Poll: How Should We Spend the Money?
By: Martin | July 15th, 2009Well, Adebayor has apparently passed his physical and received his work permit, so all signs seem to point to Adebayor leaving Arsenal for Manchester City. I’m sure Travis and I will have more thoughts on this in the days to come once the move is confirmed, but for now, let’s jump straight over the reasoned, thoughtful retrospective of Adebayor’s brief time at the club and his rise and fall in the estimation of Gunner fans, and dig right in to the wild, uninformed speculation. In that vein, how we should spend the the £25 million we just got?
I know that Melo and Huntelaar are already in negotiations with other clubs, but there’s still technically a chance we could hijack those deals with our new money. So who should we get? I gave you the option of putting substantially all of the money towards an elite striker, putting substantially all of the money towards an elite holding midfielder, or putting the money towards a good striker and good holding midfielder. Or should we just hold on to the money and pay down the stadium debt a bit? Let me know what you think, and feel free to say in the comments section if you have any other ideas for spending the money.
What should we do with the money we just got for Adebayor?(opinion)
And, obviously, if for some reason this deal falls through at the last minute, then yes, I’m an idiot for putting up this poll prematurely. But then, if you read this site regularly, you already knew that.
UPDATE:And…of course, as soon as I put it up, comes official word that Juventus have agreed terms with Felipe Melo. So I suppose he’s out.

I know it’s not a targeted position of need, but what about getting Hleb back for half what we sold him for last year? I read today he’s unhappy. Maybe like Spurs getting Keane back.

I forgot to mention the most important implication of this deal. As we consistently out proven (yes, Adebayor is proven) players, we bring in the kind of players that are also sought after by teams like SPURS, SUNDERLAND, and FULHAM. I thought we were a top-four team, not a mid-table team.

We still made over 22 million on him; and I’d gamble he would have had another slump this season.
Bendtner is a non-option.
I agree with Alexinho, that this may be a terrible move (given Wenger’s sloth-like speed on clinching transfers). We now need a striker and a dm.
If this happened a week ago, we could have offered more for Melo or made a bid for Huntelaar. I hate to pull the “In Wenger we trust” but maybe he has some masterplan that may come out of left-field. Obafemi Martins? Edin Dzeko?
Or he just may pick up Chamakh and Matuidi and call it a day. If that’s the case, I think we will struggle again this season.

Does anyone wonder why we haven’t been seriously linked to buying Lorik Cana? I think he’d be a great player for the club but maybe I’m missing something…

Homey–I’m not a huge Hleb fan, but I’d be willing to take a chance on bringing back Flamini back–he and Cesc were dynamite in the midfield.
Omar–Cana has been linked to us, but it seems to have died down somewhat. From what I hear, I tend to agree that he’d a be decent addition.
And, finally, I guess I disagree with Alexinho in that I think Adebayor had alienated himself from the fans, the manager, and his teammate. He showed himself last season to be prone to laziness and sulking, and I can’t see why that would have changed this season. 25 million is a good price, and if we could flip that for a player like Huntelaar who is motivated to prove himself at the highest level, or players like Chamakh, Matuidi, or Cana who are looking to make the leap to an elite club, I think it’s a good piece of business and makes the club better. But we shall see what Wenger does with the money if the deal goes through…

Erm, I would either, A) Buy Eto’o b) Go after Gignac and Matuidi, playing Song more or Toure c) Buy Huntelaar and Matuidi D) Buy Cana AND Hitzlsperger or Veloso and Give Chamakh a chance on the bench E) Buy Chamakh, Hazard, Cana and Bassong.

Arsenalneed a striker, eduardo and van persoe will play together next season, and will play well together, I wouldn’t also mind vela playing a few games. Arsenal should attempt to buy obademi martins as his pace will be useful and would only set us back around 6 million. I would also reccomend buying hamit altintop, to strengthen the midfield, and maybe even a move for balotelli from inter?

I really feel like Huntelaar + a DMF is realistic and its what I would do. We NEED a targetman- Bendtner needs to be a backup. Say RVP gets hurt- who do you play up front? Hunter please. Dzeko Eto’o would be good options as well but I feel like the most realistic and smartest move is Huntelaar + a DMF. Come on Wenger

I’m tired of Wenger not spending money to solidify Arsenal’s status as an elite team and end the constant rebuilding process…however, this is an inflated transfer market and we will be overpaying for anyone we buy. I’m torn, but would err on hoping that Arsenal buy an established player in lieu of another ‘cog’ to put into the system (ie Chamakh/Matuidi).

Also, I think the best combo up front with our current players would be playing Arshavin up front as a second striker with RvP. That way Nasri, Walcott, and Fabregas can all play as attacking midfielders at the same time. Eduardo would be a great 2nd half impact guy along with Bendtner.

zadster :Van Persie as the main target man? Well, Arsenal won’t be going very far if that so. Van Persie is a link man. He won’t do it as the main striker. Eduardo should be the one. About Arshevin, how will you make him a second striker if he’ll be used as a winger. Frankly, I don’t understand Wenger’s plan now. If he plans to use Walcott as the new target man, I don’t think he’ll be ready. What will the like of Van Persie achieve when he’ll face Vidic\Ferdinand? The guy is a show-off player. However, when it gets serious, he’ll choke.
carl brockhill: This could be true if Eduardo manage to stay more than 2 games consecutively.
MoMONEY: Hunterlaar could be a good addition. However, the miserable season that he passed with Real might have affected his worth and, more, his quality. Hunterlaar need to be served like a baby if you want him to be productive. The guy doesn’t have a lot of dribbling ability.
If we assumed that Wenger is unlikely to add a striker, then we’ll have Persie and Eduardo playing the most important games. Bendtner will probably come on as a sub or play agaisnt lesser teams, Walcott (I don’t know where his future contribution will be), Carlos Vela and maybe Jay Simpson might have some lime light.Well, it looks as menacing as Manchester United. But, I’m still unconvinced.

I went to that website that Mark posted, and read a few of the blogs. One that stood out said that Bordeaux would want Silvestre in a deal if they sold Chamakh. Where can we sign up for that one? Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

chamukattack and inler. no doubt about it
good riddance to fishface

Why do arsenal even need silvestre? Sure he is a versitille defender, but he is old, anwe have far better in players such as toure, gallas, sagna, clichy, Gibbs and senderos. On that note, why is senderos not wanted by wenger!!! I don’t see why we sold flamini aswell, that was a big mistake as the DMF is a position needing strengthening, we can’t go about playing denilson every game, he isn’t good enough. Chamakh would be a great signing, and if Bordeaux want silvestre, I say, let him go. Huntenlaar will not go to arsenal as the fee is too grand for wenger’s wallett, I think that he should try and lure Daniel guiza away from fenerbache, he could be an exciting and interesting one to watch…

I think we should put efforts into signing Melo, I think he is exactly the type of player we need at the moment.

We should sign Chamakh and Mahamadou Diarra from Real. He’s experienced (28), used to winning trophies (4 french titles, 2 La ligas), would compliment Cesc well and as Real try to clear their squad out he would be available relatively cheaply (6 to 8m).

We need to do two things: Buy Hunter for around 17-20m and then bring in Viera on the cheap to bring composure, experience into the dressing-room and to teach our numerous young possible DMs how to play that role

Or maybe De Rossi(26yrs) until our youth can fill the gap
