R.I.P. Special 1 TV?
By: Martin | August 19th, 2009I think most of us probably suspected it when Setanta went out of business, but according to their Twitter page, Special 1 TV (a.k.a. I’m on Setanta Sports) (a.k.a. that little skit show with the Rooney and Mourinho puppets), have confirmed that they have not been approached by Sky, ESPN, or anyone else to continue making their weekly mini-show. If they don’t get picked up, they will presumably call it a day. The idea for the show was fairly stupid–a Jose Mourinho puppet, a Sven-Goran Eriksson puppet, and a Wayne Rooney puppet discuss the football news of the week. But the execution was oftentimes legitimately hilarious, and I, along with many others, made sure to catch it every week. The writing was funny and first-rate, and it’s a shame it didn’t get picked up by someone, as I can’t imagine the production costs were all that high.
Hopefully someone will realize what the world is missing and find a way to bring it back in some form. Until then, enjoy the best of clip package from last year, including the famous, gut-bustingly funny “Arshavin signing” bit with Mourinho and Wenger at about the 7:30 mark. Get me the tank.
