Midseason Q&A with Martin!
By: Homey | December 28th, 2011For those of you who haven’t been around longer than six months, this treat might well be lost on you. But Martin is still the man, the myth, the legend around here. He pretty much built this website into something really cool and active, and we’ve merely been trying to keep the momentum going since his departure. Anyway, you can still glean pearls of wisdom from Martin on his Twitter account, or just read this Q&A below:
1) Whatever happened to Martin on Mondays? I thought it would be the new Arseblog or something.
Yeah, guilty. I’ve been terrible about updating it. I don’t know if I’ll start it up again or not. I’m sure all (3 of) my regular readers will be disappointed…
2) How has the first half of the season played out compared to your expectations?
Well, overall, if you had told me 33 points from 18 matches, and in 5th place, I think I’d think that was about what I expected, maybe I’d be a tad bit disappointed. But I don’t think I would have anticipated the roller coaster nature of the season — we were so abysmal the first few matches, but then have really turned it around. I also didn’t think Wenger would go in for so many veterans in the transfer window, but I think overall they’ve had exactly the effect we would have hoped for. So, I don’t know, we’re probably about where I thought we’d be at the mid-point, but I didn’t quite foresee the route we’ve taken to get here.
3) Which of the Manchesters do you think will win the league title this year?
I think City definitely has the stronger squad, but I’ll say United. They’ve just done it so many times before, and they’ve got that experience. Plus, I think Ferguson is going to splash out some money to stabilize their midfield in January, which could set them on the right path. There’s every chance this prediction is going to be dead wrong and I’ll feel stupid come May, though.
4) How do you see things going against AC Milan and possibly beyond?
Well, we’ve beaten AC Milan before, but I think this year’s version is better than that team we beat in 2008. Honestly, I don’t really watch Serie A so I don’t feel like I know much about them. So I’ll just go ahead and optimistically predict that we’ll get through that one and get to the quarterfinal or semifinal. It’s really hard to see us getting much further than that, let alone winning, but who knows — I think we’re better than that 2004-2005 Liverpool team, and anything can happen in a knockout competition.
In terms of the league, I think we have a real battle on our hands for 4th, but hey, Wenger’s never failed to finish below 4th before, so I’ll pick us to finish ahead of 2 out of the 3 of Chelsea, Spurs, and Liverpool and finish 4th on the last day of the season.
5) What do you expect to happen in the January transfer window, and what do you hope will happen?
I honestly don’t see a whole lot happening. Maybe a young player or two. And I really think the Henry short-term signing could happen. But I don’t know, I’m not optimistic about Wenger bringing in an impact player. Although I would say that the one time Wenger has brought in an established, marquee signing in January was when we were in real danger of missing out on 4th place when he bought Arshavin, and that was pretty similar to the situation we’re in now.
I’d like to add an attacker. For me, one of the biggest issues with this year’s side is that when it’s late in a match and we’re tied or behind, we just don’t have any guys to come on to make an impact on the match. At this point, Arshavin and Chamakh just are not getting the job done. We need someone who can come on and rescue points every now and then, and we don’t have it. That’s been the difference between 4th and 5th so far. I’m not convinced by Podolski — he’s certainly been good for Germany and is versatile and experienced, but he’s been very inconsistent at the club level, and from what I’ve read he seems like kind of a dick. But someone of that ilk would be nice.
6) Prior to this season, Sagna was the one Arsenal player who was almost immune to injury. Then you bought his jersey, and he promptly got injured. Why, Martin, why?
My bad. Big question now is whose jersey I should buy next year — mainly debating between Koscielny and Wilshere, so if the agents for either one of those gentlemen are interested in compensating me to not buy their client’s shirt, I am entertaining offers.
7) How realistic are hopes of a trophy at this point in the season?
I’d really say not very likely at all. We’re out of the Carling Cup, and basically have no chance of winning the league. The Champions League seems very unlikely, which means the only competition we have any kind of realistic shot at winning is the FA Cup. We definitely could win that, but the odds are never that good of winning a knockout competition.
At this point, if we could finish 4th in the league, get past AC Milan, and make it relatively deep in the FA Cup, I think that would be a pretty fantastic finish to the season that I feel we couldn’t have too many complaints about given how we started.
8 ) Which players have been your biggest positive and negative surprises so far?
Well, van Persie staying healthy and continuing to be the player we all hoped he could be has been a huge positive, obviously. The surprise there is just his continued health, not his quality.
