Mid-Week Roundup
By: Darren_v | July 27th, 2011July is nearing an end, and there is plenty of evidence that the upcoming season is drawing near as actual news is starting to pick up and Arsenal.com is churning out more articles daily. I think we are all thankful for some real news instead of transfer sagas that never end, so let’s get to it.
Yesterday Arsenal officially confirmed the departure of youth product Jay Emmanuel-Thomas (aka JET) to Ipswich Town for a reported fee of 1.1 million and a 20% sell on fee if they manage to sell him in the future. JET has always been one of the more interesting youth players for me as he played virtually every position on the pitch for Arsenal as all the coaches seemed unsure of where he should play. JET looked different than most Arsenal players as he is a physically imposing man at 6’3” and bags of power and pace. He captained the FA Youth Cup-winning run in 2009, putting in a number of decisive moments to aid in winning the trophy. And yet…. There were always the comments from the coaches and Wenger himself that his skill and talent were never in question, but his heart and commitment were serious questions marks. Coming of age where Wenger had to decide on adding him to the 25-man roster or not finally sealed his fate for him and while it is disappointing to see him leave, it is just evidence that talent alone doesn’t cut it.*
* – This is incorrect as JET is still 20 years old, and therefore did not have to be named on the 25-man squad to be eligible to play.
On the tail winds of JET’s move was a twitter comment from Henri Lansbury suggesting a possible move was in store for him. The tweet has since been deleting and Twitter was running riot yesterday about Lansbury not getting the chance he deserved for Arsenal, especially considering the chances players like Denilson and Diaby were given. To me this all has to do with timing of when these players have attempted to break into the first team however. At the time of Denilson’s first appearances Emirates Stadium was in the midst of being built and the start and acceptance of the youth system was in place. Arsenal’s trophy years had just occurred and Denilson showed a lot of promise to begin with. Fans were curious and patient to see these players grow, as Fabregas was seemingly evidence to great things coming. Fast forward six years and Gooners everywhere are tense, angry and uptight, fearful of the future and the pressure to win trophies has never been higher in North London. The patience for Wenger to produce success is almost completely gone, and players like JET and Lansbury leaving earlier are evidence of this.
It is very interesting to gauge the outrage for Henri Lansbury and the seemingly disinterest for one Kyle Bartley’s and their potential departures. They are both English and have displayed willingness to fight and ‘put a shift in’ when they do play, something everyone acknowledges that is lacking at Arsenal. Bartley had a very successful loan spell up in Scotland for Rangers, playing a vital role for them during the second half of the season. Lansbury, while a decent loan spell, spent half of the season as a super-sub, and rarely starting for Norwich. In order for Lansbury to become a first team player in the Red and White, he must beat out established first teamer in no particular order of Fabregas, Wilshere, Ramsey, Nasri, Arshavin, Walcott, Vela, Diaby, Gervinho, and Rosicky, depending on where you slot Lansbury onto the pitch. Bartley’s competition for the 4/5th Central defender role only consists of Sebastian Squillaci and Iqnasi Miquel. Now make no mistake, Lansbury has long been my favorite youth team player but the fact is he must leapfrog a minimum of four players whereas Bartley only needs to leapfrog two. And yet Lansbury’s lack of chances in the first team is where Gooner’s ire lies. Something doesn’t add up to me. There seems to be a general expectation of every single player from Arsenal’s youth system, which they must become big name and if they do not, it is a massive failure or a mistake by Arsenal. Tom Cruise was a big name for the left-back position just a year or two ago, and was released outright this summer despite having played a Champions League game versus Olympiakos. But the harsh reality is, very few come to the top of World football, and we as fans must temper our expectations, especially in this age of social media and mass hype.
On the injury front which is a staple for all Arsenal News is that Conor Henderson will be out a minimum of six months after damaging his cruciate ligaments when he twisted his knee in the 2-1 win over Cologne. This is a massive setback for a player Wenger well liked, and hopefully he can come back next year and push on, as injuries have the unfortunate consequence of destroying many careers. It has also been revealed that Theo Walcott has left Germany for a scan on a re-occurring ankle injury from last season that he cannot seem to shake. This has to be a major worry in my opinion as it sounds like Walcott has been dealing with this for quite some time and is no stranger to injuries.
Tomas Rosicky thinks that althought the Carling Cup final was a setback, it is not what went wrong at the end of the season. According to Rosicky it was our home form down the stretch, and that Arsenal will learn from it. Because we have never heard that before of course.
Andrei Arshavin is targeting 15 goals this season, and says
“I think we will get stronger and stronger,” he told the Official Souvenir Programme.”In particular I think our work on set-pieces, both attacking and defending, will be better. We’ll also play a pressing game – if we do that well, I’m sure you’ll see an improved team.”
Yes please.
Arsenal.com has helpfully posted the relevant matches currently ongoing in the Champions League in regards to who Arsenal could face. They are:
Standard Liege (Belgium) v FC Zürich (Switzerland)
Benfica (Portugal) v Trabzonspor (Turkey)
Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine) 0-2 Rubin Kazan (Russia)
Twente (Holland) 2-0 FC Vaslui (Romania)
Odense (Denmark) v Panathinaikos (Greece)
Most of these teams look like they could potentially cause Arsenal a few problems, especially considering the uncertainity around our Captain and the suspensions of Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri and Arsene Wenger for the qualifiers.
And finally, everyone’s favorite player, Denilson, made his Sao Paulo debut on Saturday. He played 67 minutes with the score 2-1 when he came off and completed 75 passes out of 75. And no, not all were sideways or backwards. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.
