Nasri in the middle

By: travis | January 13th, 2009

Not a very creative title for tonight’s post, but sometime when it’s an off night, pretending that I’m a good writer is a bit difficult. While considering ideas, it came upon me to focus on the key player who will help this team to the CL or beyond in the remaining few months. That and I was sick of Arshavin. He may or may not come. He’s needed, but that’s a matter that has been addressed.

I was perusing the net and came across this short interview with Arsene on Samir Nasri, and why he moved him into the middle. This quote got me thinking about how vital a role that the little Frenchman will play, as perhaps our most important player between now and RoC (return of Cesc):

“He gave us a little bit more creativity in the centre, especially in a tight game like that,” said the manager.

“Of course, he [Nasri] is a link player and can also pass people.

“From then on it became a little bit more difficult for Bolton. It was my idea – sometimes accidentally I have them.”

Exhibit A for what Nasri can do is his pass that set up Adebayor’s gaffe of a miss. He split the ball through three Bolton defenders, finding the unmarked striker who should have scored. Along with that, he is now the man for just about all setpieces, and strong play from him is absolutely essential for any sort of good results as the season progresses.

I had read some opinions on the topic of Nasri in the middle, and found most of them to be mixed. With all due respect, someone with the creative talent of Nasri should be in the middle of the park where his influence is evident. It’s not like the Arsenal can’t win with him out on the left — where he does play well most of the time — but the more time he is on the ball the better. Throw in Vela on the left flank for some pace, Nasri in the center and just see what happens. Diaby hasn’t shown much of anything in the matches I’ve seen him in, and you’d have to think that if he can’t seize upon this opportunity with Cesc out, then it’s hard to seeing him with a future down the road. We’ll see.

i agree, nasri in the middle can make a difference, and arshavin coming or not, he i good, but he wont be able to play the CL, and..is he up to the toughnes of the Premier? i think the team has what it takes, they just need to focus, i mean come on beating wo of the top four and a null vs liverpool…that is not luck, and losing vs other tems ..that wa slack of concentration,
i still have faith in them,

hopefully this move will pay immediate dividends for my fantasy team.

if either rosicky or walcott got healthy that would be a major help for you guys. diaby is usually ok, but he had an appalling game last week.

Nasri in the middle. People used to see him as the next Zidane. When he arrived at Arsenal, they considered him as the next Robert Pires… He isn’t particularly fast. But his ball control is awesome. And this is an important aspect of being a complete central midfielder. Now, since Vela plays on the left flank, he’ll get more experience. Diaby should be a definitive defensive midfielder. Or else, he can be sold. (I used to like him… But, as the matches pass by, I’m starting to be annoyed of him.)
