If you, like me, have been reading the Cypriot press lately-show of hands?-you may know of the under-the-radar controversy concerning Cypriot flags at the Emirates Stadium. Turns out some bloke had been flying a Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus flag at the football ground this season. The TRNC is recognised only by Turkey, whereas the rest of the world recognizes the entire island as the Republic of Cyprus. You can imagine some sore feelings have developed as a result. If not, maybe reader Prof. Denver can lay down some knowledge in the comments section.
So, several Cypriots complained to the club, and stated their plans to bring recognised Cypriot flags to Ashburton Grove. In response, Arsenal have banned all flags from the ground for the season. There is, of course, a tradition in England of incorporating one’s club name onto an the standard St. George’s cross English flag. I wonder how comprehensively-enforced the ban will be. Seems a bit much to me, although I can sympathize with the club’s aim of creating an inclusive atmosphere, especially with a club like Arsenal that enjoy such an international support base.
The real question is, will my SADR flag, which is tattooed on my imposing torso, be confiscated by the stewards?
