Pack Your Mittens
By: Trent | October 17th, 2006
It’s been unseasonably warm in London lately. It has, erm, not been unseasonably warm in Moscow. That matters, of course, since Arsenal is headed to the Russian capital to face CSKA Moscow in a Champions League qualifier today. Although in fairness, it could climb to a balmy 5° C for the match.
CSKA, who are atop the Russian top flight table, hope to give Arsenal an appropriately chilly reception. It may be recalled that the last time Wenger led his charges into Russia (2000), Arsenal were beaten 4-1 by Spartak Moscow. And A-Dub, like Napoleon, knows what can happen during the Russian winter:
While I feel we can beat them, you always have ingredients in Moscow during October that you cannot master. I have heard that the quality of their pitch has been destroyed by a tournament, and it is already cold there now.
Thus the mittens.
From CSKA manager Valeri Gazzaev’s perspective, Arsenal should have won last year’s Champions League final. Nevertheless, he believes they can take the three points. And frankly, with that Champions League-level mustache, is it a good idea to doubt this guy?

Game over. Too bad. But you have to admit, the CSKA goal was a gorgeous bit of fakery.
And is it just me, or does anybody else think Jens Lehmann looks less like a real keeper and more like how Hollywood would imagine a keeper should look? Whenever I see him play I keep expecting somebody to yell, “Cut!”
