chance was cleared from danger, and it looked like not much would happen from there on out. Like many fans, I was starting to tell myself that 0-0 away from home is a good result, and it sets us up fairly well for the rest of the group stage.

But then Ramsey collected the deflection from Gervinho, took a few steps, and slotted it past Mandanda. I really enjoyed watching the camera shot of the Arsenal fans’ celebration after that goal. They were letting out the shout of relief that a lot of us felt after a disappointing start to the season.

While not all the news was positive, and we await the news on the Jenkinson injury, this will hopefully be a good shot in the arm for our league campaign. And with the return match with Marseille coming at home, I think we’re pretty well set up to hopefully win the group. That means that, unlike last season, we probably won’t be matched up with Barca, Real Madrid, or Inter in the first knockout round. So yeah, the stoppage time goal was good for us on a few different levels.

Full time stats:

Marseille … Arsenal

14 Fouls 13

4 Offsides 4
45% Time of Possession 55%
3 Yellow Cards 3

Player ratings are a bit difficult to do for this one. The goal was created by the three players who came on as subs, and it’s hard to give players an adequate rating after limited action. And all of our defenders had shaky moments, but yet we didn’t allow any goals. Anyway, here’s my best crack at some ratings:

Wojo – 7.5. He didn’t have much to do, so I can’t rate him higher. But he also didn’t make any wrong moves either, and looked assured every time he was called into action.
Santos – 4.5. His first half was particularly poor, where he made several mistakes and could have easily collected two yellow cards. He just makes too many defensive mistakes, and doesn’t seem that smooth with the ball at his feet either. At least things got better in the second half.
Jenkinson – 6.5. Overall, a solid effort. There were a couple of times when he looked clumsy – when dealing with Remy in the first half, and the scrum in the box in the second half. Also, he could have easily conceded a penalty kick for handball in the first half, in which case his rating would be lower. But still, I like his work rate, and his crosses are usually good. Is it crazy that he seems to touch the ball twice as much as our so-called attacking midfielder, Arteta?
Koscielny – 7.5. He was our best defender by a long way on the day. There were a couple of shaky moments from him as well, but overall, he dealt with danger and had a few important clearances.
Mertesacker – 6. His clumsy moments started early on and continued from there. He obviously is going to have trouble dealing with small, agile players like Valbuena. But even still, he was completely undressed a couple of times and could have cost us a goal.
Song – 7.5. He didn’t have much of a start, picking up a yellow card in the 4th minute when he was beaten by Remy and forced to pick up a foul. He gradually got things going, helping out on both ends and breaking up attacks. I’m sure many fans were worried about a second yellow, since the first one came so early. But he never really came close to being sent off, so credit to him for that too.
Arteta – 5. Yawn. If it weren’t for the fact that he takes half the corners, would anyone notice him at all? I honestly didn’t know he was on the field most of the time. I don’t recall any horrible mistakes, but we also need to have our central midfielders creating more chances, and he didn’t do that today.
Rosicky – 6.5. I liked his work rate, as usual. He did quite a bit at both ends, and picked up a few Marseille fouls as well. But just like with Arteta, there was never any end product – either a decisive pass or shot on goal.
Arshavin – 5.5. He tried to link up with RvP a few times, and had a few moments. But still, he was never a real threat to the Marseille goal, and his final touch was a wasted cross that amounted to nothing.
Walcott – 5.5. A sequence in the 26th minute summarized his day. He put a long ball ahead to himself and raced onto it, but then he didn’t make much of the cross, despite earning a corner. In the second half, he didn’t do much that I can recall, and was rightly taken off for Gervinho in the 67th minute.
RvP – 6.5. It’s hard to give him a proper rating. I can’t blame him for wasted chances, and he did have a header cleared off the line at the 20 minute mark. A few times, he lacked the support to create chances. Overall, he didn’t really do anything wrong, and put in a nice effort. But it’s hard to give a center forward more than the rating I have, when he didn’t score or assist.

