Newcastle – Arsenal Match Thread

By: Martin | February 5th, 2011

Lineups are in:

Newcastle: Starters: Harper, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Simpson, Nolan, Tiote, Gutierrez, Barton, Best, Lovenkrands Bench: Krul, Ferguson, Ranger, Guthrie, Richardson, Perch, Slo

Arsenal: Starters: Wojo, Clichy, Sagna, Djourou, Koscielny, Diaby, Wilshere, Cesc, Theo, Arshavin, Van PersieBench: Almunia, Squillaci, Eboue, Gibbs, Rosicky, Bendtner, Chamakh

No surprises at all in the starting lineup, that’s what everyone predicted. And no real surprises on the bench, either. Hopefully Diaby is up for it and can make it the full 90 minutes, because, as we discussed in the comments section yesterday, if he or Wilshere get hurt, that could force us into a weird lineup/configuration.

This is a big match, so let’s get 3 points. Come on Arsenal.

  • HI,

Its nice post guys. Its very interesting guys.

    Thanks

  • Gigi_man

its simple, if one wishes to win the EPL one does not, even with a stupid ref, and 10 men, one simply do not let a 4 (four, cuatro) goal lead at a first half.

  • Gigi_man

yeah yeah, all things good and kept from commenting because by not commenting we were up by 4.
But why was Djorou out? I missed that...
And if rightly so was he taken out, well, why the hell do we try to play a la Inter, we dont play that game AW!!!!
Diaby is stupid, I still have fresh his own goal vs ManU , and now he has convinced me, he is not up for the task.
We wont even win the Carling if AW keeps reading his games like this.
Refs? yeah yeah big teams dont let 2 oenalties get on their f¨¨king way, its still a 2 goal lead for crying out loud!!!!
With this result I dont even bother anyore, we lost the league, and we will be fighting for 4th place, I hate to be angry and pessimist but this is previous seasons all over again.
We had a silver spoon and wwe didnt know how to eat with it.
Bye bye season IMO. With this strategy and attiitudes we wont win the Carlin nor the FA, league is lost, and UCL with what I saw today plus not buying and instead loaning players....Bon voyage titles...
Disgracful and a shame, big shame, specially on AW.
Because a lot of foreigners¿¿¿ lets count them at Chelski and Manue or Citeh!!!
We simply aree again, not up for the task, andt this time I really blame AW for playing it safe, it was a sahem , we looked afraid and they took advantage of that,
AW would be a horrible chess player, horrible.

  • Dude, chill. But it does feel good letting it all out. The CL has been out of reach since the minute we were drawn against Barca IMO. I think we can pick ourselves up from this, and hope Man U slip - the sooner, the better. We can blame the Phil D*wd, Barton's general cuntness, Johan's injury, Abou's red card.. all our viable excuses. But the way we melted in the second half is simply inexcusable. Surely this is a slip-up. There's nothing to look into it rather than the fact that the boys were intimidated and played horribly. Should Champions League contenders do this? Should Premier League contenders do this? Should even Carling up finalists do this? No, of course not. But the fans should give them a break, they have been playing really well the last couple of weeks.

  • Brian in Brooklyn

An hour or so has passed since the end of the game. I walked away from the laptop, finished reading the paper, and came back to peruse comment threads on Arsenal fanblogs. I agree that the second-half effort was pretty poor on our part. But I also agree that a lot of the ref's decisions went against us, and that didn't help our case. We're still 6-1-0 in our last 7 games in all competitions, with an aggregate score of 20-7. Yes, I realize Manchester United has the chance to go seven points up on us, and that those points will be hard to make up. What I don't understand are all the commenters willing to give up on the team, willing to hate on AW, etc. because of 45 minutes of unfortunate football.

