Platini: Henry Should’ve Left Arsenal
By: Trent | November 5th, 2006
No, up yours. French legend Michel Platini, who is jockeying to become the next head of UEFA, has weighed in on Thierry Henry’s decision to spurn Barcelona for Arsenal over the summer. Platini thinks his fellow countryman’s growth is too stifled at a backwater club like Arsenal.
I sincerely believe he made a mistake in not signing for Barcelona. I told him so and said the same to Barca president Joan Laporta. Henry would have grown a lot at Barcelona. Thierry Henry is a truly great player and is on the verge of overtaking me as a goalscorer for France. However, he hasn’t achieved the same category of other great stars. Why? Because he lacks playing in a great team and winning titles with his club like he has done with France, where he has been European and world champion.
Hmm. Well, Barcelona did win the Champions League final in Paris last year, by defeating…Arsenal. Not sure if a 2-1 scoreline–against a 10-man Arsenal club–is a clear sign of superiority. And at any rate, it’s not a lock that Barca will even qualify for the final 16 in this year’s iteration of the Champions League. ‘Course…same could be said for the Gunners, but maybe we should actually applaud loyalty when it rears its infrequently-seen head.
