Nasri Departs, Arsenal’s Pile of Money Grows
By: Homey | August 23rd, 2011
Most of us have been expecting this announcement for a while, and it finally came through today on the club’s official website. In recent days, however, there was talk that Nasri might play against Udinese, which would leave him ineligible to play in the Champions League for Man City at a later date. I’m not sure if that prompted City to increase their bid, or if Nasri had a hissy about it, or what. But anyway, all the parties involved finally acted with some urgency, and the deal has been completed. At this early hour, I’m not sure the exact financial details of either the money Nasri will be paid, or the money Arsenal will receive. However, a figure of £24 million to Arsenal has been reported.
Before I get to what all of this means for Arsenal, and where we go from here, I’ll say a few words about Nasri’s stay in North London. While he didn’t have nearly the rich history with the club as Cesc, having arrived in the summer of 2008 from Marseille, he did give us quite a few good moments. He was pretty handy in his first two seasons, scoring 12 total goals in all competitions. Last year was a breakthrough, where he scored a few tasty goals, and finished with 15 total on the season. He also played 90 minutes for us against Liverpool a few days ago, and seemed to put in a very solid effort in our defeat. So I respect him for that, at least.

I guess people will believe what they wish regarding what sort of contract was offered to him, and at what point, etc. I really don’t know. All I know is that most of us thought a year ago that he was going to stay with us for a while. Then we started to gradually get concerned that he didn’t put pen to paper on a new deal, and now it’s obvious that we either had to sell or lose him on a free transfer next summer. Along the same lines, we can’t say for sure that it was all about the money for Nasri, although we certainly suspect it. But if he believes he has a better chance at winning titles for City right now than at Arsenal, I can’t really argue with him on that either. Mata recently said as much regarding his deal with Chelsea. At some point, we’re going to have to prove ourselves again that we’re a destination club and not simply a launching point.
Now I know most of you regular readers are expecting me to jump all over Wenger yet again. And at some point, I might. But to be honest, selling Nasri was the most logical thing to do at this point, rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer. I know there was the now infamous quote from Wenger during the month of June, where he stated, “If you sell both Cesc and Nasri, you cannot convince people you are ambitious after that.” And if we left it at that, I think he’s correct. None of us would be convinced that we support an ambitious club. But the other side of that coin is IF we ever reinvest all that money aggressively, then it’s really not a big deal. I mean, Man Utd has lost players like Beckham and Ronaldo over the years, but they’ve kept on spending that money and moving forward. And frankly, I think £24 million is a very tidy sum for a guy who was brilliant for only about half of one season. And while I don’t think he’ll fall on his face like Hleb once did after leaving, I also don’t think he’ll be a real £24 million sort of player for City either. If we could purchase Hazard for roughly the same amount of money, I think we’d come out ahead – particularly in long run.
But we’re definitely at a point in the transfer window where we have to be concerned about how things will turn out. I don’t expect any new signings in the next two days, as the team heads to Italy for a crucial match tomorrow. And it’s entirely possible that deals are on hold as our targets await word on whether we’re going to qualify for the Champions League. Also, the club may be waiting to see how much revenue it will have this season. Anyway, if we start our dealings in earnest on Thursday, we’ll have exactly one week to conclude our deals before the window shuts. Let’s hope that as soon as the plane lands back in London, we’ll hit the ground running and make something happen.
I won’t really discuss our transfer targets at the moment. I’m sure you’ve all read the speculation about Hazard, M’Vila, Jagielka, and many others. We’ll probably be back on Thursday or Friday with an update on that. But for now, I’ll go ahead and get this one up so that JG can post his Udinese preview later today. I’m not sure about a live blog tomorrow, but I think JG will also do the Udinese recap as well.