Subs:
Djourou – 7. He played out of position at RB after the Jenkinson injury. The yellow he picked up was wrongly given, in my humble opinion. He was average until the final cross that set up the goal.
Gervinho – 8. Man of the Match. He only played about a third of the match, but he looked lively from the time he went on the field. He didn’t really create any great attacks from all of it, but did finally deflect the Djourou cross to set up the winning shot from Ramsey. I guess that’s enough for MOTM on a day when it was hard to determine.
Ramsey – 8. The goal was well-taken, and will hopefully boost his confidence going forward. I’m not sure how to rate him other than that, since he was only on for a short period of time.

Well, that’s it for today. I need to post this quickly so I can move on to some other things that need to get done. We’ll be back later in the week with an update on various news items, injuries, and so forth.

Only watched the replay of the goal, but are you really giving Gervinho Motm for "deflecting the cross"? That wasn't on purpose, he miscontrolled.

both of this comments were hilarious.  Nice ribs on both Theo and Fergie lol.

  • Kas123

I hear a lot of folks touting Gotze, I would love to have him, but how about Sebastian Giovinco. I know he's small, but that's seems to be the type Wenger likes anyway. I mean the guy is currently lighting up Serie A and has been under the radar for a few seasons now. He's an attacking player that would fit perfectly in our system. He's young, has great vision, exceptional dribbling skills, and a knack for scoring goals. He could play in CAM (I could see him forming a lethal partnership with RVP), on the wing, or as forward. I mean the guy is  versatile going forward. He takes free kicks pretty damn good, he's tricky, and pretty intelligent about the game. The main reason, from what I understand, why he wasn't given a chance by Juve was because his size was a factor. I would love to see him at Arsenal.

  • LachlanS

He actually looks not to bad. But I can't see him leaving Parma any time soon to play for another club. Expecially one like oursleves who are renown for not paying large transfer fees. His contract would be long I can only assume.

  • Kas123

Maybe so, but we could have gotten him for about 7.5mil in June of this year. Thats what his market value was touted to be. We paid 12mil for Nasri a few years back, 15mil for AOC, so I think Giovinco would have been an affordable signing. But, like u said, I'm sure he has a long contract with Parma, most likely a buy-out cluase, and his valuation would be inflated just like all these other players out there.

  • LachlanS

Oh wow. I had no idea he went for so little.. I guess you can't make all the good buys. I have to say. I really worry about us making a huge signing in the next 12 months. If we do, and they turn out to be the next Shevchenko or Ibrahimovic, nowhere near as good as the price suggested, it would be a deadly blow to our club I think..

  • Bertrand

    Ibrahimovic is good.

He scored more goals than Villa in his first season at Barca.

PROBABLY not worth 70 mil, but that's more Barca's fault. Besides, no player is worth that. And Kaka wasn't worth 50 either heh, nor CR7 his 80.

  • LachlanS

Villa is a very different player than Ibrahimovic, and Villa has been playing alongside Messi in much more of his prime. Not saying he is better than Ibrahimovic, but I would say he is of similar quality, for around half the price.

CR7 was easily worth it for his commercial value. Not so much Kaka, but that is how Madrid roll, and it seems to work pretty well for them.

  • Kas123

True, we really don't have the option of buying a "bust" (player who fails to perform up to expected potential) at this point simply because our transfer kitty doesn't allow for it. I've hear talk about getting Gourcuff. I know he's recently come back from injury, but the guy was totally absent against Real Madrid on Tuesday. He seems as if he would be one to turn out like Shevchenko, or maybe he's already be a Shevchenko at Lyon. Also, i noticed you said the next 12 months, I too am a little weary of buying players in January because usually you dont get good value for money then.