  • Gigi_man

Yeah I know, ut felt good to let it out, I am chilling a bit more now, thx, really words from a fellow gooner always do good!
ALthough I think that even though the minute we drew Barza , with our run in form, psychologically we were better and Barza would be more attentive, things that can balance in our favour. Today Barza aughed again.
ManU dropping points yep, they will hopefully do, but the thing was them dropping and us keeping on winning.. ;(

  • And since they've lost against Wolves, I think I have Midas' touch ;) . No, seriously, although this ManU team is good, it certainly doesn't match up with our Invincibles in '04. Losing was bound to happen, especially considering how lucky they've been for a couple of games in a row. I don't know if it makes today's loss better or worse, but I do know that it is a reason for us to smile, even for a moment. Funnily enough, I think this could have a positive effect on the Barca fixture. I think most of us believe that Arsenal are heavy underdogs, considering that Barca are on good form, and we've become crappy again. Pressure is off Arsenal, and we all know that when the boys play without pressure, they're world-class. And I have to agree with Brian. We have been playing very consistently well for more than a couple of weeks, and you have to consider fatigue and injuries due to the insane congestion of fixtures. And if we had to slip up and put on a horror show, we might as well synchronize it with ManU's first defeat in the league :)

  • Gigi_man

Yeah man, keep that Midas touch up ;) !
Wolves victory gave me some chill and perspective. Yes, if it had to happen better in a day when Manure lost and better that we drew and didnt lose.
@ Brian, yeah man, As far as hating and yelling for 45 minutes, absolutely if it means a title, then those 45 mins are worth a season! Am I the most emotioal commenter around? maybe, the most àranoid? sure! But man my love for the Arsenal is solid, with all its flaws.

  • JG

I really hope Newcastle get relegated. And Phil Dowd ... won't say it because we are all civilized, well-meaning people here.

  • Sairax

I can't even talk right now. You guys go ahead without me

  • Peevish

We can bitch and moan about Phil Dowd all we like - the facts are:

    1. We knew Phil Dowd would give horrible decisions against us, due mainly to the fact he's a useless excuse for a football referee

    2. Newcastle also had a pretty shocking decision themselves when they had a goal ruled out because apparently the offside rule discounts any lazy Czech knob-heads in its last man in defense calculations

    3. We were horrible in the second half. Just horrible all over the pitch (Chesney possibly discounted). Is it time to bring up the old leadership debate? I think so

    4. Joey Barton is such a model football player, how could Newcastle possibly deserve to lose?

  • JG

All fair points, and I think it's fair to say that Djourou's sub played a part in our capitulation. Squizz didn't have a bad game per se, but we certainly lost our composure when dealing with.. just about anything from Newcastle.
And should we win the league (long long shot I know, but maybe our buddies from West London can do us favor twice), it would be the biggest "fuck off" to English refereeing in the planet.

  • Peevish

All fair points eh? AHA!! You fell into my bear-trap number 4 - J'Accuse!!!!

:P Just kidding. And yes hopefully we will have some favors handed out, although I refuse to refer to them as buddies...

  • Andylowe14

lets look at the key points of this game: a red card that should have been given to barton for that challenge but instead was given to diaby for a push. They score a penalty then put our goalie in a headlock which is apparantly only worth a yellow. The softest penalty that the ref gave from the other side of the box. The forth goal comes from a freekick won by joey barton after he theatrically falls down following a nudge from rosicky.

No doubt people will hail newcastles comeback as a fine achievement as the final goal was fantastic but the freekick was soft, and the ref was undoubtedly affected by the crowd in the second half. To make it worse one of the slime bags of football joey barton was invilved in all these incidents.

I think im gonna go and be sick

  • Swapnil

you can blame the ref all you want but no matter how bad the refree is, no matter if the team is down to 10 men,you just CAN'T concede a 4 goal lead against an average team who have just sold their biggest goal threat without getting a replacement when youconsider yourself title contenders!!so shut up and stop making excuses

  • SJGgumby

I really don't blame Cesc for wanting out of the EPL.

  • Danish Gooner

Phil Dowd would never have done this to Manure,he wouldnt have dared.WHAT A FAT USELESS ANTI-ARSENAL BASTARD.

  • Georgedb1

Yep... give me a referee that will give me the soft penalties and the free kicks and I can coach a League 2 team to come back from even a 6-0 deficit against any PL side.

  • JG

And Spurs won their game in injury time. Jesus.
SJGumby: yeah, i swore RVP was onside as well.

  • SJGgumby

I don't even feel bad about this. You simply cannot win the league against refereeing like this. Two horrible penalties, not calling that Barton challenge, keeping Nolan on the pitch and a host of other poor decisions. Just nothing that can be done against that. And RVP was just onside for that disallowed goal.

