On the Other Hand, Maybe I’m an Idiot

By: Trent | July 11th, 2007

copa-america.jpgI stand by my take that the Copa America was underwhelming through the second round. But the next round and the semi-finals have been better.

Just now, I watched Argentina’s incredible goal, courtesy of Heinze, at the end of the second half against Mexico. If that that 1-0 lead holds, it will be Argentina versus Brazil in the final.

Which could be entertaining, no?

I guess it’s the normal tension between close matches all along, as against a tournament that at least ends in the best few teams playing one another for all the marbles. Cross your fingers!

Update: What a goal by Messi! 2-0 Argentina with 30 minutes left.

3-0 now, after Riquelme’s penalty stroke. This ‘un’ s over, no?

Final: Argentina 3-0 Mexico

The Uruguay-Brazil game was really good, this last one though, not so. I had no doubts that Argentina were going to win it. Though I would have liked Masche to have scored again.

The final should be entertaining, if Brazil shows up.

I still disagree - it’s been a great tournament with the exception of the quarter-finals, which was still exciting: watching the final four flex their muscles before the semi-finals. Furthermore, I’m a little disappointed it will be Argentina instead of Mexico. Brazil, despite occasional flashes of brilliance (Robinho’s hat-trick) and a fluke blowout in the Quarters, is still a new team that is searching to find it’s stride. Argentina, on the other hand, is a powerhouse - a collection of nationals that most top flight clubs would gladly swap rosters with, and then some. Mexico had a chance because of the momentum they’d gathered and their togetherness as a team, but Argentina slowly corroded all of that to pot and shut them out. I doubt that Brazil is up to this challenge, but if Mexico could have pulled off a miracle, than the Final would be a true thriller. Those are my thoughts, anyway.

    (p.s. thanks again for posting!)

Trent, I still think you’re wrong about this tournament. But you’re right about the Mexico-Arg match — incredible stuff.