  • Chicago Gunner

Someone needs to talk to Santos about taking unnecessary risks in his own half. His runs forward are great, but looks to be just plain dumb defensively. He tried to dribble in his own half when there were easy passes to be made, and what's with that near-handball with no one around him? I have decided I like Gibbs better. Arteta's passing is probably the best on the team, but he never got very far forward yesterday, which prevented him from setting up scoring chances. I think he's a little sluggish. Walcott frustrates me to no end. Unless he is in a footrace with a defender, he is invisible. Arshavin got absolutely shut down. I've never seen a player in any sport more hot and cold than this guy, and more often he's cold. After seeing Walcott go out for Gervinho to come on, I realized how good Gervinho is. Way better than Walcott. probably our best offensive player after RVP. Jenkinson performed above my expectations for him, as did Djorou. Per did well, but he will always be a liability 1 on 1 because of his size and correspondending lack of agility, so I don't fault him. Koscielny is a warrior and plays great consistently. Chezz is great, too. Lots of room for improvement in terms of personnel on this team. I'd sell Chamakh, Arshavin, Walcott and all the guys out on loan and sign Hazard and Gotze. That will keep RVP. Think about this starting 11: Sczcesny, Sagna, Vermaelen, Kosciely, Gibbs, Song, Frimpong/Coquelin, wilshere, hazard, gotze, rvp. gervinho and oxlade-chamberlain would be great backups/subs. same with ramsey and arteta. obviously, won't happen, because we don't want anyone blocking oxlade-chamberlain's ascent into the first team, now, do we? it would be terrible for the club to have multiple stars at the same position.

  • Kas123

I like ur thinking Chicago. To add to what you said, Merte sense of position is what makes him a good defender. I wish he would learn how to use his height tho. He doesn't get nearly as high as he should be able to for headers. Also, your tweaks sound like simple solutions, but modern day Arsenal loves having mediocre players, or Wenger at least. I wish Wenger would look a bit more at italy in his scouting as well. Giovinco is currently blowing up Serie A. I think he is an attacking player that would fit perfectly in our system. He has great vision, exceptional dribbling skills, and a knack for scoring goals. I would love to see him at Arsenal.

  • Did you see the game? You've said it yourself. Laurent Koscielny - 7 interceptions, 5 clearances, 3 Offsides won, and
one last man tackle that was absolutely superb, and likely saved a goal. He was a beast! MAN OF THE MATCH!

  • Homey_Mills

No, I never like to watch the games.  I just make stuff up.

  • We always figured, but now we know.

  • Leave the guy alone -- it's only his fourth favorite team, after all...

  • Gigi_man

Late goal, visitors, 3 points, top of the group.
I am enjoying like you have no idea.
I landed in MIami and got stuck with a bad gps and a late car rental, so couldnt watch the game, but the happiness of the win is superior to the sadness of not having watched.

  • Henkster

Defensively we were as tight as I've seen for a long while - KOS was superb and easily MOM. Arteta was solid enough and Gervinho did well when he came on but we need somebody other than RVP to step up offensively soon otherwise Ryo/Ox must surely be given their chance?

  • Patoux21

I would put Arshavin as GOTM ghost of the match ... dedicated to the Arshavin fan club. Gerv did more than Arshavin in his 20min

  • Rico

Scrappy game but for once we got the steal, and it was a steal. Marseille weren't the team we were all expecting and dreading. They were very poor on the night and if we had known this earlier I think we'd of stuck a few past them. Too much credit was given to Marseille.

On the players ranking; I agree with the minority, I think Kos was the MOTM as he was solid at the back and picked up where lanky Larry Mert fell down - literally.

Theo got more a higher rating than Arteta? I can remember two things Theo done, one was the lovely pass to himself to run onto and the other was the one on one with the keeper. Apart from that his crosses were atrocious and lost the ball more time than I care to remember. Arteta held his own and put in some good tackles and passes, didn't see him doing too much wrong or anything blatant.

As you may know I'm a fan of young Jenkinson, very impressed by his work rate. He's a trying and provided better wing attacks and crosses than Theo. His defence was good, kept his marker at bay a lot of the time and provided several good clearances. 6.5 is low for him I feel. I hope his injury isn't too bad.

  • Homey_Mills

I nearly gave Jenkinson a higher number, but then thought more about the handball that could have easily been given.  (And probably should have been given.)