  • Gigi_man

I say there are teams that have done it...we simply cant be u 4 0 at a half time, what the hell does AW thinks when playing to defend the lead??? I am upset, so upset that dont even know what to say.
But we called upon oursleves. By bye league, bye bye UCL, and I wouldnt be surprised if byt bye Carling and FA cups.
    Fuck off AWs decisions.

  • Danish Gooner

Exactly, how can you win a game like this when you are playing against 12 men.

  • JG

I can't believe what just happened, happened. Yes Diaby was an absolute shit-head for getting himself sent off. But you know what? Barton and later Nolan should have been sent off as well. FUCK YOU PHIL DOWD, HOW HARD DID JOEY BARTON SUCK YOUR COCK TO DO THIS TO US!?

  • Bitter much?
So when the ref disallowed a perfectly legitimate Newcastle goal when Rosicky played Best onside was that the ref neing biased against Arsenal? Really?

Come on...both teams had questionable decisions against them. Arsenal fell apart becasue they are mentally weak. Simple as that. They should have won by a bucket load, nobody's fault but their own that they didn't. Newcastle can complain about the ref too.

  • bapdum

    greatest fml post ever

i watched arsenal play today FUCK MY LIFE

  • Danish Gooner

Van Persie not offside, they really are getting all wrong today.

  • Kweku

I cannot fucking believe what I have just witnessed. Abou Diaby no longer deserves to wear the Arsenal shirt. This is the exact reason we fall short of Manchester United. Does anyone believe United would have given away a victory the way we so gloriously did today?

  • Georgedb1

first of all, if that had been utd... Diaby would have gotten a medal of honor, Barton would have been banned from football. The penalties would have never been given nor the free kicks... and the game would have ended 0-5....

Dont give Manure any credit, Manure are shit and they are being held up aritificially by referees throughout england... they would give away a 4 point lead even quicker than we would if they were getting refereed the way we are. Thats why you although they may win the league they wont do anything in Europe unless they get an english referee...

  • Georgedb1

not to mention Nolan... can you imagine him going for van der saar like that? he would've gotten a public flogging

  • JG

I'm sorry, but we're only winning the Carling and maybe the FA cup this year. Now way we make up 7 points on United based on this.
Diaby and (more fucking importanly Phjil dowd) you ruined us.

  • Danish Gooner

12 against 10,it is gonna be difficult.

  • Homey_Mills

I'm gonna puke. This is the worst ever.

  • 1.) This ref should be suspended for his work today
2.) Newcastle have some of the grimey-ist looking fans I've ever seen. They look like backwoods inbred rednecks.
    3.) Wojo is hilarious

  • JG

It's pretty fucking obvious that referees hate us. My god, and Cesc gets tarnished in the media for some, on this occasion, perfectly legit comments. Fucking haters...

  • Joey Barton is lovely, isn't he? I've switched to a Liveblog. I can't bear watching the last bit. Ridiculous.

  • I'd like to kill myself.

  • JG

    oh, FUCK.

  • Homey_Mills

I can't believe what I'm seeing here. This is the worst ref ever. What a brutal non-PK he gave. We better get 3 points out of this. Wow.

  • Danish gooner

    WHAT AFUCKING COMEDY REF:

  • JG

On the other hand, Wojo has been an absolute BEAST today..

  • JG

If the first half was the Beautiful Arsenal, then this second half has been the Horse Ugly, Sarah Jessica Parker Arsenal.

  • JG

Non-penalty called, and oh shit we better not mess up this one....

  • Grabbing a good guy by the neck after getting the ball from the back of the net is all right. Grabbing a cunt by the neck after entering a tackle with one and half feet, on the other hand, is not. Gotta love British referees.

  • Homey_Mills

Second game in a row where the ref is brutal against us. I thought the PK was a dive, and I'm not sure how Nolan didn't get a yellow for tackling Wojo.

  • JG

Yep, just so happens that Barton is a good English boy, while Wojo (who incredulously got booked) is a dirty furigner.
    I think Cesc was right.

  • Wenger will be fuming for the rest of this match, post-match interview, and for a good while after for the fact that Nolan did not get a yellow. Absolutely mind boggling...

  • SJGgumby

Soft penalty, but probably defensible call. But how is Nolan still on the field? Just unbelievable how inconsistent (and seemingly biased) EPL refereeing has been.

  • JG

I missed it, is Djourou off due to an injury?