I think Gervinho has been better than I thought he would be — he takes a lot of (possibly justifiable) flack for bad finishing, but pretty much everything else about his game has been fantastic. I think the finishing will come, and he’s going to be a really potent weapon in attack, hopefully for many years to come.
He hasn’t been as good lately, but I have been pleasantly surprised by Ramsey. I was very skeptical that he could ever fill that forward playmaking midfield role, because I thought he was only suited to be more of an all-around, box-to-box type. But he has shown some real technique and creativity in that role at times that I didn’t know he had. I still think I’d rather see Wilshere in that role going forward, but Ramsey is a real option.
I was a big fan of Koscielny toward the end of last year, but I think he’s continued to develop into one of the best defenders in the Premier League at the moment.
Based on what some people who followed the Brazilian game said, I had very low expectations for Santos, but I have to say I’ve certainly been pleasantly surprised by him so far. He’s not overly fast, his positioning isn’t great, and he makes far too many wild, lunging tackles, but he’s hardly the defensive catastrophe he was made out to be, and he adds so much going forward that he’s worth the liabilities. Also, he’s just so much fun to have in the team, between his swashbuckling style on the pitch, the fact that he proudly drives a Smart car, and his insane tweets.
I think Arshavin has been a disappointment. He was a supremely frustrating player at times last season, but was still, as he showed against Barcelona, capable of moments of magic, and his stats showed that he still had a lot of attacking value. But this season, he’s given us a paltry 2 goals and 1 assist in 20 appearances in all competitions. If his sole value is as a creative goal-creator, and I think that it is, that’s not nearly enough to make up for his liabilities in other areas.
Chamakh has also continued to disappoint. I honestly can’t figure it out. Gone is the industry and craft he showed at the beginning of last year, and with each disappointing, ineffective performance, it seems less and less likely we’ll ever see that player return again. Which is a real shame, because most fans seem to have forgotten just how good he was those first few months.
He hasn’t been bad, but I will say I’ve been slightly disappointed by Mertesacker. He’s been solid, I’m very glad we signed him, and he certainly deserves a chance to settle in, but his lack of mobility has been as advertised, he’s been too easily pushed around, and he’s been mistake prone. He’s definitely a good defender, and will hopefully be better, but I think I had my expectations a bit too high for him.
Probably unfair to him, but I have to throw Park in as well. I was hopeful he could be the attacking impact sub we need, but the fact that he hasn’t been given a chance at all makes me think he hasn’t shown enough in training to give Wenger any faith in him.
This isn’t really through any fault of his, but I have to say Gibbs’s season has been a negative surprise as well. Many of you know how big a fan of his I am, and this was the season when he really needed to stay healthy and grab the starting left-back job with both hands, but his terrible health record has continued. It’s looking increasingly likely that he’ll never reach his potential because he just can’t stay healthy for any sustained period of time, which is a real shame for both him and the club.
9) Do you think van Persie’s long-term future is with Arsenal?
It could go either way. The fact that he’s hired Darren Dein as his agent, who has made a fortune convincing Arsenal players to leave for other teams, certainly doesn’t bode well. And he probably can make more money elsewhere. But I’ll be optimistic and say yes, because (a) Wenger is desperate to keep him, and I do think he’ll go outside the wage structure to do so; (b) I think RvP genuinely loves Arsenal and loves being captain of the club; and (c) while other clubs may offer a better chance at trophies, very few of them can say that the entire side is built around him like Arsenal will.
I think Theo may be an even more interesting case — he’s been more frustrated and petulant at times this season, and it seems to reflect an underlying unhappiness. He’s also gotten more vocal about wanting to play down the middle, which he has not been given a chance to do thus far. Just seems like, despite the fact that he’s been quite good for us this season, he’s unhappy and may very well try to move elsewhere this summer.
10) Where do you think Arsenal will finish in the league, and will there be a St. Totteringham’s Day this season?
I’ll be optimistic and say 4th, behind the Manchester sides and Chelsea. I predict that there will be a St. Totteringham’s Day, but it will come very, very late in the season. For as much as Arsenal fans just automatically dismiss Spurs, the reality is that they are a very good side this year, and have a substantial lead over us (5 points up with a match in hand) at the moment. And they don’t have European matches to worry about, so they can focus on their remaining 21 league matches. Overtaking them will not come easily at all.