  • Arteta put in a few very good passes and was solid.
Rosicky, while far more energetic and and creative, gave the ball away quite often in the first half.
Song also gave the ball away too often. His forward passing was quite poor; his defending was pretty stellar, though he could have been sent off in the first half.
How on earth does Wojo deserve a 7.5 for doing nothing out of the ordinary?

  • Will

Lovely result, if a bit of a shaky performance save from a very solid performance by Kos.. Someone commented sarcastically on the Champions League facebook page that Torres would score a hattrick today, and it was thumbed-up for laughability.. He got pretty damned close today though.

  • Kas123

Gerv, MOTM. I usually agree with you Homey, but Kos deserved MOTM. I also think he deserves an 8. Mert deserved a 5.5, his ankles we broken so many times I don't know how he was still standing at the end of the game. Overall a great result, but a luke warm performance. As for Walcott, I hope he plays better this weekend against Stoke, they'll be better than Marseille and a lot more physical. I think his confidence is just in the dumps right now, he's healthy physically, but mentally is a different story. Anyway, good job on the write up Homey.

  • sofreshnsoclean

speaking of Mertesacker, is it me, or does he ALWAYS look like he's limping when he's on the ball? It worries the crap out of me...he always looks hurt...and also, Jenkinson always does too.

  • Casimir

He's just very lanky, so he looks like an awkward giraffe.  Even when he passes, the way he moves his leg I almost worry there's too much torsion on his leg and he's gonna hurt himself.

  • Kas123

I know right, I think Merte runs soo slow it looks like he's limping. Positioning is definitely his strong suite, and is indeed an important quality. If all our defenders had his sense of where to be, we'd be a much different defensively.

  • Homey_Mills

Well if I'm only .5 off on two players, I must not be too bad.  I really had a hard time figuring out who should be MOTM.  And since I was in a hurry, I didn't have time to really think it all over.

  • LachlanS

Dortmund on 1 point after three matches.. I can see him in the Arsenal jersey already...

  • Casimir

Can we get Lewandowski as a proper substitute for RVP too?  He's finally putting it all together and slotted away another one in an otherwise poor performance by Dortmund.

  • Kas123

Remember we got Park for that.

  • Kas123

Me too LachlanS and prob one of their defenders too. We throw a good 25mil at him, and give em Chamakh for good measure.

  • Carson Jenga

Kos was fantastic tonight cannot wait to get him back with Vermaelen. It seems to me and I know a few people have mentioned it already but Arteta is not playing CAM and is in a more withdrawn role and Rosicky is the CAM. In this regard, I think he did quite well and made some important tackles as well as conserving possession well which is what his position entails.

Oh and also I think Gervinho did create some great attacks, for one he sent Van persie through beautifully and I thought he could win it. He was also really running at their defense and stretching them, it is because of this we were able to score as Ramsey was allowed space.

  • Jenkinson had 52 touches in 62 minutes
Arteta had 90 touches in 90 minutes so you likely crazy for thinking Jenks touches the ball more ;)

  • Bertrand

I guess our resident blogger does not like to let 'facts' get in the way of a quality piece.

  • TJ_UGA

On average, he touches it just a wee tad less. About 76 touches on average if he played the whole game, and he usually when Jenk touches it, he goes forward, so I can see where he'd think that.

  • It's likely because Jenks is bombing forward on the flanks and crossing the ball like a madman, whereas Arteta is collecting and distrubting from the centre of the pitch.
Crossing from a flank are much more noticable

  • Laurent Koscielny - 7 interceptions, 5 clearances, 3 Offsides won, and one last man tackle that was absolutely superb, and likely saved a goal.
Is there really any doubt who was the best player in this game?

  • Homey_Mills

    Apparently there is.

  • FredJacob

    OM vs Arsenal Highlights http://dai.ly/qChyxo

  • To be honest Marseille were far from quality today, thank goodness we were able to capitalise (for once)

  • Goonergeneral

It is the way we played them that made them look poor.  They had all their key players, but we technically outplayed them. And when Gerv was introduced, he outran them and opened their backs.  You don't win at Marseille by shear lucky only, you need to play well as well, and well played we did.

  • i don't know how, or why, but we won and it feels good.