  • SJGgumby

Yes, though it looked precautionary - he was only slightly limping. Who knows though. I'd like to see Gibbs get some time in the midfield today, just in case we need him, though I'd think Songinho would be back for the game that Diaby is suspended for though (I assume it'll just be 1, not 3?).

And I think this ref forgot to bring his yellow card today. And he reminds me of Fat sam.

  • Holy crap! Who's going to play with Diaby suspended and Denilson and Songinho out injured. I'm beginning to feel sick..

  • JG

Songinho may very well be back for the next game.

  • FredJacob

    dejavu

  • Homey_Mills

On the one hand, it sounds good to take off the most dangerous scorers. But what about the other angle? We entered today 5 goals back of MU in goal difference. I don't think there will be an easier game all year for us to get some goals. With no game for another week, maybe we can think more about getting 6 or something, and go ahead on goal difference by the end of the day.

  • Aad966

the only one regret i had for this half when we had walcott almost one on one and instead of shooting he tried 2 square it for fabregas and the defender came in and took it... i mean walcott ur in such a good run, defenders arnd fab just go in and get a goal for ur own self make it 2 for u....

    but he is playing well...

  • Sairax

I have to say, we do talk a lot about bad tackling, but today, both teams have put in some very good tackles. Strong and hard, but fair.

  • Aad966

saw bartons challenge on diaby and arshavin?? or are u as selectively blind as the ref?

  • Sairax

Right. I said that in the first half. The second half had horrible challenges. But thank you for that very reasonable and level-headed comment.

  • SJGgumby

Other than that two-kneed barrel roll into Arshavin I assume...

  • Sairax

    Spoke to soon I guess!

  • JG

Allright Arsene. We're up 4-0, and Newcastle are just woeful at the moment. Please be a nice manager and take off RVP and Cesc at half-time or shortly thereafter before Joey Barton decapitates them in vengeful fury.

  • Sairax

I know Kos has been making some excellent clearances and interceptions, but he also has given the ball to the opposition a couple times.

  • Homey_Mills

And now 4-0. If we play like this, not only should Man Utd be scared, but we may have a lil sumpin sumpin for Barca too.

  • JoseJosue

    lol

  • JG

    I love this team.

  • I think every time I've missed the first 10 or 20 minutes of a game this year Arsenal have been up a goal when I started watching so I made the choice just to miss the first 10 minutes today. I wasn't expecting 3 goals up though.

  • FredJacob

KEEP missing the 10 from know on ok lol

  • JG

let's go ARSENAL!! 3-0, RVP just scoring them like butter!

  • Homey_Mills

This is what it's supposed to look like against Huddersfield and Leyton Orient, I think.

  • JG

Hey, I don't care which team we scored a blitz triple on, just that we do it!

  • JG

Spurs just scored a quick goal too, in their game against Bolton.
    Fuckin' Posers....

  • SJGgumby

Apparently they scored a quick second too, on another penalty, but the ref made them re-take the penalty and the second one was missed. That's the type of thing that can kill the momentum (at least I'm hoping).

  • Homey_Mills

They're so far behind us now, I don't even pay attention to their scores anymore.

  • SJGgumby

8 points is nice, but I'm not exactly comfortable with it, given the utter disaster that missing the CL would be.

But really, I just follow their scores on Martin's behalf.

  • Homey_Mills

Djourou!! What a header! Wow. We're gangsta today. Watch out Man Utd. Here we come.

  • FredJacob

another gOAL from a set piece, YEA

  • JG

AND NOW DJOUROU!! From an Arshavin FK, no less!! Come on Arsenal, let's go for the rout here!!

  • FredJacob

    yea baby

  • JG

WALCOTT!! oh my lord, that was quick!!!!

  • Homey_Mills

I hope nobody missed the first minute.

  • JG

    Come on Gunners!

  • SJGgumby

I feel like this is a real important game for Arshavin to hopefully keep the momentum building (or at least not have a relapse). I'm also curious to see if he might really be one of those players at this point that is better suited as a change the game sub. Pretty crazy that professional athletes can have stamina issues (when not coming back from an injury, etc).

Let's also hope we get through this without any more injuries - pretty uninspiring bench at this point in the season due to absences and form.

Still, love the look of that first XI, even without Nasri and Song - Let's go Gunners.

  • FredJacob

    Come on gunners

  • Sairax

    Come on Arsenal!!!!
